Bud and Vicki Hogan's 1996 Appalachian Trail Journey

June 1
Wine Spring Bald to Wesser Bald Shelter..................................................13.5 miles

We were doing our best to keep up with our 10 mile a day average. We didn't mind being ahead, but we couldn't afford to be late. After we get off of the hike, we have appointments in Tennessee, then Colorado, then Wyoming, and we can't afford to get behind schedule.

Every night after we set up camp, we got out our map and marked the date at the spot where we were camped. This was really the only journal we kept as we hiked.

Early Saturday we came across Wayah Bald, what a gorgeous view from the stone lookout tower. Carpet and chairs had been set up at the tower. As we walked on we remembered it was "June", and there was probably going to be a wedding today. This would be an incredible spot for a wedding.

Many hills later we camped at Wesser Bald Shelter. We set up our tent inside the shelter. Taz just used his sleeping bag as his tent was on the fritz-don't ask. Taz got on a roll talking about his escapades in the navy. All in all, a nice day.
