Bud and Vicki Hogan's 1996 Appalachian Trail Journey
June 27
Dennis Cove to Hampton...........................................................................................9 miles
Today we "lack packed" into town. We had been warned not to call it "slack packing". I don't know the difference between lack packing and slack packing, but a few people get a little upset if you confuse the two.
It felt funny not to be carrying a full pack. I did carry my empty pack to pick up groceries and a maildrop. This hike was one of the nicest, and most scenic of the entire trip. Down along a beautiful, rushing river, a spectacular water fall, and good trails. A little rocky and steep, but nice. Passed the shelter cut-off, up Pond Flats and down the other side.
We finally made it to the highway and was starting on the 3.6 mile walk off of the trail into town. We hadn't gone a mile, when a pick-up pulled over and offered us a lift. I wasn't big on hitch hiking but I wasn't going to refuse, either. Vicki rode up in the cab with our benifactor and I kept my pack company in the back. On our way to the P.O. we asked about restaurants. We were told of a Vietnamese buffet. Sounded great. We got our maildrop then headed for the restaurant. Good food, and "ayce"to boot.
After lunch, we called our shuttle service, he was there in about 15 minutes. Not a bad deal for $5 bucks. Back at the campground, we got cleaned up, relaxed and we enjoyed getting to know the owners. Quite a couple. They also offer a movie and popcorn to the hikers. Vicki and I hadn't seen a movie in so long that we were happy to take them up on the offer. We had a great night.
