Icewater Spring Shelter..........................................................................................0 miles
That's right, 0 miles. It was raining most of the day and cold all day. Anything we owned that could really keep us warm was wet. We talked about hanging around until the weather cleared up a little then going to the next shelter. But the weather was really bad and never cleared off. Neal checked with the ranger station and there was going to be plenty of room at the shelter tonight. That decided it. We were staying for another night.
Neal, "Big Smoky", was a tall Norse, older man, really friendly, courteous, and helpful. There were 3 high school boys from last night who entertained themselves by reading "Alice in Wonderland" to each other. Two more guys from New York came in and made their own little tent hut in the corner of the upper bunk. Pretty weird and loud and giggly.
We enjoyed watching the deer come up to the shelter in the evenings. The wind was blowing so hard, we tied our emergency blanket across the chain link fence to keep the wind and the rain from blowing in. I ventured out once or twice, but Vicki stayed inside all day. It felt strange not to be hiking.
