Bud and Vicki Hogan's 1996 Appalachian Trail Journey

Epilogue

The journey is never over.

When we returned home, we found a package. It was from Tom (W), he had sent us a bottle of the jerky marinade. These hikers are unbelievable. We had already received another postcard from Leo, thanking us again for the food, and an e-mail from Ray.

We also had an envelope from the Post Master in Suches, GA. It came with a note that said, "A hiker found these in the box you had thrown away." Enclosed was $40 in travelers cheques. Trail Magic.

During the weeks and months following our adventure, we would reflect on many things. We would write our journal, write letters and e-mail to the people who had been so great to us on the trail, and relive the experiences.

What did we accomplish? What did we learn? How did we feel about the journey?

One truth did appear, clearer than any other. One day in a town, a curiosity seeker had asked about our trip. We had walked several hundred miles, already, it had taken about 4 weeks. The stranger commented that you could have driven it in under one day. But one simple truth had already been revealed to me. "Yes, but it's the journey, not the destination."
