Where are we? Who's in charge The badge
The District is located one hour north of Dunedin and extends to the mountains, near Mount Cook, some 200kms northeast. The countryside has lots of places for tramping and camping and water activities.

The climate is dry with extremes between summer (33 degrees C) to winter (-20 degrees C). There are four major lakes in our District, created by hydro electric development. Also there is one ski field, Ohau (pronounced "Oh How") Ski field. It has been said that once you can ski there you can ski anywhere.

Unfortunately the district has no District personnel and will be merging with Oamaru Waiareka. This will mean the end of this District as it was known.

This page will be updated as more information is known.

Waitaki District badgeThis has a dark green background and lettering and shield in gold. In the top left hand panel in an oak leaf. The background to this is that every mile from Oamaru through to Lake Waitkai is an oak tree has been planted and so we have the oak leaf.

In the top right hand panel a trout represents the excellent fishing to be had in the lakes and rivers, whereas the merino sheep is for the farming and the excellent wool coming form them.

Since 30% of New Zealands electricty is produced here, the power pylon is on the badge. For more information about electricity click here.
