Hello all Parents, Scouts, Cubs and Friends

Well half the year has already flown by, and it’s once again time for another edition of the Kudu Horn.  The first half of the year has been very busy, as you will see by all the various reports.  Congratulations must go the following people - Gareth Whittal and Craig Wilson for passing part one of their Board Exams – they are now one huge step closer towards achieving their Chartered Accountant qualification.  Nicholas Berry for passing his final subject at Technikon.  Jared Prowse who was elected to represent EP in the u/14 Hockey Team.  Nicholas Damm (an ex-Cotswold Scout) who was chosen as the Captain of the Junior Springbok Roller Hockey Team.  Well done to them all.

Several events took place this term  - one being the BP Dinner.  Many thanks to those parents who donated puddings or money.   Your donations are greatly appreciated.  Many thanks also to those people “behind the scenes” who made this event so successful, once again.  Amongst others the events that took place were Kontiki and the Car Rally.  Thanks to Johan Prinsloo and Graham Gobey for organizing the Car Rally.

Our Scout Group is building a LAPA at the back of the hall and we require bricks for the back portion against the cliff face.  If you have any old unused bricks, even half bricks, we would be most grateful to have them.  If you are not able to deliver them, please phone Leslie Pike (Akela) on 3641498 to arrange to have them collected.

Recover, recycle, re-use Please keep sending your waste paper in the form of old newspapers, magazines, till slips, etc.  to the Scout Hall.   We also collect empty cool drink and beer cans for recycling purposes.   Parents are also kindly reminded that subs are due at the start of each new term.  To those who will be traveling during the holidays, please drive safely and see you all next term.
There might be a few people who are not aware of the fact the 1st Cotswold has it’s own web site.  Well over the last few months the Cotswold website has received three awards for design and content - this pushes the total number of awards received to four.  For those of you who have access to the Internet, go and have a look at the site and leave your comments or messages behind for others to see in the guest book. The URL for the site is www.oocities.org/1st_cotswold/. computer

BP DINNER  - (by Denise Charlton)

The BP Dinner was held on Saturday, 24 February 2001.  It was a great success,  It was well attended by various Scouting Associations.  Ernie Pike, Alan Wheeler and Madelein Roberts received awards for supporting their respective spouses in Scouting.  The food was delicious and many thanks to those who were involved in the preparation of the many dishes.  The pudding buffet was once again a great success.  I wonder who enjoyed the evening more, the guests or the helpers, with particular reference to Johan, Len and Trevor.

KONTIKI – PARENT’S RACE (by Johan Prinsloo)

After the Cubs had had their race, some of the adults used the Cub and Scout rafts for the Parent’s Race.  1st Cotswold fielded two teams, a ladies and a men’s team.  The rules of the race were – row to the opposite bank, once person to get off the raft, stand on the bank, and then row back again to the starting point.  Now this may sound simply and easy, but as things happen, complications set in.

When we set off, we were one crewman short, so we set a rather zigzag course across the river.  One of the other teams made use of paddle-ski paddles as opposed to the standard oars everyone else used.  However, everyone had great fun, and we hope the organiser’s will make the Parent’s Race a regular part of Kontiki in the future.

KONTIKI
2001 – MOTHER’S RACE (
By Gerda Fouche)

Kontiki 2001 was truly a memorable year!  Leslie Pike finally rose to the challenge – she joined the 4 mothers on the raft!

After our cubs coming 2nd in the 8-man race, the heavens poured!  Was this an ominous warning of things to come?  Amid all the confusion of instructions, the men raced away before we even had our paddles in hand!  So much for the moral support guys!  In a flurry of misplaced adrenaline, Leslie, Charmaine, Sharon, Denise and myself gracefully launched our raft. J  Maybe a strategy meeting beforehand would have been a good idea, as we had three people rowing on the one side, and two on the other!  I presume we looked rather like a fledgling, taking its first few waddles, than the graceful swan.   A few tactical corrections later, we reached the opposite bank of the river, where Leslie had  Kontiki
to run up the bank, wave, and charge back to the raft.

The turn at the opposite bank was a truly graceful maneuver, and in high spirits, we entertained the spectators with strains of  “Row, row, row your boat” on the way back to the slipway – then disaster struck!  We were attacked by two “goggodille”, in the form of Johan and Trevor, wanting to “rescue” us.  Johan rocked our raft – and we were drenched.  Successfully fighting off the “goggodille”, we still managed to win the race.  Our sincere thanks to all the wonderful supporters - pity there was no trophy for best team spirit!  It would have had a prime spot at 1st Cotswold.  Hopefully our example will inspire the mothers of the other cub packs to enter next year!

Troop Scouter's Report

Hello All

WOW this half of the year has flown by so quickly I cannot believe it is June already!!!!!   Well on the scouting scene not much has happened so far but I can say that the numbers in the Troop are slowing getting closer to my target of the minimum 14 scouts.   Thanks to Leslie for making sure that there is a regular flow of cubs going up to scouts. Next term she will be sending me a few more.

Scout
To run a successful scout troop on the patrol system you need to have at least two patrols of six scouts each to run on the patrol system. At this stage the Scouters run the troop and the patrol competition is not very strong.
Hiking We had a troop hike this term and went up and over the Lady Slipper. We slept at the Forester’s Hut on top of the mountain. The Fire Tower Guard gave us a short lesson on his duties up in the tower 60 meters up. It is so high up there that you can see Humansdorp / J-Bay.   The next morning we met up with another two troops in the Van Stadens Longmore Pine Forest. They were not scouts but baboons.  Later that day we saw a nice big bushbuck.
The troop meetings have been going well and I have asked Mrs. Dawn Muller to come and train the scouts on First Aid. She is qualified in First Aid and has a history with scouting having been a Pack Scouter herself. 1st aid

I would like to thank the Committee, Parents and fellow uniformed staff for assisting me over the past few months. It has been difficult due to me also changing jobs.

This up and coming Scout Week we will be contacting the scouts to assist in putting up a demonstration at Art in the Park.  The inter troop First Aid Competition is scheduled to take place at the end of July.  We are hoping to have a Troop beach hike planned for next term.

Many thanks

ANNUAL CAR RALLY
Fun bus Once again our car rally on 16 June was a success.  Our finishing point was the Quarryman Nature Reserve.  Some people got horribly lost but thank goodness for the cell phone.  Others did a lot of reversing and were wondering if they were supposed to do the whole rally in reverse gear!  Two other Groups who supported us were surprised at the lovely venue alongside the now dry riverbed.  Akela organized a few games for both the boys and their parents to play and the
noise was mind-blowing!  They all seemed to have a great time.  A number of new cub parents had not seen the reserve before and they were shown the bridge and bird hide that our Scouts had built some years back.  Thanks to La Farge for permission to use the Nature Reserve as our destination.  Many thanks to Johan Prinsloo and Graham Gobey for planning the route and the questions along the way.  They did and excellent job and good fun was had by all.

OUTING TO JAMES KLEINHANS POOL

A requirement before a boy may take part in the Kontiki Raft Race is the acquisition of a swimmers or aquanaut badge.  These tests were done at the pool in Westering.  The boys who gained swimmers badges were: - Roche Gouws, Colin Fouche, Lyall Blaauw, Robin Muniz, Darren Gelderbloem and Ross Holmes.
Water fun
Thanks to Alan Wheeler for his assistance in testing these boys.  The Aquanaut badges were gained by: - Brendon Zeelie, Nishaal Daya, Dylan Prinsloo, Kevin Brown, Jared Charlton and Godwin Prince.  Thanks to Johan Prinsloo for testing these boys and swimming with them in the 200 m length to encourage them.

NATIONAL WETLANDS DAY

We celebrated this day by having a fun wet program.  The Cubs also put together a few water saving tips for the National Water Week.  See attached drawings.

KONTIKI

Once again the Kontiki went off very well.  At last the fathers have got the design of the raft right because our 8 man raft gained a 2nd place and 3rd place overall.  Thanks to Skipper Johan Prinsloo for his guidance and encouragement and for transporting the raft to and from Redhouse.  A special thanks to Darryl Garner and the 3 dads who helped build the raft.

LEAPING WOLF BADGES

We are very proud to announce that Christopher Bell and Kevin Brown graduated to the Scout Troop after earning their Leaping Wolf Badges.  Well done boys!

NEW CHUMS

Two boys went to the Troop but we have invested two new chums – Ross Holmes and Darren Gelderbloem.  We welcome their families and hope they will enjoy being part of the 1st Cotswold family.
Cubs

E-MAIL MESSAGE

The Cubs sent an e-mail message of congratulations to the 3 hikers who hiked around the coastline from Kosi Bay to Alexander Bay.  You will remember that the Cubs walked with them on their send-off from PE a few months ago.  These 3 young men finished their epic journey on 5 June to coincide with World Environment Day.  We now await their full story on the 50/50 Nature Programme and we will endeavor to advise the Cubs of when it will be screened.  We also hope to tape the programme as well.  A photo of the Cubs was featured in the Wildlife Magazine “Eastcape Environmentalist” Volume 4 – Number 1/2001.  For those interested, their website address is www.wildlifesociety.org.za
