Dear All Well! We have now finished the first half of 1999 and we have had many activities during the second term. Many thanks to the Berry family for allowing the boys to hold their inter-patrol camp on their farm Ingleside. It was a lovely spot and the boys thoroughly enjoyed it there even though a few had to spend the whole of Saturday morning at rugby matches at Muir in Uitenhage. Speaking of the Berry family, their daughter Juliet (Kaa), is spending a year in America as an au-pair in Detroit. She has settled down very well there and has managed to get in a great deal of travelling around America. Her parents are hoping to join her there for a month later this year. (If you want to see what she has been up to, you can go & view her website at www.oocities.org/Hartland/Farm/7850/ ) Both patrols excelled themselves when they gave their moms a delicious meal for Mothers Day. The only sad part was though 12 mothers accepted their invitations, only 6 mothers attended. This dinner is special to the boys please make an effort to attend next year. How can we expect our boys to be committed when we as mothers are not!!! By all accounts, the father and son hike was well attended and enjoyed by all. Thanks to June October who provided us with a super car rally once again. We are sorry to learn that the family have been transferred to Kenya and wish them everything of the best there. Any takers for organising the car rally next year??!! Thanks to all those who obtained prizes for those taking part. First Prize Whittal Family car radio |
Hello Everyone. Since my last report the troop has
not been involved in too many activities but they have
been significant ones. We have two new patrol leaders
Jean Wileman (Rhino) and Patrick Wilson (Kudu)
with their more than able assistants Grant
Ahlschlager (Kudu) and Jaco Gerber (Rhino).
Interpatrol Cooking Competition This was once again held in conjunction with Mothers Day. The patrols went to a lot of trouble to prepare a three course meal and decorated the tables. It was only disappointing as to the number of mothers that came. In the end our gate crashing Pack Scouter was invited to stay as she is still part of the Cotswold family. The food was good and the competition was close. The mothers got so involved we had to eventually ask them to leave.
Car Rally On 16 June a large group of people gathered at the hall, this was not for the inauguration of the new president nor was it for the Comrades Marathon but for a well organised car rally by June October. There were great prizes to be won, obviously word had gotten out. A great day was had by all and congratulations go to all the winners. We still have a few up and coming events such as the Father and Son Hike, Mc Clelland Trophy, Walton and Jota. On a disappointing note, PLTU has had to be cancelled due to a lack of participants. They are hoping to have the course in January next year. Yours in Scouting Steven OReilly |
ST. GEORGES
DAY CHURCH SERVICE Sunday 25 April, 5
Cubs attended this Church Service. St George is the
Patron Saint of Scouts. The sermon was led by Mrs.
Packwood who used a dog, a bicycle and a long sword as
part of the theme. She is to be commended for the way in
which she got the message across. CUB SOCCER CHALLENGE After the Church Service, the 2 teams of Cubs met at the Victoria Park Grey School for this annual event. Although we did not win any trophies, a fantastic time was had by all. Thanks to team manager Andy Daniels, and the team coach, Norman Brown for their help and support. Thanks also to the 1st Newton Park Group for the well organised event. MOTHERS DAY TEA PARTY What a wonderful turnout of moms. Your sons really appreciated your support. The mothers are never quite sure what to expect but the boys were in fits of laughter. The mothers were pleasantly surprised with their delicious flapjacks, all cooked with great love and care by their sons, which was accompanied by tea and coffee. A gift made by the boys, comprising a flower, made from seeds and pips, mounted in a reed frame was presented to each mom. It is with much sadness that we say "goodbye" to the October family who have been transferred to Kenya. We will miss you, Timothy and hope that you will be able to continue your cubbing in Kenya.
SCOUT MOTHER'S DAY DINNER Gatecrashing is always a challenge. Going to the Scout Dinner for their mothers was definitely worth the effort. After sneaking in I was welcomed with open arms as quite a few mothers were unable to attend. The boys put in a big effort and the meal was superb. The seafood cocktail was especially tasty. I can recommend the boys cooking any time. I will definitely try the same stunt next year. THANK YOU, RHINO PATROL. From Akela the gate crasher. |
