Dear Parents, Boys and Friends

Due to unforeseen circumstances we were not able to circulate our newsletter last term, so we will just have a short synopsis of this terms news.

SCOUT NEWS

It was decided that seeing that the boys had, had a tough year and with exams coming up that the fourth term would be more relaxed. The boys however, have not been idle and took part in JOTA. Both patrols took part, although disappointing from the organisation side; the boys made the most of it. The boys also took part in Skilkana, which took place at Elands River, just outside Uitenhage. Two patrols again took part, but it was disappointing to note the lack of support from our boys. Congratulations to 1st Cotswold who came first and fifth. The prizes were tremendous and an incentive for those who didn’t go.

From 27 November to 4 December, the boys will be constructing a lapa at the back of the hall. Those of you, who are interested in helping, come along and don’t forget your braai meat.

It has also come to my attention that the boys are not wearing uniform to Scouts. If a scout is sick, he should wear a tracksuit over his uniform. If your uniform is too small, you can buy one from the Scout Shop or BKB in Grahamstown Road, North End. You can also speak to me about a second-hand uniform. If yours is too small, we can try and sell it for you. Uniform is an essential part of scouting, so please make a point of wearing it. It is a good idea to bring a rugby jersey or something to wear after inspection, when working on projects to keep their uniform clean.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all.

Yours in Scouting

Steven O’Reilly

CUB NEWS

The Cubs have had a busy term –

  • Jared Prowse has gone up to Scouts.
  • We took part in Skilkana on 31 October and went by train, which was great fun. Skilkana was great and the venue was superb. We had two teams of 4 boys taking part and they won a few events. Thanks to Uitenhage SOE for a very enjoyable event. Also thanks to Charmaine
  • Zeelie who came on the train with me.
    • Marine Day – we ran a Marine Day program with fishy games and handcraft making sea monster masks as part of our Mask Badge which we completed last Friday.
    • Mini Cricket Challenge – We had a team of 5 boys who were all young but thoroughly enjoyed the day. Thanks to 2nd Kabega for arranging it.
    • We will be ending the year with a Christmas picnic at the Quarryman Nature reserve, weather permitting.
    • We will be attending the Christingle Christmas Carol Service at Hobie Beach on 2 December 1998. A collection will be made for the street children.

    CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

    LAND APPEAL

For those of you who may be wondering about this matter, it is still ongoing although we have had more pressing problems this year. The money already donated has been placed in a separate account and we hope to add to it next year.

It has been decided to discontinue Friday Scout Suppers next year as only a few boys are supporting it. We can reconsider this to raise extra money nearer the next jamboree.

In conclusion, a big thank you to our uniform staff, their assistants and all committee members who helped keep the group functioning. We also had a number of parents who willingly assisted with fundraising and repair work around the hall this year – thank you for all your help.

May everyone have a blessed Christmas and a wonderful holiday season. We look forward to having you all back again in January 1999.

    Yours in Scouting

    Gaynor Berry
