Dear Scouts, Parents and Friends

We have had an eventful second term. Some of the highlights are - the Cubs going to Tsolwana Game Reserve - an event they thoroughly enjoyed. Thanks very much to Sean Pike, an ex-scout of our troop, who arranged it all. Our Scouts are looking forward to their outing at the Reserve during the first weekend of the holidays. Another event was the Cub Mother's Day Tea and the Scouts evening dinner - it was really a great event. The only pity was that so few moms attended. Please remember to keep the Mother's Day Friday open for next year.

Many thanks to Madelein Roberts for the wonderful dance she organised to raise much needed funds for our group. Well done Madelein, thank you for all your hard work. An amount of R700-00 was raised.

SCOUTER'S REPORT

Well, it s that time again, we ve had a busy second term with lots of area and troop events to keep us out of trouble.

On 18 April 1998 a rather large group of Scouts congregated at the Translux Parking at Greenacres, after reassuring the Police that we were Scouts and relatively harmless, we boarded the bus which would take us to Shamwari Game Park. The mood was festive with lots of chatter and laughter and the singing of Cotswold Jou Lekker Ding. The boys took on the task of the night hike. In perfect weather, with a full moon, what more could we ask for! Cotswold completed the hike with ease but were unlucky to obtain a place amongst the top three, although the valuable experience gained will help them next year. On the 19th the boys boarded the bus after a couple hours of sleep. This time the bus was relatively quiet with most people opting to sleep on the way home.

The Interpatrol Cooking Competition was held on 8 May 1998 at the Scout Hall. This was again held in conjunction with the Mother s Day celebration. This, as usual, was of a high standard and the only disappointment was that only two patrols took part in the competition. The mother's had a wonderful time and commented on how good the food was. Keep up the high standard Boys!!!!

The next event was the Interpatrol First Aid Competition which was held at the Cotswold Scout Hall. This involved a number of bases, from mouth to mouth, burns, broken bones, clearance of a smoke filled room and numerous others. The competition went well but I think most of the boys found out just how little they really know about first aid. The Haig First Aid Competition (area) took place at the Walmer Scout Hall on 17 May 1998. This event was not that well organised with base leaders being drawn in at the last minute. Cotswold had a patrol of younger scouts who did well considering the competition they were up against. This did not effect their determination to win and they eventually managed a third place. Congratulations keep up the fighting spirit!!!!

The next event was the Toughees Challenge which was a combined event between Cubs and Scouts. The Scouts were asked to build a tower and the Cubs filled the inside with tins of food collected for the charity of their choice. On the Friday night before the Toughees Challenge, the Scouts built a highly visible tower which took about two hours to complete. Thanks to everyone who helped build and demolish this tower. Congratulations must go to the Cubs for all their hard work in collecting all those tins. Well done Boys!!!

The next event was a Car Rally which was held on 16 June 1998. A big thanks to the organiser, June October and all those who attended. The rally took us through the streets of Cotswold, Newton Park, Mangold Park, Walmer and ended at Dodds Farm. This was done by following clues on a sheet given to you and questions had to be answered. Time and mileage was taken at the beginning and end and the one with the quickest time and shortest mileage and the most correct answers was the winner. The cherry on top was Nicholas Berry's rendition of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star !!!

Reminders of events that are coming up:

  • On 26 to 28 June we have the unique opportunity to go camping in the Tsolwana Game Park where there will be a multitude of exciting events taking place.
  • Please note the Mc Clelland Camping Competition between 16-07-98 and 18-07-98. This is the biggest area event of the year. It gives the boys a chance to put their camping skills to the test against some of the best troops in the area. If the boys make an effort to attend, I m sure we have a good chance of bringing back this coveted trophy.
  • The Interpatrol Pioneering will take place from 25-07-97 to 26-07-98 due to exams.
  • Our AGM takes place on 28 August 1998 - hope to see you there!

MOTHERS DAY TEA PARTY

Mothers always feel more than special when a day like "Mothers Day" is celebrated on a day that is not meant to be "Mothers Day". That is why 1st Cotswold's Cub group spoilt us (their mothers) with a Mothers Day tea party on the 22nd May at 17:00.

The afternoon started with a few ice-breaking games - "breaking" being the operative word, as the race was won by the team whose members burst their balloons first by sitting in them! Great fun, much noiseand real good start to the afternoon. I think that this game may become a regular pasttime at most Mothers Day tea parties! This was followed by a game of speed and accuracy. The cubsversus the Moms. Needless to say we won with hands down. Keep it up Moms. May we go down in history as always holding on to this victory.

Tea is always both a treat and a unpreditable adventure when she is served tea and cordon-bleu cinnamon pancakes made by your own son. I must say - they were delicious! One was not enough, so the plates of pancakes that followed were graciously welcomed by all!

It was an afternoon enjoyed by all.

Thank you and God bless Akela and the Cubs!

Much Love

CUB CAMP AT TSOLWANA GAME RESERVE (Report by Juliet Berry)

On Friday, the 15th of May, five exhausted cubs, Ernie Pike, Akela and myself, arrived at Tsolwana Game Reserve, which is situated near Tarkastad.

After a 4 hour trip, we were greeted by the Ranger, Sean Pike (Akela's son), who took us to our pimitive, but cosy accomadation for the weekend. After supper we were lucky enough to go on a freezing col night drive where we spotted Letchwe, an antbear, a porcupine and some cubs even got to chase scrubhare. We then returned for milo, a story and then bed.

Saturday morning started with a walk to the dam, followed by breakfast and a quick drive to chase "Eddie" the Rhino through the bush. The Ranger then took us on an informative walk to collect various grasses as well as dung. After tea, the boys were taken into the bush and dropped off at variuos intervals to observe nature. The Ranger kept an eye on all the boys as well as Akela, who was so overwhelmed by the silence that she fell asleep. Lunch was then enjoyed by all, even the horses. This was followed by an afternoon game drive where we spotted eland, ostrich, various buck, a dead rhino and even got to chase wildebeest. Back at the house, we built a fire to start defrosting our numb fingers and noses, while we waited for supper. The boys wrote thank you letters to Charles, the warden of the park, then had a story and were fast a sleep by 9pm.

The boys began the frosty Sunday morning with a brisk walk to the dam, followed by breakfast and a Cubs Own. After some conservation work in the reserve, the boys saw some albino springbok and were taken on a tour of the taxidermy workshop. Charles, the warden was thanked, followed by lunch and the trip home.

We all arrived home safely on Sunday, and for this I would like to thank Ernie Pike for the transport. Charles, the warden, must be thanked for allowing us the wonderful opportunity of staying at his reserve. And last, but certainly not least, thanks must go to Sean Pike for allowing us to stay at his primative home and for giving up his time to teach us everything we ever wanted to know about nature.
