Here is a basic maintenance schedule for your beloved bicycle, this is only a
guideline, and will vary depending on your commitment to the sport and to your bike.
I really oughta put more time into this section, so email any hints or tips you have,
and we'll all feel better (?)
Every Ride:
=Wiggle headset to check for loose or tight bearings
=Inspect tires for correct pressure, cuts, and wear
=Make sure brakes are working properly
Every Week:
=Check brake pads for wear
=Lube the chain
=Inspect cables for kinks, rust, lube
=Check derailleurs and brakes for dirt and lube if needed
=Wash the beast
Every Month:
=Keep seatpost from seizing up in frame
=Check bottom bracket condition
=Inspect handlebar for looseness or damage
=Make sure saddle is tightly bolted to post
=Check rims for dents, cracks, and trueness
=Check chain for stretch, or damaged plates
=Eyeball chainrings and sprockets for bent or worn teeth
=Inspect aluminum frames for cracks, dings, dents
=Check forks for oil leaks, symptom of blown cartridge seals
Biannually:(twice a year, retard)
=Check headset cups, cones, and bearings for wear and lube them
=Check bottom bracket for same, unless its a cartridge unit
=Check hub's guts for wear
=Check pedal guts too
=Keep stem from seizing up (if quill type)
=Inspect elastomer forks for cracked or deformed bumpers
=Change oil in forks or grease elastomer forks
=Make sure quick releases are not worn or stretched and grease them
=Check hubs and spokes for cracks, cuts, bends and spoke tension
Annually:
=Inspect Chromoly frames for rust, dings, cracks
=Consider replacing cables and housings
=Check derailleurs and brakes for loose or sloppy action
=Overhaul all bearings, cups and cones
=Grease rear freehub body
