Winter/Spring Mountaineering 98/99

Our only winter climb of 1998 was over Christmas break. James, Duane, and Chris climbed Scott's Hill from near Guardsman Pass, on snowshoes. The summit was extremely windy, and nearly blew them off, but it was still a fun hike. They had to descend fast because the wind changed and began blowing snow onto the slope they were on, making it more avalanche-prone. Too bad we forgot a camera.

The 1999 mountaineering began in January with a snowshoe attempt on Silver Peak, from Desolation Lake. James, Keith, Dan, and Matt got ahead of the adults, and nearly got to the summit, but the wind began loading snow onto the slope that they were on, and they were forced to turn around. Meanwhile, Don S, Greg F, Kevin, and Jon went a different way, and never even made it to Desolation Lake. Unfortunately, nobody brought a camera, so we don't have any pictures.

Jon, James, Keith, and Chris have also done some ice climbing in January and February. These pictures are from Scruffy.

What winter would be complete without skiing? Here are some ski pictures.

Over Spring Break, James, Keith, and Dan hiked up Coalpit Gulch to go ice climbing. James had climbed up there, solo, on Monday, and done some great ice climbing. The three of them went up on Friday, after a big snowstorm. Near the bottom of the Gulch, there was a really hard and steep snow section, which was covered in powder. Keith had trouble climbing it, so James lead up it. After reaching the bottom of the ice, the guys found out that all of the ice had melted, to where if you hit it with ice axes, it would just break off. They were all quite angry, since it had taken close to an hour to get up there, because of the powder.

In early April, Keith, James, Matt, Dan, Duane, Richard, Andrew, and Corey, along with others went to Estes Park, Colorado for a church event. They hoped to go hiking, but only James and Matt went. They went up one of the mountains that surrounds the place. It was windy and very cold, but they had fun.

James and Matt climbed Mount Baldy and Sugarloaf in April. They then skied off of the summit of Sugarloaf, and through Alta Ski Resort. Since it was about 5:30 when they skied down, there were no people at the top of the resort. They were both surprised when they found people skiing at the bottom of the resort. It was the last day of the season for Alta, so there was a party going on.

Jon and James tried to climb at Pentapitch in April, but were turned back by wet rock and snow making it possible to climb the first 15 feet on snow. They make their way through the snow back to the car, and headed to Lisa Falls on the north side of the canyon, instead. The approach to Lisa Falls was much nicer for james in his jeans, and Jon in his tennis shoes. They climbed 2 pitches, rapped off, and headed home.

James, Keith, and Duane climbed Preston Peak and Clayton Peak late in April. It was a stormy day, and it snowed on the guys. It was quite fun descending through Brighton Ski Resort on new snow, since the resort closed a week earlier. James and Keith both wished they brought their skis, to make fresh tracks in the powder. Duane doesn't ski, so he was happy riding down, sitting on his avalanche shovel.

The next day, James, Jon, and Chris went rock climbing at Storm Mountain Island. Chris is the only one who got to climb, because it startes raining. After getting both James' and Chris' ropes stuck, they retrieved them, and went home.

James and Duane attempted Silver Peak again. They thought they had made it, but when James and Keith climbed it in June, without snow, James realized he and Duane had climbed the wrong peak in April. It was a fun hike anyway. James and Duane actually climbed some hill (approx. 9600), which he and Duane thought was Silver Peak.

On May 8, James hiked solo partway up White Pine Canyon. He stopped partway up, because he was alone, and getting into deep snow, which would be dangerous for avalanches, since he was alone. Later that day, he went up Neffs Canyon with a school friend, Brandon, his dog, Smokey, and Brandon's dog, Max.

On May 16 James, Chris, Don S, Matt, Dan, Kevin, and Dustin climbed Mount Olympus. It was a fun hike, with great weather and conditions (first time this year). Everybody except Kevin made it to the summit. He stopped to talk to a cool guy, who was training for Rainier.

On May 22, James, Duane, Dan, and Greg F hiked part way up Ibapah Peak, which is in the Deep Creek Mountains. They were camped near Topaz Mountain, and drove out to the Deep Creeks in the morning. It was anexciting 4WD, followed by a cool hike in an oasis. The Deep Creek Mountains resemble Little Cottonwood Canyon, even rising out of the desert, and becoming an oasis. The snow near the top of the pass was really bad, and we kept falling through. Nobody made it to the summit, but we had a great hike in some place we had never been.
