Richard T. Crotty was elected Orange County Property Appraiser in November 1992 following 14 years of distinguished
service in the Florida Legislature.
He was raised in Orlando, attending Orange County public schools and graduating from Valencia
Community College (1970) and the University of Central Florida (1972) with a degree in Public
Administration and Communication. Upon graduation, he served one year in the Florida Legislative Staff
Internship Program while working in the Senate Minority Leader's Office and attending graduate school at
Florida State University. Mr. Crotty is a recent graduate of John F. Kennedy School of Government,
Program for Senior Executives in State & Local Government at Harvard University. Mr. Crotty has
earned the designation as a Certified Florida Appraiser from the State of Florida, and is a licensed real
estate broker.
Prior to seeking public office, Mr. Crotty worked in the fields of management consulting and sales and became involved in
numerous civic, charitable and political organizations.
He was first elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 1978, and was reelected to his seat in five subsequent
elections -- the final two without attracting opposition.
During his tenure in the House, he rose to become the ranking Republican member of the Higher Education Committee and
the Appropriations General Government Subcommittee.
Among his legislative accomplishments stands the creation of the Prepaid College Tuition program. In 1990, Mr. Crotty was
elected to the Florida Senate where he was named Republican Floor Leader. Throughout his legislative tenure, Mr. Crotty
was the recipient of numerous honors and awards.
A desire to spend more time near his family and to continue public service led to his decision to seek the office of Orange
County Property Appraiser.
One of his major goals when taking office was to enhance public awareness of the assessment process and the variety of
information available through the Appraiser's office. Mr. Crotty has also continued the emphasis on information technology
in the office. The Orange County Property Appraiser's office recently won two national awards when the International
Association of Assessing Officers presented Mr. Crotty with the 1995 Distinguished Assessment Jurisdiction Awards and the
1995 Public Information Award

The TDI engine is an Direct Injection Diesel Engine. Previous generations of diesel engines by VW and other
manufactures for cars were of the indirect injection method. This involved having part of the explosion happen in the
prechamber to help get rid of the noise. Trucks and most other diesel engines have direct injection which gave more
power as more of the fuel was burned and produced usable energy. The TDI diesel engine uses the direct injection
method instead of indirect injection. To offset the noise of the diesel a special swirl chamber is used to inject the fuel.
Sound dampening is also used to make it quieter. Through the use of this swirl chamber a the chip that has many
different preset modes of injecting the diesel the other common characteristics with diesel (smelly exhaust, loudness,
and lack of power) are overcome. Fuel efficiency is also increased, and in Canada diesel is cheaper than gasoline:),
