Nice to hear that you've been settling in nicely, Chunda. Whenever anybody studying overseas tell me what they eat/cook I shudder. Imagine doing that for years on end. (Ok, you don't have to imagine...) Bet you miss the ol' SFI food huh? I miss my outdoor stuff too, Uni is just so sedentary. Really glad I'll be going to NZ to enjoy some scenery and company and outdoor stuff.

Hello people... it's been quite a while since I wrote back to anyone in ODAC but rest assured that I was not procrastinating. First of all, my new email address is stated above. If there are problems accessing this account, you can also get to me at tanch on@sas.upenn.edu. (Dont ask me how I got this terrible addy name... the schools used a "complex algorithm" to assign these... sheesh) Yah, keep me flooded with what's happening back there in Singapore okay? Thanks! Ok, on my side, school has been extremel busy... (ermmm if anyone told you that americans are 1) stupid 2) lazy, then you can be sure that he is lying through his teeth) Things are quite competitive especially in the business school but hopefully I can get some respectable grades for this semes er *glup*. My dorm room is quite big, my indian roommate from india is somewhat immature (16+) but really a nice guy at heart. But my biggest complaint here is: the food suxs!!! (how did Jason and Siwei ever survive?) i'm basically consuming my meals from the food trucks because they provide the closest semblence (if any) to the wonderfully delicious food tht I realize I had been getting back home. Well, the one redeeming factor is that there's a restaruant called "Penang" at the Philly chinatown which sel s some familiar malaysian/singaporean cuisine, so when I get really homesick I have something to fall back on.=) Nothing really significantly interesting has happened since school started except perhaps the paintball trip I had last saturday (paintball, b w, is a wargame using ammo consisting of paint). It was really fun running loose in the forests and doing some fire and movement! I never thought it could be so enjoyable especially having just finished conscription but this was good... at least I picked he enemy flag twice so I'm quite satisfied with the results. Well, on another note, I may be joining the outdoors club over here really soon so as to keep my odac instincts alive. In particular, I am looking at maybe some indoor rockclimbing gym at centra city. That's about it for now... oh I should be visiting cornell for fall break next month so jason/siwei look out for my emails! Tht's all guys... take care. I miss you all!

no lah, wen, the most you have to do is appear on crimewatch, hahaha. don't think they make scholars do this kind of "neighbourhood work" right? anyway, "xinyan's bad neighbour episode 3":
they made an official complaint to hdb, uh-huh. my landlord made a surprise visit on me last night, checking to see if we really did all those nonsense that they claimed. guess what they told hdb? they complained that we put tables and chairs outside the orridor, blocking it entirely, that there are 9 people living in the flat, illegally of course, and that we hold lots of late night parties and are very noisy and generally make a nuisance of ourselves. i was so angry i tell you! i'm really glad i'm movin out. weikai i tell you, if i stay another month i'll be the one chopping them up with an axe! i mean, i don't mind if they complain to hdb about the truth, that they're not happy that we leave the gate open, and we put the stool outside. if hdb tells me cannot do that, fine. now they're just admitting that these things do not hold enough weight to make a complaint and so they have to make things up. they're not only rude, they're despicable as well. singaporeans are so boorish i can't stand it. isn't th re anything i can do about this unjust? somebody teach me!!.....

ok, it's bitching time. remember the bad neighbour i have? well she's not bad, she's horrible! we had a huge fight with her yesterday, oh, actually, 2 huge fights, because she's been slamming our gate door everytime she walked past our apartment.
at f rst we thought it was this little kid who had nothing better to do, turned out it was her. she's really an ah soh! we confronted her none too politely and many angry, loud words later, we found out that she was not happy that we left the metal gate open, and her precious grandchild ran into it. what the hell is wrong with her, all she had to do was tell us and we would have closed the gate in the future right? but noooo, she has to slam gates! and she has the cheek to tell me tt because i'm just a tenant f the flat, i have no right to speak to her! anyway, she threatened to go to some hdb authorities to complain about us obstructing the corridor by leaving the gate open.
hours later, she rang the doorbell, and brought along her son and daughter-in-law to quarrel. Her son, not knowing the full story (when i told him how his mother liked slamming gates, he looked surprised and she looked embarassed) still decided to quarrel with us. When I ended the quarrel with a "You're as rude as your mother!", he had the cheek to say "yeah!" truly a son of a bitch! never yuan wang the mother this time.
again i say, why me? why must i meet this kind of people all the time? why??.......

I don't really like GTO. mebbe i'll go and buy "beach boys". why are the VCDs so heap huh? pirated ones issit? they sell so openly? some parts of the show like missing like tt, and also can catch parts of adverts, like recorded from the tv like tt. where to get originals? i think the japanese songs are very nice also. hehe, i feel lik i've just been let on in the secret tt many people have already known for a long time. argh, i'm really afflicted with jap madness now. i shan't start on their mangas though.

Huaquan and the big-eyed girl? Nonsense, man, I can vouch for him. It's totally untrue. Sometimes facts are juicier than fiction. I must admit Mr Tan is acting pretty weird over this ol' Lynn person though, cycling in the middle of the night to send her h me. (that's to somewhere in the East, from NTU, on a schoolday) On the other hand Mr Tan has never been known for sane behaviour, unlike Miss Jude here, so maybe and maybe not. The plot thickens...

(Mayb I'll just burst into tears when the plane takes off?) I want to express my thanks to those who have been helpful to me all these two and half years especially when things have not been progressing well. People have changed, but I hope that each and every one of us will still look upon our batch with pride and draw strength from the common experiences that we once shared as we face the future. Remember that in odac, it's "all for one and one for all". Friends forever!

Enjoy my work too, though the process gives me heck of a lot of frustration, when I can finally write down the next line proper, I whoop with Joy. Same for my tuition. Just feels good teaching kids who are supposed to already know the things you are teaching but don't coz the teacher in school screwed up, or the student screwed up originally and now needs a second chan e. I wish Lee Lee Fong had the heart(?!??!) to give me a second chance in Econs back then in JC. Well, the only thing I have left to bitch about is ODAC, but if everything pulls off smoothly, I think I'll feel good at the end. Then its time to reward myse f with a barrel of Haagen Daaz ice cream bought with my tuition pay cheques.

Today at my volunteer thing at the Boy's Hostel I was talking to this other volunteer who's always very cheerful and nice. Well, he mentioned t at after this (ended at 10p.m) he was going to WORK. Apparently in the holidays he worked a full-time job in the day and as a security guard at night in order to pay the 20% of his school fees that are not covered by his student loan. He still finds the e ergy to volunteer too. Ah well, what can I say. Although it didn't change the fact that I'm still feeling disgruntled, tired and sian.

Ah, yes, Joshua has it right. If a car knocks you down and leave you paralysed, well, shit, it's outta my control. But then you still have the choice of dying (giving up) or hanging onto life with maybe one functioning eyelid. Choices and control are such different things. Why, if we had control, then we wouldn't be where we are, would we?

Wenyi said that a large chunk of life is outside our control.(I think) The part that is within our control is where the choices and priorities come in. So, on behalf of Wen, nope, no change in stand. Oh, did the friend have big eyes? If she did, I know wh ch of them was using his buayaing skills. As for pushy neighbours, my parents are mildly like that, they asked my neighbour to take in this laundry thing that was in the corridor. Of course my neighbours've just about taken over the corridor with kid's bi ylcles, piles of shoes and a table, so that hardly made a dent. Ironic that bad neighbours were just highlighted in the Sraits Times today.

i agree with wen, tt life is all about making choices, so it's weird to lament, but lamenting to frens who understand is like sort of bonding. wen, i tot at desaru i was arguing tt life is all about control and choices and you were the one who said life i generally out of our control? changed ur stand now? :Þ
anyway, i lament :(.....i lament about my new neighbour in the newly rented flat. she's so picky! carol parked her bike near a staircase and she asked her to remove it, coz the staircase is "her place" and her children will trip over the bike, and she als asked me to remove a stool tt i put outside my flat (to conveniently wear my shoes), reason being tt her kids will take the stool and fall off the building from standing on it. argh, anyway i was a total pushover and just did everything she asked. when i told my dad about her, he agreed about the stool thing. sigh...well i guess old pp are wiser. i wonder though why i must have more than my fair share of irritating people. just the other day there was this *beep* malay NS boy, who......and just a few days ago there were these *beep* *beep* malay civil defense boys, who...... sigh, wat's wrong with all these malay pp?!!
by the way, if anyone wants to visit me at the flat it's jurong west st 61, blk 649B, #15-300, coz i met HY and HQ and they asked me to put the add up here. i'm prob going to be in all the time. oh and guess WHAT i saw with them? hehehe, let's just say ei her HY or HQ has oredi put his buayaing skills to good use! hehehehe <= i'm just trying to be funny here, i'm SURE she's just a fren.....

You know, I don't believe life ever passes one by, but rather, one passes life by. If that makes any sense. It's all a matter of choice and priorities. When are we ever helpless to decide? Some can always make time for old friends, some let fatigue and ot er activities (hall, school, church, family, BGR) take precedence. Well, that's perfectly all right too, if it's a conscious choice. Old friends will become part of an old life. What is more natural than that? But if it's not a conscious choice, then mayb some big-time reflection is in order. After all, you're passing life by, right now.

I sense a slight contradiction here... if you're a spendthrift, then you don't NEED the money... but nevermind...
Oh well... anyway... summer's over. I think this summer went by really fast. Even though I was back for something like 11 weeks in total, ('bout 3 weeks more than last year), still feel that the summer simply flew by. Didn't get to do half the things taht I wanted to do, see all the people taht I wanted to see. Oh yah.. Alvin, if you're reading this, do you realise that I haven't seen you for two whole years? And if I don't see you till next summer, that'll make it three years... *sigh*.... Will you be aro nd in UK over the winter break? I might be going over....
Well... but still.. it was good that I managed to see quite alot of you... at least once... pity that Op Nos was so small, though... Really wish that more people could have come. Like the silly Alan Ong -- don't want to come also "diam diam" never tell an one until we called you. Grrrr.... =P.

Which is like rafting except you're actually in (and under) the water. It's quite an extreme experience; really exhilirating, but scary when it flips and i'm upside down underwater, beca se you're supposed to stay there and wait for the guy to flip you back; and if you really wanna come out you gotta take off the kayak skirt. but it's really cool riding in the water and down the waterfalls, at the top the water forms all sorts of shapes a d really has a life of its own. oh weikai i meant that you took many, many photos.

Just met Karen today.. how many of you remember her I wonder.. My ol' BTC buddy... She's changed quite a lot.. No longer her old slightly 'healthy' self, but perhaps more a head t rner now. Strange... but after the first three months, we lost contact... she to her canoeing, me to my ODAC... wonder if this is already happening to our batch, that as our commitments and interests start to differ, cracks start to appear, then as we spe t more time apart, they develop into rifts... and soon, we'll find that we're standing on opposite sides of a crevasse, able to only shout across, but not able to whisper or touch... sighs... I berate myself for getting into too many things...and I lose t e time to spend with the things I used to, and still treasure....

I have to tell everyone this, I had lunch at a Chinese restaurant yesterday! Sighhh, good old everything without trying to cook it yourself. The run sounds like fun, though 12 hrs divided by 10 people equals 1.2 hrs each, ha ha. Sitting around feeling ired together and talking at night next to the track would be nice though. About the onelist and Cecil’s mail, I think that they treat the onelist like we do conversations, a place where they can write whatever they feel, and suppose that people will acce t it.
Weikai! You have 80 photos and that’s only the best?? Well I brought only 8 rolls of film and I regret that, cos film is really ex here, and there are ten million things I wanna take. Well Auckland is apparently the most urbanised area of NZ, so I try nd save it for better stuff. Last weekend I went to Rangitoto (which is the mountain I can see from my place), a volcanic island, and the climb up and down really reminded me of odac - trails up, a wonderful view at the top, and plodding down again. The v ew was sun on sea and the surrounding islands. There were very dark and dank lava caves too, though too me there was nothing lava-ish about it.
About the tuition agency, such people are a real pain; it’s good that you can actually do something about it.

I think there HAS been some few cases of the odac mailing list abuse, but not so much it's irritating. It's nice in a way to hear what's going on, even if frequently I can't / don't want to go for it. I think it does fulfil its role of keeping people info med of what's going on now. I'm up to my gills with 5 long term presentations/papers all due in a 10 day period after the break. hullo pple, i'm here spending my break in the Commstudies comp lab-just surfing ard and stuff. it's been quite a while since i wrote anything. anyway, life in NTU can be quite disconnecting, it's like i left behind my old life and now it's a total rush with new friends and events. It's a freshman thing, i suppose. U all seniors prob been there, don that
thing is, there's like so many grps of frds here and there, well, it can be quite a stretch. Well, we have hall-mate, sports camp OGs, as well as CommStudies friends, not to mention all u guys...and haha..lotsa crazy things we are doing also. BTW, HQ and are running for some Hall main comm, so if we do get it, we're gonna burn our nov and dec hols straight. so there, we've just signed away our holidays.
part of the freshmen experience is prob the startling rate of contact with members of the opposite sex. For us in commstudies, an influx is more like it. Do u know that there are like 5 or more girls for every guy in CS? I'm not drooling, at least not yet ...HQ and I have got our heads firmly attached to out shoulders....for now i hope....in the meanwhile, we're up to our necks, surprisingly not with schoolwork, but rather sports, games, and ecas. I'm actually joining ballroom dancing hahah...my partner's eally good...i dun even have to guide her, she just turns here and there...saves me any trouble....
anyway, theresa, how are u doing over there? clocking up the phone bills everynite with wen? dun worry, last i heard singtel and starhub's all got this super idd rates, so shld not be too taxing...
alvin, hey, u ard rite? how've ya been?...dun keep so quiet leh... go out for a movie or coffee, gotta see u again....

Xinyan, I don't agree that the emails were addressed to only specific people. These emails were targeted at majoritiy of the people. For example, the US universities thing, most of the people on this mailing list are younger than us. Some of them may b still looking for overseas universities, so it's good that somebody inform the rest about the universities fair.
For the cancer run, if not for the amount of emails that were generated, will anyone take notice of it? At least now we know that our j nior batch are taking part in this run, and if we want to go but cannot find enough people, we can propose to join them. Isn't this better than just restricting that email to their own batch mailing list? In a sense, it keeps us inform of what's going o in ODAC. Of course, the mailing list will be abused if someone sends an email asking to go for their own batch outing or asking people to pay ODAC fund, return stores etc...
As for Cecil's email, I understand why you feel uncomfortable. That's because we don't really feel close to Mr Leong. However, we must realise that all the batches after us were taken by Mr Leong. They just had a farewell party for him and were just sh ring their feelings. I don't see what's wrong with this.
If we are to restrict the emails to only those that concern every single one of us, then we will only get a few emails per year, for ODACIA and Rafflesian Recall, isn't that under-utilizing resources?
Weikai, for the Cancer Run, I'm game for it. But it's on the evening of Rafflesian Recall, that means that we cannot plan anything else (like dinner) on that day. Who else is interested?
Last thing: Hope it's not too late. Some of us are meeting up for brunch tomorrow morning, those who can go for it, meet at City Hall MRT station 1115h. Okay, good night...
xinyan - 07/22/00 15:15:43

i think there is a certain amount of abuse here because there are many mails addressed to only specific people, while this mailing list is for the entire odac, past and present. the individual batches would have their own mailing list right? like our batc . it's funny to mail to the entire odac things like: so batch 20, where shall we go for this and this.
eg there's the US universities thing, and there's all the i'm coming thing for the cancer run. tt's weird coz u need to form a group of 10, u can't un by urself, so tt should be more or less restricted to ur own batch's mailing list right? and i was very uncomfortable with cecil's mail about mr leong's departure from rj, wonder if anyone felt the same.
Weikai - 07/22/00 11:40:40
Comments:
Though I'm too irritated by the large amount of odac mails, I don't classify them as the result of "abuse". At least every mail as a point to be put across, for a good cause. Not that kind of one-liners which are totally boliao. Maybe we can like, just browse through the mails, and delete if found not impt. And I don't really think the contents are irrelevant, they let us know what's happening, which is the point of having the list. Of course, relevant or not is quite subjective.
BTW, you guys got my reply to the Cancer Run thing? Yeah, I'm interested, but apprehensive. How do u guys think?

I don't see anything wrong with all the emails that are sent on the mailing list. It's not as if they are spamming or forwarding chain letters. They are just encouraging more people to go for the run, which is for a good cause. The mailing list is set p so that we can share information with each other, I don't see any abuse here.

yeah, i think they're abusing the e-mail thing, but i dun want to complain, for fear of being taken for an irritating, lecturing senior. how?

Siwei: I don't recall being at citylink mall on last friday night... Well people, don't think I'll be free to meet up this sunday though. Btw, who's signed up the odac maillist? I'm getting quite a bit of mails which doesn't seem relevant to us... I think I'll delist myself...

Yup Siwei, we are meeting inside the gate, on the platform going to MARINA BAY, cos that's the starting point for the run. We won't exceed the time limit if everyone comes on time... Great idea to meet up for lunch followed by more sports... I want to ge back in shape = )
Time really flies, still got 5 more weekends before I return to Cornell...

Whoops... think I'm the one who's guilty of confusing Yvo.... HY & myself included... was all prepared to go down this Sat. Must meet up this weekend ... feel like I've been disconnected from the rest of the world... here in NTU, we're pretty much self-su ficient... and miles away from anybody else ... and I'm pretty sure we ALL haven't seen Alvin for a long time... so lunch after the run at 11 is the best thing I can think of... how's abt meeting like 1115 City Hall MRT??

Or else you're kinda dea . Hee hee hee.. Sorrie.. =Þ Comments: Comments: once upon a ime, when casinos were using 1 deck of cards for blackjack, there WAS a sure win formula, and casinos had to bar people who knew this sure win formula from their casinos forever. now they use 6 decks, so no more sure win. last time u could count probabili y, and bet small when the probability is against you, and big when for. so people at tt time won lots of money form the casinos. it's called counting cards, and i'm not sure of it's mechanics, but i'm going to learn :O) imagine cheating the money off your relatives during chinese new year. hahahaha <=evil laughter Comments: Comments: Comments: won some money from the casino. it's really cool, even though they specify "sm rt casual", u can go in in t-shirts, berms, and sandals. of course, tt made me look even younger than i oredi looked. and i was checked like 3 times in a night for my age--the age limit is 18. by the second check, and many many suspicious stares later--yo wouldn't believe how many bouncers they squeezed into that tiny space--i felt so harrassed tt i simply hollared at the next bouncer that came up to me. it was quite embarassing (for both me and the bouncer, should have seen him literally trying to run aw y), but it was peace for me the rest of the night, PLUS the next two nights. i think i'm really addicted to gambling now, good thing there's no casino in s'pore. i had this lucky streak during the cruise. the 1st night, i dared to try only the jackpots, and i won! about $170. with my last coin from my $30 bet, i struck a small jac pot, worth $200 (4 in a row, 5 in a row would give you $1000). i decided to stop playing for fear of losing back the winnings. second night, jackpots again. bet $20 this time. down to my last coin again (there must be really such thing as luck). u kno the new type of jackpots, not the bar bar bar kind, they really have a lot of nonsense to play with, and i got this option to bet on horses. well i bet my lucky number, number 2, and bingo! another small jackpot, but only worth $50. i dun understand it. he previous night, it's like it was so easy to win the $200 just by randomly pressing the buttons(i was really like closing my eyes and randomly hitting the jackpot machine), and this time i had to choose 1 horse out of 5 and only $50?? anyway, i left als , believe in leaving once u win, even if small small. third night. decided to bet only $10. u know how the more u win the more afraid u are of losing back ur winnings? yeah. but i still won! it was this "chameleon" jackpot machine. i had the luck of getting 5 chamleons in a row. i tot, wow~! win thousands or di, but later i found out WHY it was a chameleon machine. u have to wait for the chameleons u got to change colour, and ONLY when u have the same coloured chameleons in a row DEN can win. sigh~. had 4 red coloured chameleons and last one turned BLUE. and here went my thousands of dollars. anyway i won $100. tried blackjack also and bet $50 at once. the dealer was like eh~ and i gave her a wide grin. first card. a 3. i was like, ok, give me a 8 next. second card, a queen. i was like, ok say byebye to t e $50. zhe3 me4 xiang3 dao4 the next card tt came out was a 8! hahahaa 21 and i won. ran away with my winnings also. so in total in 3 days i won about $200-$300? not bad for a first timer in the casino huh? gambling is not tt difficult leh, mebbe i'll tur professional :ÞÞÞ Comments: Comments: Comments: Comments: Comments: Comments: Comments: Hello there! Last time I was here, I said that me and my roommate had resigned ourselves to another week in the freezer right? (Which we were starting to grow a liking for - there’s hot water everywhere, enough cutlery for everybody, a sunny dining roo , and strange characters all over the place - there was this 10-person maori family that sang wherever they went). Well the day after that was a sleepy Sunday, so when we went to see yet another apartment, we weren’t really expecting much, especially afte being rejected the day before. There was also a very old lady in the agent’s car whom we feared might be the tyrannical landlord. Well the apartment actually had furniture(!) and it is pretty close to work, though it is on Expensive Road (Parnell Road). he view is lovely too, there’re different-coloured houses and trees, and mountains and the sea. We told her straightaway we wanted it, paid her in exchange for the key, and moved right in. We also found out that Tyrannical Landlord was actually the agent’ mum, so we didn’t have to worry about her not liking us. That night after we came back to a home for the first time, and were locked out cos one of the keys was a bogus key! We panicked for a while because there was nowhere to lay our heads and the first day of work was the next day. Then we remembered our neighbour, a kind helpful young man from Scotland who had helped us lug our luggage in. From his home we called the amazing 24hr locksmith (amazing cos it’s Sunday night and here in NZ the streets are e pty on Sundays), and when he came we became poorer by $90. I was terribly homesick, but am better now. Everyday we return home from work, cook some dinner, watch lots of tv (they have lots of trash here - dumb soap operas and really really weird talk shows (ha ha), as well as the good old sitcoms), write email , and sleep very early. As for work, I’m doing something quite interesting here. I have to read up a lot though. My supervisor happens to be the boss, and I think she’s pretty demanding. I’m not sure if she wants me to take lots of initiative or something so I don’t know if I should ask questions on what’s the next best thing to do, or just get started by myself. But the people here are nice to work with. There’s an endless supply of coffee and fresh milk too. It all contributes to a pleasant environment. /p> School is starting right? How were the camps for the local fellas? Haoyang, didn’t take off your shirt right? That’s good, otherwise you would scare lots of people. It must be terribly exciting - a whole new beginning, people to meet, and interesting tuff to learn (I hope). Comments: Comments: No this is not the long entry. I'm writing this after I realised how toxic the stuff I'm working with is, and I just inhaled some of it on Friday. Nobody said anything about face masks, and I just got one after a week of working with the stuff. It says "Possible Carcinogen!" on the bottle. Well looks like I'll be just wondering when I'm gonna get it, and be extremely grateful if I don't. Comments: Comments: Comments: Comments: Comments: Comments: As for Rafflesian Recall, I think it will be good if everyone can make it. It will be "Ops Nos 2 minus all the stuff (as suggested by Penny)" and we can have birthday celebration for Joshua, Songhai and Yuihua (even though you are not around, heh). Perh ps can go to Ai Qing Hai in Marina (it's a Ming1 Ke1 Can1 Ting1, not sure if you guys are still interested in these kind of things. I like the place a lot but it cost like $13 per person). I had started on a description of Op Nos before I was whisked away for a camp, and now it seems hopelessly outdated, so I shall have to abort it. I had a good time listening, because many of you said things you wouldn't normally say - attit des and feelings that don't normally crop up in daily conversation. It's curious that an Op Nos always feels different from a normal group gathering. The difference being a feeling of nostalgia. Maybe this time it was partly the fact that we were out on b ach in the middle of the night, getting bitten by ten thousand mosquitoes and sandflies, and having long conversations, and all on ubin too. Nothing like the real thing to feel nostalgic. I will be leaving on the 19th of June, around 8pm I think. When I get to Auckland I will be staying at a hostel in Parnell and hoping very hard to find a flat for rent in the papers. I'm bringing a rice cooker and a few sweaters so that settles my bas c needs for the first coupla weeks. Should be starting work a few days after that, where I will delve into the fascinating development of antibactierial cosmetic pads to combat acne. I think it's interesting okay. Am quite lucky to get a project that actually interests me, makes working a lot more meaningful. Lastly, does anyone want to sell their backpack? I went hunting the other day and was shocked by the prices. Well if anyone doesn't need theirs anymore or knows anyone do let me know okay? thanks Comments: Comments: Comments: Comments: Comments: Comments: Comments: Comments: Comments: Comments: Comments: Comments: Comments: Comments: Oh, and also, naughty huaquan broke a young tree by attempting to lie on a hammock tied to it and the railing. The days are quite a sight - blue skies, yellow sun, grass so green it'll jump out at you - and we get to spend them in air-conditioned libraries. Never knew April was so pleasant. Oh! Yes! I'll be going to NZ for 6 months, for my industrial attachment. I didn't really expect that; beforehand I was coping with not getting the two local companies I wanted. I kind of messed up the interviews. I went through this what-should-I-do-wi h-my-life stage, and contemplated switching to Arts. Then came along this NZ one and after a weekend of indecision, I decided to go. I know it's only 6 months, but I'm quite wimpy (homesickness). First time on a plane! Anyone been there, have any info? Harlow... I'll be there this sunday ... but.. err.. lemme get this straight.. we're meeting INSIDE the gates (?) seemed a little weird to me.. I mean.. there's a time limit on how long you can stay in there, right? But oh well...
Anyway.. Wen.. as for tennis.. I really can't play.. I think I can mostly keep the ball from flying way out, but it's probably still out anyway. I would actually love to play, except that I work 5 1/2 days a week. I guess Sunday would be ok if we can find a place to play, AND i'm not too dead by the end of 7 km. I hope I can make it. =PP
Will be working until next week, and then the week after that is the OSMP for the overseas PSC people. That ends on Friday and I'm flying the MOnday after that (ie. 7th August). Hmm... can't believe that another summer is over. Oh well... seems really fas , and as usual, I didn't get to do half the things that I wanted to.
oklah.. can't write much more here.. have work to do. Till next time!

Can't believe I forgot to post it here so far, but my handphone number is 98555266, yes, me with a handphone. Jason, I got it. Call me if I don't turn up on time! Xinyan, I thought roulette was pretty good for the player too. By the way are you still in s hool, or are you free-lancing at casinos already? Siwei, I heard from Howie that you play tennis! Maybe can arrange a game sometimes to alleviate your boring working life. After the run, maybe? Since we'd all have our gear already.

Harlow...
I just realised that I haven't written in here for quite a while.. it's nice reading the entries though.. esp when I'm at work and bored. Well.. it's not that I don't have anything to do.. I still have that report on "the New Economy of Fin and", but sometimes, my mind just kinda goes blank (which is really rather irritating) and I don't quite know what to write.. or how to organise my report or whatever.. there's just so much info that I could just keep on reading and researching.. but I gu ss at some point in time, I'll have to stop and collate all that info. I mean... esp on something like e-commerce.. it's just endless... and I guess maybe just researching and not actually making progress on the report itself is... well.. not very satisfy ng.
Anyway... who's going for the Sheares bridge Run this sunday? How come like very few like that.. but whoever is going to be there.. do me a favour and don't run too fast, can? I'm so incredibly unfit now that I think almost any Tom, Dick or Harry on the s reet can outrun me. =( *sigh*.... Oh well.... Where are we meeting, anyway?
I guess everyone's goign to be kinda busy from this week onwards, considering that NUS and NTU have started.. Oh well... I haven't been having too much of a life the past two weeks anyway... everyday wake up 6+... Go to the office.... leave office anywher between 5:15 pm and 7 pm.... by the time I get home, it's time to cook dinner, eat dinner, wash up, bathe... and by the time all that is done and a bt of the daily paper is read, it's time to sleep. Hmm.. so this is what working life is all about... *sigh ... not a pleasing thought....
Chunda - 07/19/00 14:36:40
Errmmm... I'm sorry but when is the IBM Laptop deal for NUS freshies valid till?
xinyan - 07/18/00 04:27:24
:O) statistics say that people on average lose about $1000 an hour? something like tt. and different games have different "winning edges" for the casino. of course, all games have winning edges for the casino, some just more than others. games to stay awa from are casino war, carribean stud poker <= wat a suggestive name, carribean stud, and roulette, and some other games i can't remember. with an advantage for the house at 5.3 i think. blackjack has the lowest edge for the house, at 0.2.
Jeremy - 07/16/00 17:14:38
Oh ppl.. I got a new handphone number.. its M1 for all the SMS crazy ppl. 98452780
Weikai - 07/16/00 15:22:29
Wow winning streak huh, Xinyan. Next time we go out, you will take the place of Jason as the person to Kotoh free drinks/meals from!
While I was in Queenstown(NZ) I visited the casino too, a small one. Tried a few dollars at the jackpots, the electronic ones. Yeah like XY said, just close eyes and press the buttons. But I wasn't that lucky lar, I lost everything. Anyway, din feel that bad cos it's just a few dollars and I just wanted to try it for fun.
Heh xinyan seems like you are showing symptoms of falling prey to the temptations of gambling, which is totally depended on LUCK. Anyway I don't think gambling is easy, unless you found a foolproof way to win for sure. Casinos would be broke if that happens, and all its statisticians sacked. Well, it's no harm trying gambling for recreational sake, but I never believe in doing it for livelihood.
xinyan - 07/16/00 06:13:59
hi! just came back from this damn expensive cruise. star cruises. am a shade darker now, after 3 days of hard work sweating on the deck chair. heeheehee, din peel somemore.

Well, if anyone has been trying to contact me the last 2 days, sorry.. my handphone conked out the last 2 days and I couldn't repair it coz I was a guest at the National University Hospital Ward 64, Bed 14.. or was it Ward 63.. nevermind.. its history any ay. Food poisoning and high fever... 39.7degrees.. collapsed in school.. was even jumping around 2 hours ago auditioning pretty young things for the Science Bash pageant.. which leads me to... anyone wants to go for Science Bash?.. its on 3rd September an tickets go at $10 for a free drink at Club Samsara... mm.. or yah.. going back even further, anyone else fell sick after eating at Newton?.. I think that was the cause of it... shan't even attempt to describe the horrible stuff that came out from me. Oh. . and I just got discharged, so I dun think I'll be in shape for even the fun run Jason, you guys go ahead... dun think I was in shape even before the illness, but then there's no doubt about the shape I'm in now.. Hello! I've been lazing around since i've returned =) Just wanted to check if any of the guys here play Diablo2 online cos I'm very bored.
Weikai - 07/14/00 02:10:19
Another entry from NZ! Okay I've been here for some time already, finally got the chance to sit down nicely in a warm shop having internet access. I'm into my last day here in Christchurch. Been roaming around independently cos the tour group has returned to s'pore, I'm on extension. Been around the South Island, and am already greatly impressed by the beauty and hospitality of this place. Land, cars, houses are cheap, people are so damn nice. I think NZ makes a good place for migration after my retirement. Buy over a farm and house f cing the mountains.
Ok other than that, have been trying stuffs too. Did jetboating, but din try bungee and rafting cos of GUTS and budget restrains. They cost at least a hundred bucks. Hot air balloons, chopper rides, scenic flights, all those go up to 200 NZD. Expensive shit, but I'll come back for those sometime in the future.
Went to ski too, at the Mt Hutt ski area, supposedly one of the most beautiful ski areas. Had a starter pack lesson, not too bad, learnt to stop and turn. Got the basics control of the ski already. But that alone took me one whole day to learn. After gett ng the hang of it, wow, I didn't want to leave the mountain. The thrill of gliding down the snow is just shiok. Did I mention the countless butt-meet-snow encounters? Plenty of those.
Will be going back to Singapore real soon, my flight's this midnight. Then I'll join you guys for Rafflesian Recall.
Penny - 07/13/00 13:18:21
Hey Theresa, what you said about 'a whole new beginning, people to meet, and interesting stuff to learn', that's happening to you too isn't it? =) Anyway, hope you're enjoying yourself, 6 months will be over before you know it.. so go travel! Tan Choon Tat, how can you work 5 days only? Isn't GIC a stat board? Urgh... I've started work at DSTA, at DTT, and I guess it's quite interesting. You all know the pretty suspension bridge at SAFTI? Was designed by my boss... then today was at the new Guards camp at Bedok, did you know they have an astroturf hockey field?? Anyway, just wanted to say that I was very happy to see all those who went for dinner that night at Newton Circus.. hope to see the rest of you all soon okie? Rafflesian Recall...

Hihi!!!
I FINALLY got my internet access back.... My brother's computer dieded a while back and he just reformatted it.. Anyway, I'm so glad to get email access back again. Talking of email. For this summer, if you people wanna email me, can you emai BOTH sy.wei@cornell.edu and LEW_sy_wei@mti.gov.sg ? So I can check both at work and at home? Now that I'm working (at MTI, ECOnomics division, for anyone who's interested.. =P) I come back pretty much at the same time as my bro, so I don't like to fight ith him for use of the comp... so I'd raher check at work, but then after this summer, the MTI account is goign to be scrapped, so that's why I want to keep the emails permanently under the cornell account. And.. oh yah.. my work phone (I actually get my wn cubicle, own PC, own phone.. was rather surprised.. I thought they'd just chuck me in some obscure corner, at some temporary folding table, and say "You.. sit there!" or some crap like that.. but they're actually treating me rather nicely. =P). Anyway, as I was saying. my work phone is 332-7032.It's a direct line. So, for the thingy tomorrow, can someone call me if there are any changes? if not, then I'll assume that it's 6:30 pm at Orchard MRT, yah? And if you get the answering machine.. don't assume t at i got the message, hor! Cause I haven't gotten the pin for that phonemail thingy yet.. dunno when I'll get it
Oh.. btw.. Penny.. I'll go shopping with you, if you want =P But if you want to go during the day.. a bit the hard lor.. unless you wanna go on a sat. afternoon. Anyway.. can always ask me if you want. =)
So... are you any rounder from last year? =P If you are, and if it's any consolation.. so am I. =P I actually hit 50kg. So rest assured the rest of the female population is getting fat together with you. [grin]
Penny - 07/08/00 17:51:55
I think I'm writing alot, cos nothing to do at home, so forgive me. =) Just another suggestion for dinner on Rafflesian Recall day... Pasir Ris Park. A bit far though, but quite nice place near. Eh, don't know whether I suaku or not, but does anyone know hether the hawker centre thingee there is new? The one where can dine next to the sea, then got pretty playgrounds and bicycle rental kiosks?

hi all, here's one suggestion for Monday evening (100700). We can meet up for dinner at Orchard MRT 1830h, (maybe go to the foodcourt at Scotts to eat, or somewhere else where there is less people). Watch Frequency at Lido 2100h (Xiufeng, that's the ear iest time that I can find, GV Marina and Suntec are showing at 2140h and 2130h).. so far, Xiufeng, Songhai, Penny(?) and I are going. Anyone else interested? contact either of us okay?
Penny - 07/08/00 16:47:13
Hi all, another attempt to organise a gathering.. Rafflesian Recall is on July 29 (a Saturday), so can we have dinner or something that evening? Won't really be a second Op Nos, cos got no gift exchange and stuff, just dinner and catching up okie?
Chunda - 07/07/00 16:34:56
http://www.infophil.com/Singapore/Alumni/RJC/ Just thought you might be interested.
Penny - 07/06/00 18:00:35
Eh, anybody free to go out dinner one night ah? Maybe Monday night?
Chunda - 07/04/00 16:18:31
Hi people (hi Penny). Just dropping a quick note here. Firstly I've begun attachment at Raffles City so if anyone is free around lunchtime do give me a page and we'll meet up then. Secondly, now that people from UK are streaming back, let's think of a sec nd main gathering for all of us in Singapore. My apologies but I'm flooded with a lot of material right now so somebody else must do the job. Volunteers? Last of all, Christina, if you're reading this from PWC (London), guess what? I'm meeting your roomat everyday!? Strange (almost eerie) coincidence but quite an interesting character... harharhar. Well, later.
xinyan - 07/04/00 04:55:25
i quote huaquan "still having trouble getting use to the hokkien culture". hah! a ns person having trouble getting used to the hokkien culture! spare a tot for me then, imagine the hardships i had to go thru, sob sob...
Penny - 07/03/00 17:10:55
Hello everyone, I'm back in sunny, (hot and humid) Singapore! =)Well, apart from that, it's good to be back. Have only seen Weikai so far, hope to see the rest of you soon. Jason, can I get a collar pin from you? By the way, this is a dumb question, but does anyone know whether Defence Science and Technology Agency let females wear pants to work? Hehe, and does anyone want to go shopping with me??
HQ - 07/03/00 13:49:00
Yes Yes!!! I need one of them collar pin thingys... thanx Jason. Just came back from NTU Sports Camp... tons of fun... was juz too bad tt I lost my spec half-way thru the camp and had to go blind thru much of it..for all of u who dun got perfect eyesight, it's kinda hard to understand, but when the world is a blur, it's really hard to have fun... but... i tried my bestest...many thanx to Wen for lending me the specs on such short notice...and his sis for driving me back..=) still having trouble getting use to the hokkien culture[no, u heard me rite...it's hokkien, not china]... as least it was so for sports camp. got little sleep, but it wasn't really tiring...after all they have to think abt the girls. >sigh

hi all, Chunda and I just went back to RJ yesterday. We went into Odac Room and discovered that our batch trek T-shirt is the ONLY one that is missing from the display. Is anyone holding on to an extra trek T-shirt and is willing to contribute it to Oda Room? We still "owe" the Odac Room our batch album. Understand that it is very difficult to get it done now, perhaps we can set a dateline for ourselves and work towards it. Say by Odacia next year? Theresa, what happened to all the articles that we ave to you?
Another thing, Rafflesian Recall is on 29th July. Odac is having a whole day of activities. It's the day before Songhai's birthday. So try to keep that day free okay? I believe that the PRO for batch 16 will be contacting us soon. [I have checked the flag pole, it's still there. Guys, start training up okay? Our target is a strong man. heh heh...]
Last thing, I managed to get 5 Odac collar pins from the QM. Anyone who don't have it and want it, please contact me okay? First come first serve... HQ, you need one izzit?
Last last thing... Welcome back, Penny!!! We will meet up soon...
xinyan - 06/30/00 14:26:59

Joshua - 06/30/00 13:05:53
I suppose most jobs pay better than JP mac's. But Xinyan's suggestion is a little hard on the dignity no? I can't believe your dad actually said that tho. Speaking of jobs, I went down to talk to the Straits Times supplement ppl and I am now anxiously wai ing for my first assignment...then I shall call myself a freelance journalist! (yeah rite)
xinyan - 06/30/00 09:00:22

For a person who sucks at lit and have't done it since sec2, the daily readings and essay reponses are really killing me. Looks really like I'll fail my first course in COrnell. Yup, got to get back to my reading. Got a 3-page draft due the next morning. Take care ppl. bye

Then I guess things will be more settled. Thanx for coming to send me ff at the airport. Felt quite bad for not spending much time with all of you. Anyway, I'll fill you all in abt my life when it's more settle. Until then, take care all of you. Miss you all.
Weikai - 06/25/00 07:26:57
Sorry for the last minute notice, I can't go for the arts fest closing ceremony thing, cos something cropped up last minute. Don't think anyone would read this in time lar.
Remember some time ago someone asked me to add a link for people who visited the wrong page and couldn't add entries. There you are, at the top of the page, a small line of words. Click on those and you'll come to the right page. Anyway, gonna repeat the possible URLs that will bring u to the right page:
http://www.oocities.org/Yosemite/Falls/5560/conv.html
http://www.oocities.org/taywk.geo/conv.html
http://i.am/conv
Please remember the last one, the simplest one, when you think you always forget the first two. That all!
xinyan - 06/25/00 05:16:28
sounds exciting to me, theresa! i mean, all alone in a foreign land having lots of problems wah, tho i doubt excitement is anywhere near your minds now :Þ . but when you've finally solved everything, i bet you'll feel a great sense of achievement! are you sure it's racsism? tt sucks!! :(
Jeremy - 06/24/00 17:02:54
Nice to hear that you're settling down nicely over there Theresa and that the people there are being friendly and helpful. Mmmm... hope you get a good place nearby that's cheap so that you can scrounge up cash to go travelling at the end of the year. Hel us spot some cheap nice places to stay there ok? :) Well.. how's the job?.. You didn't tell us about what you've been doing so far?. Have you started work oredi?
Siwei - 06/24/00 14:35:43
Harlow... small announcement. Whoever wants to go to watch that closing celebrations thingy -- Sunday evening, meet at 6 pm at Bishan MRT. Yah?
theresa - 06/24/00 09:25:48
Hi people. Trying to find a place to stay is a real pain. My workplace is in Parnell, and so is my hostel, but this is actually a posh area, and so all the groceries and the aparment rents are higher than elsewhere. We went down to a nearby area yesterday Newmarket, and there we learnt that campbell soup doesn't have to cost $2.50 and shampoo $13 (!!!!). The cheapest food is still fast food, and the BK here has no mushroom swiss or broiler! When I asked the guy if they have it, he said "this is BK" and I old him that "BK has it elsewhere, you know". Well as I was saying the rent here is therefore rather high, and we were considering living further away and spending on transport instead. Well the whole point of this is that today we found a great apartment It was near our workplace and cheap and had a great view. And the washer and dryer is much cheaper! (Oh by the way dryers really DRY clothes, and they when they come out they're real warm and nice to hug). We quickly said yes to the agent and filled up f rms and the lady said tomorrow she'll come by and collect the money. When we came back that evening I got a call from her saying the landlady didn't want two persons, and preferred either a single person or a couple. Tell me, what is the difference betwee 2 people and a couple? Well we think it may be a rascist sentiment especially since the lady is 90 over. Sigh. We have found another house further away, with a couple in it, but the trees kinda disturb my friend. Hmm. We can't just wait and see too, we g tta tell them right away what we want. Feel quite bad about that. Decisions are risky and therefore difficult to make. Well I hope things turn out well.

Hey.. Anyone game for going to Junction 8 for this bells-and-trapeze act? It's part of the closing performances for Arts Feste... I saw it on the news and it looked pretty interesting. It's on SAt and Sunday evening at 6:30 pm. So.. anyone interested?
xinyan - 06/23/00 16:31:04
oops, looks like i bolded the entire page, hehe sorry wee^2. i actually wanted to put [br] one
theresa - 06/23/00 09:29:05
hi guys, you can mail me at colourpencel@yahoo.co.uk. Don't ask me why it's uk. I don't have enough net time to find out. You can still mail me at pacnet, but for now I can read mails for the yahoo one for conveniently. Will have more time to tell you mor from monday, which is when I start work and get internet access (phew). The people there are really warm and nice, so I feel much better now, like there's someone else here. Have cooked spaghetti (more used to the kitchen), and hot baths are the highligh of my day (yes HQ I know you have better suggestions). Sleep with 3 layers and 4 blankets, some of which have "US Navy" marked on them, and I don't think it's meant as part of the grunge look. See there I go talking again. Bye, bye, bye!
xinyan - 06/23/00 08:55:27
survey: do people call you xiao di/ah boy/xiao mei or xiao jie/xian sheng/lao ban (<= arrgh, hates people who call guys lao ban!) when you go out?
Siwei - 06/23/00 02:50:33
Hello... well.. first things first... I thought I prob should tell everyone that I've moved already. I don't stay at Everton Park anymore (though the shop's still there, and I do go there occasionally). I stay around the Sengkang area. Address: 3 Buangkok South Farmway 1 #03-214. If anyone wants to call, it's 386-9064 or 387-7816. But... er.. try not to call too late. After maybe 10:30 pm, don't call the 387-7816 number, cause the phone's in my Dad's room and he sleeps early. And after 12 MN, errr.. try no to call the 386-9064 number either, cause that one's in my brother's room... and he works Mon - Sat. Sorry for being so troublesome...
Anyway... so we just saw Marvin off late last night. Hey Marvin... let us know when you get there and have settled in, yah? =) And I'm still sorry for coming so late..
Weikai - 06/20/00 17:21:13
Uploaded 4 photos taken when sending Theresa off, courtesy of HQ. They are quite huge, average of 300kb each. Click on left eye, and you shld see the links below.
Added in a convenience function. Got that problem when u added your entry and you got to press back 2 times to get back to Conv? I'll let in a tip, just click on QUADRICLOCK on the left. It'll bring u back. But u may have to refresh the page to see your entry updated.
Weikai - 06/20/00 15:26:32
Good to hear from you Theresa, the best way to show that you're safe and sound. Am terribly sorry about not turning up at the airport as well. Was playing bball with some old sec sch frens and we played much longer than I expected.
Yes it is certainly terrifying to just leave for a foreign place, quite alone. But I guess it really helps build independence, which I haven't had the kind of chance to. The fear is most prob an initial unfamiliarity kind of thing. It should go away real soon.
I will be experiencing the bitter coldness of NZ real soon, my tour just got confirmed. But no chance that I'll bump into you since we'll be at opposite sides of the country. Anyway, maybe it helps to know that a friend is in the vicnity of the boundary = .
Jason - 06/20/00 10:46:09
Theresa: I couldn't see you off at the airport because I had a terrible headache after work yesterday. It was so bad that I went to sleep even without having dinner. Anyway, enjoy yourself in NZ. Do you have any email address (like Hotmail) that we ca use?
siwei - 06/20/00 09:01:28
Ermm... not meaning to be troublesome.. but can someone add NZ time to the Quadclock? =P No big hurry, I guess.... but would be nice to have it there... though I wonder how accurate it is leh.. my previous entry seems to have the time wrong.. should've be n 9+, not 8+ am.... London time... Oh well... nevermind..
Siwei - 06/20/00 08:56:57
My Email:sy.wei@cornell.edu
Hihi Theresa!!
It's so good to hear from you. Must say that that was FAST... =P Anyway, if it's any consolation, it may be wintry and cold now, but it'll be spring in another month or so (?) and so by the time you've finally settled down fully the weather will be just n ce for going around. =P Remember to layer up to keep out the cold hor... works better than trying to find one coat that's thick enough to keep you warm. Hope the people you've met so far have been decently friendly and helpful ... =)
Well.. do keep us up to date on things going on in your life. Email also can -- then you can compose the email offline and just send it online -- then it won't cost you so much money. Or else can compose your conv entries offline and just cut and paste... but don't worry about your thoughts coming out in a jumble.. After all.. I'm sure we're all used to you talking like that.. Hee hee.. =P (sorrie...)
take care, yah?
theresa - 06/20/00 06:56:26
Hi there, my friend woke up so here I am again! Internet connection is rather ex here, makes my thoughts all come out in a jumble (in the previous entry). I guess I am rather scared, especially when I'm in a dark freezer, the whole thing just looms above e and I wonder why, but I don't dwell on it for more than a second, so I'm still quite okay, so don't worry. I think things should pick up with an rented room with insulation and hopefully an internet connection
theresa - 06/20/00 06:00:43
hi, it's really really cold here. I woke up and decided to hunt down the comp and tell u guys this before going back to sleep. Am staying at a hostel that's really sparse, and thick blankets and layers of clothing aren't quite enough cos there's no heatin or double-glazed windows. Seeing a computer and the "connecting" thing and this page! really really makes me feel a lot better. Arrived this morning wishing to sleep but had to do stuff like get lots of food first. and so we tiredly made our way to the m in street, and then lugged big bags of fruits and stuff back. Despite my mum's repeated warnings, I did leave some stuff behind which I wish I have now. Like more sweaters! And a pillow case. Parnell Road is really quaint and pretty, but rather expensive or basic needs. We came back and slept after walking down that. Right now is dinnertime I suppose. My friend is sleeping, though she declared a few hours before that she would be busy unpacking. The flight was beautiful, I saw ten thousand stars and cloud below, and... dawn! There was diferent coloured blue all over the place! And cutting thru the clouds was amazing too. Well i should go. thanks for coming all the way down to the airport.
Howie - 06/19/00 18:53:56
tis the season of many a departure, life would just be that much more quiet wouldn't it? hate to see u guys go one by one, it saddens me, tho i dun like to show it...:-(...
it can get really terrifying to go to a strange new place by urself, with all ur loved ones left behind u thoussands of miles away....will miss 3sa's heckled laffter much, and hey 3sa, if u read this, i hope u are all safe and settled in.....keep convs al ve all with ur NZ exploits ok? ok...shan't depress myself further..//
HQ - 06/19/00 16:09:39
As I took the bus home from the airport alone today, I couldn't help wondering how lonely it would be for me to go off for 6 months to work in a strange land with but one not-so-good friend to depend on physically for all my non-physical needs. Thinking b ck, I took more flights in the army then I did b4 I entered NS... not all of them memorable... but still unforgettable... feeling strangely contradictory tonite... Departures r always so badly handled... especially when u have many grps of friendz who dun noe each other, your family, your relatives, etc... Wish Thres all the best and hope tt the panic tt comes with the realisation of your situation never rises beyond controllable levels
xinyan - 06/18/00 03:43:51
hehe, looks like food is still more attractive than great bods...
HQ - 06/17/00 15:39:05

Suzhen - 06/13/00 13:31:26
I'm going to watch Rock On on Saturday, I think that's the last day. Anyone else game to go? Jeremy, asking me for a date is it? Sure... always glad to oblige. Xinyan, don't you know those rock-climbers are the best looking, why do you think I'm so 'on' a out it? =)

Well here I am moping around at home when I'm supposed to be living it up at 21 days of OBS. What a bummer of a flu, and the evil doctor just wouldn't reduce my excuse PT. They were never like that in NS were they? You had to grovel to get more MC. Now yo want less and they insist on giving more. Sheesh. Yeah well being home has its consolations. Sorry I won't be free. Do enjoy yourselves and don't lose too much sleep over the jigsaw puzzle! Btw... I love the Long Vacation theme song and one of the never-ending background tunes at their favourite nightspot ("...over and over..."?). And the firewor s scene... and Sena's preliminary piece for the piano competition... and the jokes... and just about everything else.
Siwei - 06/08/00 16:38:17
Hello... er... sorrie.. but where does jeremy stay and can soemone tell me how to get there from my place?

Xinyan does have a way of putting things so matter-of-factly yet nicely. Anyway it was a real pleasure to talk to you guys. Even though we don't meet up that much anymore, and may not have that much to say, without some silent gaps, to each other one to o e, but it is great to see how in a group we can talk so easily. As Weikai put it, we have reached a stage where we can do that. To hear the different world views and recent ongoings and past stories. Marvin you've got a great story there, so perfectly nic and natural and smooth, so ... you. Weikai and Jeremy don't worry we don't regard you guys are the 3rd party. After all that's what friends are for. And you guys that didn't go missed Vivien and Ronald's (what? who's Ronald???) touching tale. For those e gaged in long distance relationships like Marvin, good luck keeping it all together. For those keeping an eye out for someone special, good luck. For Haoyang, good hunting. Fill in the Book so I have stuff to read when I come back... Songhai's Turkey stor es, HQ's orientation camp, etc. Do write about your life. This book is the filler in-between yearly Op Nos-es, you know. The feeling I enjoyed there is duplicated in part everytime I read here... writing may not come as naturally to all but there's always an uncritical (well, sometimes) audience here for you.
HQ - 06/05/00 03:17:39
Hey! I beg to differ I din exactly break the tree noe, just splintered it a little tt's all. took the pains to choose the one with added support some more[a wooden plank tied to it] Was just toking to another friend abt keeping in touch with old friends a one's social circle widens.. Above all, never wait too long to do the "catching up" coz it'll just get harder & harder as time goes by. I guess u might say it all boils down to time management, and putting in tt EXTRA effort for those further from your c rrent life... which brings me to another dinner affair. next Sat? sorta to dine with Yvo b4 she flies off for her europe trip, and partly for Thres b4 she flies off for her 6mth long New Zealand attachment. give me a call or email and I'll furnish you all with further details later.
Xinyan - 06/04/00 11:13:24
Hi! I'm sorry I missed out on the captain's ball also, but the talks were really fun. Basically we just formed circles and talked. Sometimes the "cirle" will include the entire group, somtimes just a few people. Whew! I think our batch can really talk. We talked from (since I got there) 7.30pm to 3am-4am? and finished about 4-5 bottles of 1.5l water along the way. We really talked about everything under the sun, which is good because it means we enjoy each other's company so much it didn't matter what we t lked about. We talked about the blasted mosquitoes, crime in america, chinese herbs, coffee..., well you get the idea. The best part was when we sat in our "full circle" and listened to all the juicy bits where everyone will take turns to report on their ecent "activities". Informative!
Alan - 06/04/00 07:35:53
Hey guys, I'm sorry I wasn't around on saturday even though I said that I'd be there. I was really tired on sat afternoon after school (plus some basketball that my classmates tricked me into playing), and I didn't have the energy to take bus all the way rom NUS to Changi. I'll try and be around the next time we have a gathering.
Wen - 06/02/00 15:47:55
That'll be a fresh uni-UNDERgrad. You're WAY ahead of your time, HQ. Do tell us all about the primary school teachers and all your pretty follow-helpers....
HQ - 06/02/00 05:12:42
Totally agree with Howie... Convs has been spookily quiet. It's either pple r too busy with making full use of their break from sch/before sch, or they're just bumming their lives away at home & feeling too guilty to tok abt here. I myself am terribly gui ty of the latter, sincerely hope the rest of u aren't... have been trying out a camp job thingy tho.. taking care of irritating primary skool kids can be really exasperating... if u guys r interested, I can probly write a 1000 word essay rite here rite no [since it's still fresh in my head at the moment] Have finally received my Uni entry letter... now I got a stack of paperwork to settle b4 the Ubin-thingy... why does every dept require a photo???why does it have to be raining now??? why do they need the reply so soon??? why couldn't they have sent me the forms on Monday?? >sigh<... the trials of a fresh Uni-grad...
Chunda - 06/01/00 03:42:10
I'm sososo sorry people...I won't be there on Saturday afternoon because of this very important last minute event that just popped up. Hopefully I'll be able to get out of there by 6pm and rush over for dinner... which also means I'll probably stay over t make this odac gathering any significant. Btw Jason will only be there after 3pm so pls leave your handphones on for us to contact the main party. Basically arrangements have been made to provide for most possible activities so it's really up to you guys to decide what to do and start on it. I will talk to a few more people about the specific details. Take care and have fun... (Duuwen don't leave w/o seeing me!)
howie - 05/29/00 18:55:10
want to apologise for not turning up for the ghim moh thing jason, and to shiyin too..haha...i called u but did not turn up myself, sorry yeah?
anyway, just wondering is songhai really in turkey? and jason u want to eat local food rite? lets goto chomp chomp or chinatown...makan local ok? suzhen come along too yeah? u'd be in spore till?
anyway, convs has been quiet, real spooky with mundanity, hope to really rev things up this ops Nos.....not just to catch up, but mebbe in a way, to rekindle some old bonds, i noe theres lots thats been eroded over the past year, with work, school, "other partners", ORD, etc. We dun even noe how much each of us have changed- we meet up every now and then, say hi and catch up on the latest events in our lives, but dun really go very far beyond there.
Dun really ask for very much, but just a little bit more than just the usual concoction, coz we really are beginning to sound like work colleagues at times....just want to get some thoughts out to share, and mebbe set some things in motion....alrite then, going off...hope that we can share among us more than just a cup of coffee.....and hey..call each other anytime ok? i'm game, for troubles and other stuff...we'll be ard.....have a great week ok?...love, Howie
- 05/26/00 11:38:44
Yes it's CHANGI.... My age (+very late nights+ too much work) is catching up with me. Pls do NOT show up at Punggol unless you want seafood and a trip to... Tekong?
Howie - 05/25/00 17:08:53
Punggol jetty??? is that really what its called? i always thought its changi point, or changi village...but punggol seems a little far off doesnt it?
Chunda - 05/25/00 14:59:40
Forgot to add: 1) In line with our fine Batch tradition of gift exchange, please await an email from Weikai identifying your receipient. 2) We have urgent positions for the titles of PR Manager and Activity Coordinator. PR manager should ensure that everybody has received Ops Nostalgia/Gift exchange notification and gather subsequent feedback/suggestions to the event organisers. The Activi y Coordinator should come up with novel, exciting and popular activities especially for the torchfire. No prior experience required, only free and enthusiastic people should apply. Thanks!
Chunda - 05/25/00 14:51:22
Hello! Ops Nostalgia 2000 has been fixed on 3-4 June. Please meet at Punggol jetty playground at 1 p.m. with lunch eated or brought. For details do refer to the mass email. See you there!

Hi all, I won't be back in Msia, Spore till August so won't be ther for op nos :( But anyway enjoy yourselves ya? ANd saw those photos of christmas in ubin....... Is that really a man-made, decorative fence behind 'poser' and 'yuling' in the 3rd photo? I am so utterly disgusted! what is this world coming to? chris
Jason - 05/24/00 10:27:08
Hi all, want to let everyone know that I am back in Singapore for a few days already. Want to meet up with you guys but I am overwhelmed with work now. Feeling very drained after work everyday.
My pager is back in operation, the number is 95493412. br>
Alvin - 05/24/00 09:33:21
Hmmm.... When will I be able to have the ORD feeling? I'm real happy for all you ORD personnel =) See you all in July! HQ, you must start updating me on all the new computer games okie?
HQ - 05/21/00 13:52:49
That sounds like a suspiciously untrustworthy doc noe... Anyways... if any of u guys r interested... it was a pretty eventful round-island cycle we had with a couple of Leroy's friends. 1st to kana was yours truly with my front brake wire breaking b4 the tart of the trip[the back one broke later]. Then gd o'Jeremy falls fer no apparent reason[was on one of his dash-to-the-front routines]. 2 of the members of the gentler sex "fell out"[conveniently near one of their homes] & finally, the greatest miracle f them all... the 5 of us left actually finished the trip in one piece b4 the sun rose... =) AND not to Forget, I was one of them few who survived the 2 yr 4 mths of army shit ... >sigh< to finally see my Pink IC again... =)
Jeremy.. - 05/21/00 03:31:47
Hey!...Something caught my wheel okie... and well.. the bikes in the same working condition except for some scratches and sheared off metal...I did't break anything more painful... The doctor ad I both thought it was a bad sprain till the X-rays came out. . His reaction was quite amusing... You broke it! You actuaslly broke it!!!...wow...(Sounds like some doctors-to-be that we know...now got a cast and sling...damn hard to bathe.
Wen - 05/21/00 01:20:25
The Jeremy's patented method of breaking fall: Step 1: Fall down on your bike for no apparent reason. Step 2: Miraculously escape with only minor scrapes. Step 3: Hit ground, hard, with right hand. Get thumb broken, real good. Me: "Jeremy, how the heck did you get your entire LEFT side scraped and you right hand so swollen?" Jeremy: "Break fall what..." Lesson: Don't believe everything they teach ya in the army... especially in unarmed combat courses.
Jeremy - 05/20/00 20:54:07
Exams are over... My post exam projects are all finally completed. The NS Boys are ORDing, the local unis are having holidays, the overseas ppl are coming back. Had everything all planned out with trips to go to Berkelah Falls and Kota Tinggi. My 21st bir hday is coming up.
Then I got stupidly careless and broke the thumb on my right hand. Got a cast for 6-8 weeks and a huge medical bill. Anyone wants to sign? On the cast I mean...
at least noww I can train ambidexterity...
Chunda - 05/20/00 13:48:31
ORD LOH! (I could not resist kissing my IC when I received it) Anyone game to go back to RJ this Wednesday? I will go back anyway with Yuanzhu to get my final school report for UPenn done, so if there's a group of us around we could also call up the Batch XV and join in for their activities. (Prior to this some of us were actually toying with a similar return-to-RJ idea, remember?) Who knows, we may also get some stores for our own official gathering coming up very soon. I'm sorry I can't make it tmrw morning... I've sth on. And Welcome Back Jason!!!
HOWIE - 05/19/00 19:46:42

Being a well-trained Singaporean... I say, go with the authoritarianism. Chose one that seems good to you and fix it as that, will probably be as good as any.
Jason - 05/18/00 11:23:59
Friday and Sat means 1 1/2 days of work. See how ... I don't know how it will affect me. Don't know Suzhen's secondary email address. (Don't think she has one)
Just went to watch sunrise and ended up drenched...sigh...
Chunda - 05/18/00 04:20:12
Btw Suzhen's university address rejects emails at the moment. Anyone has another address for contact?
Chunda - 05/18/00 04:18:34
Just a quick glance at the repsonses so far and a few updates. It does seem inconvenient for some of us to turn uo on the first weekend of June, noteworthy of which are Yuihua's Tokyo immersion, Yvonne's church camp and Ruth's sport's camp. If we shift it one week before, Jeremy should not be able make it, Siwei will JUST be back (i.e. 28th). The third whacky alternative is a Friday/Saturday combination as proposed by Howyang and Joshua so that at least we can see each other's faces for one of the days. That may mean sacrificng Friday afternoon's work for some, though (e.g. med students). Anyone has a strong solution/opinion, or btw am I flooding people with too much info such that a bit of authoritarianism is preferred?
Weikai - 05/18/00 02:55:43

(it's the same thing..)...yah? T anks.. I don't check that one anymore, see....
Wen - 05/17/00 16:38:04
Why is it rare guests always appear together....
Alvin - 05/15/00 15:25:44
Hi every! Just wanted to say that UK daylight savings has been quite some time ago, so please forward our London clock by 1 hr =) Too bad I can't make it for any June gathering, but enjoy yourselves! Maybe see you all in July. I bet my computer misses me. . My sis said something about it crashing ....

Jason - 05/14/00 12:23:50
Siwei, I am leaving on the 19th, 6 am flight from Ithaca. Need a few days to pack up and settle all my stuff before leaving. I am flying with Meng Fai, via the "screwed up" route, thru Philadelphia, SF, Korea then Singapore.
Chunda, I still owe you another email. Will write to you after my exams are over and when I am more sane = )
Theresa, can you help me sign up? BUT, I don't know if I can make it. Depends on whether I got jet lag and my family. Big Walk is just a FEW hours after I touch down, I will definitely go for it if my parents don't mind.
Wen - 05/14/00 12:14:48
Congrats Chunda, it sounds pretty cool to study in both the States and Japan during your undergraduate years. Make it a UK masters and you'll be one well-travelled student. Btw 5-6th June sounds a little awkward for me and Josh since we're leaving early m rning 6th June. Is there any special reason why it's so late?
Chunda - 05/14/00 11:08:20
Pls check your mailboxes for proposals on Ops Nos, which will be firstly held on the 5-6 June. Anyone who does not have the email pls inform me asap and we'll overcome that technical glitch together. Thks!
theresa - 05/14/00 03:27:38
Hey Jason, you still wanna go for Big Walk? What about the rest - ord guys and the students on holiday? Go lah go lah. Then we can go there and make a lot of nice. Those who wanna go, quick mail your details to Jeremy today okay? So he can register us all with his CREdit card.
Chunda - 05/14/00 00:58:06
Hi... actually it's 0815 S'pore time and I've been on my computer since 0600. Why? Just sent my brother off to China on a backpacking trip to Beijing-Shanghai. Interesting huh? I know I own everyone sth. in the form of Batch XII gathering dates as well as probable activities. Unfortunately only about 2/3 have been contacted/have bothered to reply so I'll have to go ahead without any additional information. Promise to paste sth. p by end of today. Btw, a piece of personal news. 2 days ago I received this confirmation email of my acceptance into the Huntsman Program in International Studies and Business, which I believe I shared with some of you about. The interesting bit is doing courses on various international topics such as IR, civilisation studies, IE and so forth. In particular I should be taking further Japanese lessons which culminates in a year long native study at a very strong arts university in Tokyo for my third university year (if all g es well, I sincerely hope... *glup*). So anyone always wanted to have a tour of Japan, consider booking a date with me soon! Which reminds me.... Songhai you owe me sth.! Better give them to me quickly cos I'll need them more than ever before. :> Btw, what happened to Xiufeng's RJ rendezvous?
Siwei - 05/13/00 15:41:25
My Email:sy.wei@cornell.edu
Hang in there, Jason.. =) You're leaving 17th, right? well... that's only 4 days more... then you'll be home again. =) are you flying alone, btw?
Jason - 05/13/00 00:32:46
2 down, 1 to go... can 'feel' Singapore already
but first, must survive the weekend. Never knew math can be so tough until last year
Struggling to get a decent grade now... sigh...

Happy Birthday to both Marvin and Yvonne here on the conv page. Well.. nice to see all of us turning adults oredi.. gives me a sense of foreboding and fear... goodness..turning old. Its great to meet so many old friends at Mama's chalet and also at Yvonne s place.. mmm.. makes me wonder how many are still there and how many have just become names and hi's and small talk... sigh.. depressing myself again..okie okie.. enough of this.. shall garner enough 'happy' energy to hop around a bit... When's Ops Nos M Tan?.. Grinz..
Wen - 05/06/00 15:02:11
Had a great time at Marvin's place (except that he crunched my ankle with a positively unprofessional foul). It's one of the few times I'll see him before he flies off for half a year, so there was the usual tearless farewells. Great big bunches of people are always hard to coordinate but Marvin's a pretty charming host, you guys should have seen him working the crowd.

Wah lao.... I just finished my last paper... then came to conversations and realised u all finished earlier than me! Bei4 pian4 liao.... Oh well, regarding the two parties, I'll definitely go for yvonne's, But dunno about marvin's cos Sat and Fri I can't make it and if u guys are going on those days, then i'll feel weird being the only one there on Sun. Anyway, the good thing is.... Sports Bash is postponed.... Hurray! That means I can turn up for at least one party. Hmm... so see how lah! Will confirm again! Take care
Weikai - 05/02/00 18:20:15
Oh ODAC got a mailing list ah? Didn't know that. Rescues by a Korean ship, wow man, we are really getting Hollywood. Actually, ODAC's getting more and more on the dangerous side. I don't know, I don't remember getting into serious troubles during our years and before. Maybe we were just lucky. Well, ODAC is supposed to be exposed to risks anyway, those wat calculated and uncalculated (jargons used by TAY). Just have a thought that ODAC may be steering towards self-banishment, given LEE FS's kiaseeness and responsibility. Hope not lar.... br> WARNING: Do not get yourself sick or injured and hospitalised these months; Attachment med students may be your SICKLE-MAN! Hehheh...you are making us worried Yvonne...hehhehheh....

Yah.. I second that.. (well.. actually .. can you second an idea you came up with? nevermind... I meant I second whatever it is that Theresa said..). We can do something more "exciting" in the late morning, and then move onto the picnic at wherever it is. . cause I figured it's easier to get moving this way, than the other way around.. if we start off with a picnic, I think we'll just never leave the place, knowing us.. =PP And then sometime during the picnic, we can do a gift exchange if we still want to do that. So when is this going to be? I remember last year when you guys met up on the very day that I came back. =PP Which gave me pretty much no sleep for almost three da s, cause I didn't manage to sleep on the plane.. =PP. And did you guys know that Mama is leaving for Cornell early? Around 22nd June (kiasu.. hee hee..) Anyway... how're we going to get this thing done before he leaves and after the UK people come back? W en are the UK people coming back, anyway? huh? huh? huh? reply leh.... =)
*sigh*... I'm bored cause I have three papers to do and I'm drawing a blank on them... I hate writing papers...
theresa - 05/01/00 03:55:19
Right. I accidentally clicked Submit in my random thoughts, before I could edit what i wrote. I thought such things happened only to other people.
I meant to say that these parks won't have much else for us to do (with the exception of East Coast). So we could have a picnic, and then move on to a nearby paintball or whatever we wanna do.
theresa - 05/01/00 03:46:56
I should be leaving in mid-June. I say a picnic is a great idea! We spend too much time in air-conditioned shopping lots and cinemas. Suggestions....Botanic Gardens (it's not boring, there are squirrels), Kallang Riverside Park (Good for sitting on green banks by a river in a central location), Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal (fir-like trees sitting down) and...East Coast I guess. But we can only have a picnic at these places, except east coast. We can always have the pinic near a whatever paint-thing. Or cano ing, we can go canoeing, at east coast.
Xinyan - 04/30/00 21:38:01
What, what, who's going where? Wat Berkelah? What Europe? Is that Roro thingy in Europe? Yeah Odacia was nice, wish I could have stayed longer. Girls, we must claim a sports as our own. I'm sick of soccer!

Harlow.... I'm going back at the end of May (ie 26th, I think... I think I'm game for anything.. er... except paintball.. well.. I wouldn't mind v much.. but it's just not something I'm dying to do, I guess. =) Location-wise... let's have it at Joshua's p ace.. so I can just walk there.. Hee hee.. (sorrie.. just kidding...=P) Does anyone want a picnic somewhere? We can have something in the day for a change... =P Like that we don't have to worry about finding a house for all of us to bum in and we don't ha e to worry about just sitting down on the floor at some shopping centre... I guess now that we're not schoolkids anymore, sprawling out on the floor in a shopping centre isn't such a cool idea.. =P
howie - 04/30/00 14:24:15
jason's coming back on the 21st rite? there's a trip that jer's leading to berkelah from the 23rd to the 25th that i am prob tagging along..so...
i tink between end of may and 6th of june is the only time we have left? Anyone cannot fit into the time schedule? holidays or vacations.? weikai, when's ur NZ thing?
suggestions to where and what to to do, have u guys heard of paintball? it's this urban combat game where teams of pple get to shoot little pellets of paint at each other....after that we can go for dinner or someone's place...Alan's still a good place.. PP....

Me and Josh should be at OBS from the 6th to the 26th of June, so if it's possible to plan around that it'll be nice. Theresa is going to NZ on industrial attachment "sometime in June". Activity-wise I'm fine with anything; location-wise maybe someone who hasn't volunteered before should, we can't always burden Alan you know :)

Once again ODAC has joined the time honoured tradition of arrow shooting... okay I'll be most happy to take up a degree of responsibility with regards to our annual get-together but will definitely need some kind of assistance from those who can be free a d are willing. Let's kick this off with a show of responses. Who is (1)free when? (foreign students read BACK IN S'PORE without major commitments such as attachments) (local Uni students read no camps/industrials/house/etc) (2) has any views on what to d where (RJ/ Chalet/ Alan's house/ some country club/ city area/Uni/ the beach/ NTUC resort), (free and easy/gift xchange/ karaoke??/ barbeque/ watch Jap VCDs/ Go laserquest) (3) Others (invite Mr Tay?/ souveniors/ go catered or pot luck)(4) can help out.. . Any opinion of remote relevance pls direct them to my email. We'll get a compilation done and decide over the net or some future gathering. How does that sound? Do reply soon though. Btw Songhai I still want your Japanese school materials (think I'll seriously need them soon)

Wen - 04/24/00 05:46:07
Let's see, who would be most free to organize the next Ops. Should be an ORDing guy.....that's Songhai, Chunda, Marvin, Huaquan, Haoyang. Now we should rule out local students since their orientation, school, etc start soon....that leaves only Chunda and arvin. Now we should rule out those starting overseas early in the summer term, and THAT leaves only.... CHUNDA! Aha! Not only by popular demand, but also by simple logic. How can you resist?

In the midst of my papers. One more paper tomorrow, then 3 more to go. Kinda fast huh, but it's damn stressful, super taxing. I walk around like a zombie everyday, so does everyone else.
By the way, no more BIG APPLE for me, but CUTE KIWI. Yeah, maybe coincidental, but I'll be going NZ (for hols, not exchange) this vacation. It's cheaper, and I think will be more worth it. Of course, the price isn't the main reason of change, have other private reasons as well. Anyway, it's LONG since I had a REAL BIG holiday abroad, so got to enjoy it man.

(One of those rare occasions I get to visit Conversations these days...) Actually just wanted to say hi and to state that I hope to meet up with all of you, especially those overseas people soon. After all I'm leaving around 30 August (finally... I am tru y excited!) so it's my personal wish to catch as many people I know in the flesh before I go. Sad as it seems, who knows when we will all actually get to meet again after this? Besides, we can also exchange contacts (my list is in a terrible mess right no ) which will definitely prove useful later on. Reading Haoyang's waitering experience made me thought of giving my two cent's worth: office work is not so cushy really and most of the time not so well paying at an hourly basis. Of course there are low-end tasks like paper boys and so forth but so too re there research/negotiation types which are actually quite stressful. For the social aspects, I feel that office relations are also challenging in the sense that you meet with the same people everyday and must learn to live with people's strengths and w ims. Anyway let's think about a mass occasion after university exams are over, kay? Take care and regards.
Wen - 04/18/00 08:05:56

No.. they legalised busking if the busker is affiliated with some performing art group or something. In other words, if you're an individual, your license application is not going to be approved.

That's coz there's an error in the coding for this page...but well...doesn't matter..just ignore it.. mmmm.. I thought they legalised busking in Singapore already...all you need is a police permit, which is quite easy to get... Just need to go down to the nearest station and apply... Remember TNP featuring an article on the legalisation a few years ago.

Hmm.. it was quite farnee that Xinyan's entry about the old man referred to wen's entry of so long ago that I was wondering what on earth she was talking about. But nevermind...
No... I don't think that there must be a complaint about this sort of thing before the police come along to round up these "streetside entertainers". Remember the guy in Orchard MRT who used to play the accordian and the harmonica? Well.. he's gotten roun ed up about 4 times the last I heard (which was in J2, I think...) And his accordian got confiscated too. TCS made a documentary on these people once. I think it was Tuesday repost (Xing1 Qi1 Er4 Te4 Xian3). They also featured the old man that Wen was tal ing about. Like I said.. yes it's sad. I can understand why the govt does not want to legalise it, but... I don't know... in a way it doesn't seem right to deprive these people of their livelihood either. Like the guy in Orchard is blind, right? There jus aren't too many other things that he can do. It's not really begging, since they're doing something for their money, so sometimes I don't see why they can't be left alone. I mean.. what really is the difference between the guy in Orchard MRT and a licens d performer who .. I dunno... performs at substation or something?

A bit like odac expediton, except without you guys around, trekking from 9 to 5 everyday, trying to map out the rock types(!) in the region, blah blah. ODAC t-shirts, collarpins and badges might also be on sale so bring along that extra $$... Feel free to come in any attire you wish but take into account that there will be games going on... Also, please let us know if you're bringing along your gf/bf, family, platoon, etc so that we can have a better estimate of the number of attendees. On a side note, Rafflesians Recall will take place on the 27th of May, so keep that date free... That's all for now... Have a happy day and hope to see you all on Sunday!

Hey, I'm not saying SBS will pay this one guy more specifically coz he caught some cheats, but that overall cheats cut SBS's revenue by perhaps 20%? so they cannot afford to pay all their drivers more.
Joshua - 03/31/00 18:05:56
Comments:
Wen, SBS or DelGro or whatever its name is ain't gonna be generous enuff to give this guy more money for nabbing the cheats. It's definitely like shoplifting to pay less than the stipulated fare. But employers like DelGro are not famous for being generous with employees. Maybe that's the reason some of them are so bad-tempered, from having to work long hours in sometimes stressful conditions for rather pathetic pay. Of course some ppl handle the stress better than others, so they ain't all cranky ol' basta ds. But if the drivers are pissed at anything it's more likely to be at SBS than a bunch of petty thieves.

About the contribution to the current batch thing, Xinyan, 27 people?...err...u forgot abt that alot of us are overseas? besides, i think we should find out what they really need first....hopefully, i can ask them when i go for the hike tomorrow...:)
odac now has a nice collarpin, thinking of ordering a piece each for all of us, wondering if u guys are game for the idea, we can distribute them in our next biggie, when u guys come back from overseas.... alrite..bye for now...
Wen - 03/31/00 16:00:52
Comments:
Hey Xinyan maybe the bus driver is fed up of kids who can afford branded clothes yet cheat all the time on 10 cents, which reduces the amount of money SBS earns, which reduces the amount of money he earns. Or maybe the cheating alone is enough to piss him off. It's no different from shoplifting at a store if you think about it. And Josh, it's not a life sentence, I can get parole after 4 years if I show good behaviour. At least I won't be in green no more.

I must say that I really regret making myself so busy and committed to so many things this semester.. I miss the times we had to play squash, to have an annual Alan's day, to go out for coffees and dinner at chomp chomp, to have little gatherings. To have Ops Nostalgia...To go Mr Tay's house for Christmas and New Year... Just to see you guys again.

Hee~~, somehow it's quite amusing to read other people's "irritated" entries, tho' I'm sure none of us were amused when we were irritated. Din know NTU and NUS students suffer at the hands of the same people, i.e. rude drivers and bad-attitude admin staff The scenarios Weikai that you described are like, really what happens to most of us here also. World class universities and world class public transport system my smelly foot!
There's this bus driver in NTU, he's quite famous here already, Wenyi I wonder if you've encountered him b4. I can't remember if I've told you people about him. Anyway, he's nicknamed the big bad wolf. Actually he's not rude or anything but he's really ov rzealous about his job. The moment you get on his bus, he will really turn around from his seat to look at which fare button you press. He does this at every bus stop, no joke. Either he's like really dutiful or very kuku. Then he actually remembers your ace? Every single one of his passengers. Then if you pass the bus stop where you are supposed to get down coz of the fare you paid, he will stop the bus, get off his seat, walk right up to you, ask for your ticket, and make you pay the correct fare all ov r again. Super memory man! And he's quite middle aged already I think.
The thing is, he's really polite about it. Not abusive but the whole time you are on his bus, you really feel like BIG BAD WOLF is watching. He really watches from his rearview mir or. So I always like to sit on the upper deck whenever I get on his bus. I've never seen him go up to ask for people to pay their fares....yet.
These drivers ah, I wonder, is it because they feel like they're failures elsewhere so they must feel like hey're king of the bus or something? Coz I think drivers always bully school kids, and I think they get a certain perverted sense of satisfaction from doing it to uni students. Like haha you're still students, and i can still terrorise you b4 you can look down on me next time or something. Admin staff also, mebbe they feel bullied by their graduate superiors, then they go and revenge themselves on the uni students, hahaha.

Oh, NOW you tell me it's pronounced yupyup. And I always thought that "Yapp" is just simply one "yup"-type sound. Or a silly typo.

I've been on blue slopes and a red slope before, but I think I was snow- ploughing more than skiing actually... And Siwei: thanks for defending(?) me. yup yup, more mature, not older!

Oh I uploaded a mp3 on this server, it's Shino Lam's Xin Dong. It's the theme song of the movie Tempting Hearts. So-so movie, but great song. If you're interested, it's here.
Exams coming in 1 month's time, the amount of time that I make myself start studying before exams. Think you guys will see less of me already, these days.

Howie: I think you really overrate bengs. What makes you think they have more "yi qi" or are better, character-wise, than non-bengs? The lack of pretensions is refreshing, but trappings aside, character has so little to do with bengness - after all that i only a matter of language and background, with sprinkling of coarseness? As for adjusting to the working world better....hah! With no paper, poor English, little technical/IT skills - good prospects? Unless you are talking about pseudo-bengs, educated pe ple who just prefer to behave like bengs, but I think you are talking about the true type yah? As opposed to Xinyan's B-Eng. Maybe you are more used to "yi qi" being discussed in Mandarin and Hokkien, that's all.

Same sentiments felt with irritating people. There are tonnes of people like that around. And yes, bus drivers ESPECIALLY. There was this one who accused I didn't pay the fare (using farecard) when I walked to the back of the bus. I walked to him again and showed him my ticket and farecard which I had yet to keep even. He was not apologetic, and said something like "buy ticket must show me mar" in a haughty tone. Yeah right. Next time I'll flash it right in your face. And there was once I had to certify true copies of my results slip. Went down to registrar's office, the lady at the counter was not too nice, and told me that I had to come back one week later cos the whole office will be too busy. But my deadline for scholarship application was near, so I emailed someone from the registrar's office and asked for help. This nice lady referred me to a Mdm Lee, whom I called. Mdm Lee was super defensive, and repeatedly said that certifying true copies is not her job. She sounded like I'm in the wrong, and was very accusing. I was damn xian by then, so i said ok ok, bye. She put down the receiver but didn't hang up, and I could hear what she said to her colleague in the background, which is like "these students, everything also look for me, like I'm very free". That did it. I was damn bueh song. So I replied to the nice lady I emailed, told her what happened, and asked her to reflect it to appropriate authority as a feedback, and not a complaint, which she did. The next day I went down to the office again, the same lady was there at the counter. I thought, oh shit, I'll have to do more explaining that my deadline is close. But to my surprise, she was damn nice! Said that she would certify for me, can collect the next day. Wow.....I even caught a tight squeezed smile on her straight face. I suppose complaining really works huh.
But I think making a scene isn't appropriate. For one, it's not worth you losing temper and grace and whatever for such people. Maybe just show a kind of frown, and walk off. Somehow that may have a deeper impact than an inconclusive squabble.
Jeremy, seems like all the good things happen to you huh. Made friends with profs, free food, etc etc.....who can ask for more?
Xinyan I finally got the kit chan CD. Listening to it now, well worth the bucks spent!
And I finally got my licence! Hole in 3. After 9 long months. Finally...........
Last thing, anyone (in s'pore) has a webcam to lend? Or anything similar, that can display real time video on laptop. I'll need that for my design presentation on this Friday. If you can spare, pls reply soon ok! Thanks.
Last last thing, Chris, wat's table top dancing?? Sounds "exotic" you know.

I wuz thinking about irritating ppl today. I was annoyed at a bus driver. Getting on a bus, I didn't ensure that he saw my bus pass. Most bus drivers don't give a damn about it. Anyway, he said in a really snotty tone, "excuse me?" so I showed him my stam and he was like, "show it to me, ah," in the same snotty tone. I hadn't slept for the whole night, was on a church nite hike so I was too tired to care. Anyway I was sitting at the back at the bus wondering if I should have bothered to raise my point, wh ch was that no one ever bothers to look at my bus stamp anyway, and I was feeling irritated at his tone. Thing is, I soon got pre-occupied with planning my day and evaluating the hike that there just wasn't time to be irritated with him. So it occurred t me that life's little irritations really aren't worth dwelling on. And they NEVER are. So if like me you're too tired to give a damn or you have other priorities, irritating morons aren't worth the time of day. But if you happen to be free and really hav nothing else better to do and the guy is really irritating, even after giving him the benefit of the doubt, I say let him have it. "Dammit your attitude sucks, what kinda service is this?" Then walk out without listening to his reply. Or since there's tw of you and one of him, say very loudly to your friend, "he's so ugly/such a jerk/got his fly undone then laugh heartily and stroll away. I say you must be able to walk away, else you run the risk of getting into an argument that will leave you feeling un atisfied and thirsting for blood. (or getting bashed up.) Yes Jeremy, stop sniggering, that stupid NUS bus driver was damn annoying for shutting the door in Theresa's face ok. (I seem to have poor relations with bus drivers.) I seldom make a scene, risky and can be counter-productive, but a well-timed scene can be really satisfying!:P At any rate, it's better than brooding about what I should have done and thinking up a million devastating retorts way too late.

Yep, I'm terribly irritated sometimes. Like today. Again. I was with a fren who was buying some fries from Long John Silver, when we met this really boliao waiter(?)(what do you call the people at the counter?). this is what happened. note:ISOB=Irritating son of a b
my fren:1 packet of fries
ISOB(in a cool bochup i-am-a-beng tone):what size? got small you know? and got large you know? what you want?
fren(irritated): small, takeaway
ISOB(in same tone, into the mike):1 small fries
kitchen helper couldn't hear properly, ISOB walks over to tell kitchen helper:small fries lah!
ISOB walks back to counter, speaks into the mike:repeat order, repeat order, 1 small fries
ISOB takes fries, gives to my fren
my fren:can i have more serviettes please?
ISOB: how many you want? 1? 2? 1 whole packet?
my fren, surprised: 2
I glare at ISOB
ISOB tosses (in a stylo i-am-bochup way) change back to my fren
we leave
tt's it. a five minute encounter. and my mood for the rest of the day gone. kept thinking what i should have done. really felt like bashing the guy's face in. but of course being a nice sweet girl i just think about it. keep thinking if my fren had been a beefy looking gangster with tattoos on his arms whether the ISOB will have the same sucky attitude.
Anyway, people, help! teach me how not to let things like tt affect my mood. I'm sick and tired of it!

After a whole week of conference attending, I can safely say that I am doomed to a life of not understanding what I'm studying. Like the Professor giving the talk said : "The topic that I'll be talking about is extremely similar and related to that given y Prof _______ in the previous talk. However, I must admit I did not understand a single thing of what he was talking about." Goodness. I have never seen so many Greek Alphabets in one place at one time. Group Theory, String Theory, M-Theory, Particle Phy ics, Graph Theory, Elliptics, Geometry, Manifolds, Quantum Mechanics, Quantum Cryptography, Markov Chains, Monte Carlo Simulations, Wavelets, Sparse Approximations. I'm fit to burst. The only glad thing is I've been eating like a king at Sheraton Hotel th s week with roast beef, sharks fin, suckling pig, pastries, etc etc etc. all for free. And on top of that, I expect to make about $400 for one weeks work of sleeping during lectures and eating during meals. And I made friends with profs in 4 overseas unis . hmm.. Maybe got chance to go to University Of Beijing for further studies... and I talked to Prof Lim Pin and his successor and found out that they dun really know their own university well. What else? I'm dead beat.
