Yes and I had to hear about the Vietnam trip from a Batch 15er. So embarrassing to have said "Huh? My batch going to Vietnam? I don't know anything about that." But anyway I think the trip would be great, enjoy and please take lots of photos, show us when you come back!
Alvin sorry for the upload bug, I believe Jason has fixed that for you. I'll fix the bug so that the file do not append. And that picture of Cornell is really beautiful, reminds me of that waterfall one that Jason took sometime ago.
I just went to Newcastle (the one in Australia, not UK), which is further west from Sydney, with some of my pals. Snapped some nice pictures too, please take a look at http://weikai.hypermart.net.

Eh Weikai or Jason... There seems to be a peculiarity with the file upload. I tried overwriting my old files, but ended up appending to them instead.... That's why some of my JPEGs are inflated. Could you delete Cornell, MyRoom, Parking, and StratfordShop.jpg? I'll upload replacements.

Or you could email to me the procedure for doing so? You know... Give a man a fish blah blah blah Thank you!

Wow... going to Vietnam =) The gang of us over here were talking about that as well! There're cheap tickets and its a good chance to see a country in transition. I was thinking of meeting my friend in China as well. Unfortunately, I've got OSMP and so I've gotta work my schedule around my attachment... when I finally get a posting.

It's a long backpacking trip huh? Leaves you lots of time to get up the mountain. 4000m is no joke. Yep, I miss trekking up hills as well! But am wondering if I'll ever fancy walking among the leeches and mozzies ever again. Maybe lah... if the group is good =) Tell us about your trip when you're (finally) back?

Personal online transactions are all about faith. You send him your ICQ password only when you get the $$ =)

HQ don't pretend. Not travelling's got nothing to do with being poor haha. My exams are over! 3 papers in 3 days. Amazing. Altogether only 7 hours, sheesh, less than one single subject (lit!) in the As. Life is good, eh.

Well, Jeremy, Joshua and I are going Vietnam on a backpacking trip, from the 4th to the 30th of May. Two ODAC juniors from Batch 15 are joing us - Binh (Vietnamese guy, hurray!) and Shiying. (Bossy noisy ex-chairwoman who reminds me of Sywei. hurray.) Also two of Shiying's friends (pair of twins from HCJC's Tahan whatever) are tagging along. Don't know if they are staying the whole trip, but some softie like Jery will prolly suffer from an attack of conscience if we dumped them along the way. If the motley crew sounds surprising, it's because me and jery met Shiying during this year's BTC. (Our 6th, amazingly enough. 6 consecutive BTCs...) Hence the assortment of Shiying-tagalongs. But Vietnam guy is a real gift. Translations! Free lodgings at Hanoi! Intros to dubious food! (Duck embryo? Cat and dog meat?) As for the twins I haven't got much to say about them so far. They look pretty....similar. Erm, and nice too I suppose.

We're going from South to North, flying in Saigon, flying out Hanoi. Along the way we hope to climb Fan Si Pan, Vietnam's tallest mountain at around 4000m I think. Wish us luck. At least we're old unfit people doing something instead of old unfit people rotting behind a comupter screen. ahaha.

My first backpacking trip, my first trip in a small group (not as small as originally envisioned), and my first trek for helluva long time. I'm looking forward to it. Kinda miss the old days.

Here's to good dog meat, not stepping on mines, beautiful photos, merciless taidi hands (okay it's not the hands...), and scorching wet summer days. Hopefully.

Joshua you owe me 300 pushups. ahahaha.

ok, another dirty joke. this one doesn't need any thinking:

A bus stops and two Italian men get on. They seat themselves, and engage in animated conversation. The lady sitting behind them ignores their conversation at first, but she listens in horror as one of the men says the following; "Emma come first. Den I come. Two asses, dey come together. I come again. Two asses, dey come together again. I come again and pee twice. Then I come once-a more." "You foul-mouthed swine," retorted the lady indignantly. "In this country we don't talk about our sex lives in public!" "Hey, coola down lady," said the man. "Imma just tellun my friend howa ta spella Mississippi."

Hey Thresa... did you experience any earthquakes in NZ? NZ is suposedly a hotspot for tectonic activity, albeit a relatively safe one. And skydiving is so fun =) I've never tried anything like that b4, not even bungee jumping. And what is it about Singaporeans that make them sound so angry? It'll be quite sad if we're stuck in bad attitude country, and can't go anywhere else 'cos of racism and xenophobia. My friends regularly complain about Sheffield, Leeds, and especially France. I haven't experienced anything really bad b4, so I won't really know how it feels to be on the receiving end. One can do without that kind of experience.

Yep XinYan... some pple are unreasonable and deserve abit of ticking off. But no need to go too far sometimes. We all already know you're a Singaporean =)

HY... you know, I also wanted to get thru my 1st yr exams in one piece. Now I only want to get thru my 2nd yr exam in one piece =)

Wow... where were the photos taken? They're nice =) Wen and Alan even dressed up for the occasion =) Hehe.... and HQ, I'm surprised you had time to think about HY's action-packed month, considering that your thoughts should be very occupied already =) Anyway, you only wrote a couple of lines and you call that rambling? Should refer to past entries for the standard length of a 'rambly' entry =)

Anyway, I'm happy, as we all are, that HQ had a fabulous b'day, and has someone special in his life (finally!) =) How we have waited long and hard for this day, and other neat stuff like that =) The first one (and perhaps last?) is always a special one... does anyone think so? I think it's important to choose your stead carefully, otherwise all you do is rack up your score, but with nothing really fulfililng to show for it.

And Yvonne... what you mentioned about the male n female perspective on love sounds reasonable. If I ever get caught cheating on my wife, I'll be sure to bring that up... "A long time ago, my friend Yvonne told me blah blah blah... ) Glad you're looking forward to your studies. It takes a special kind of person to be a doctor =) And the ODAC guys were never that bad! Right, guys?? =) Those with the bouquets rather than the stalks... good for them! Good for their florists too! =) When in Singapore, I only buy flowers from my florist in Orchard Road. Making nice bouquets is an art, and you'll definitely want someone you can rely on =) The recipe for everlasting happiness with your loved one includes lots of flowers... lots and lots... especially on wedding night =)

And I know why Penny wants to see more photos! =)
1>She's been studying hard and deserves a reward
2>It's unfair cos we all know how her boyfriend looks =)

I'll be trying to make edible WanTon noodles later =) The WanTon pastry skin here is thicker and tougher than the kind you get back home. Not as tasty but it's all we poor Londoners got =( I've got a friend coming over to join my household for dinner, and I was thinking of giving her a nice red tulip as a surprise =) But after reading the recent entries, seems like it's quite the norm after all, no?

And I save the best for last... My primary purpose for posting an entry was to suggest paying Mr Tay a visit when we're all back home. Any1 interested??? It'll be nice lor =) I haven't seen him for a couple of years... I only just missed him on Pulau Ubin last year during my 21 day OBS course... met Siew Boon that day though =)

well they say that for males... physical attraction is pretty dissociated with emotional attraction... ie... you can be physically attracted to one and yet feel no emotional attachment at all.... thats the excuse man give to their wifes when they've been found to be cheating on them.... and thats why they say that when a wife cheats on her husband its worse coz there is an emotional attachment she has with the guy and its not pure physical... satisfying of desires watever... oh well... not that i agree with this line of thought.... but there are some truth to it.... at least the female parts....
just saw for the first time a caesearean section last week... it was beautiful... at the beginning the OT was just so quiet n peaceful.... with a pregnant mother lying on the table with ehr big belly.... the doctor makes a quick cut at her lower abdomen... pierces the water bag.... which just bursts literally..... he reaches in and just pulls out this dusty grey baby..... a tiny little thing... who just starts crying.... n as it crys it just turns redder n redder till you are left with this lil pink baby.... it was sooo unreal... its so amazing that a living baby could be in that big belly.... and even more amazing when i look into a mirror and think about how ive grown from that dusty grey lii one lying on her mum's lap..... next june i'll be having to deliver babies with midwives assistance.... pretty scary.... but im looking forward to it.... it'll be quite an experience.....
thursday dinner n coffee was great.. haven't seen you guys for quite a while... n i really enjoyed myself so much.... hey the odac guys have changed... every single attached male that night was carrying a stalk or bouquet of flowers for their respective girlfriends.... its a sweet sight.....

hi there. Just to say that the physical attraction often comes about as a result of emotional attraction. You don't go about lusting after people on the mrt right? Or okay, say if you do, the lust there is short-lived, while that which you wish to satisfy with your partner is something totally different, it reinforces your emotional attachment. So weikai, even with physically unattractive people, i'm sure they are very physically attracted to each other, since they are emotionally close. ie, going back to xinyan's statement, sometimes lust is a result. And about the different loves, you don't yearn to share ideals and dreams with your mum right?
skydiving (no relation whatsoever ): I did a tandem one. Was really scared, cos I don't like the feeling of free-fall. The worst part was just before jumping out of the plane, I saw the huge expanse of land and lake 12000 feet below and wondered why on earth I was doing this. But after you jump the wind is rushing past so fast you felt suspended by it. During the initial first 15 seconds (of free-fall) everything is moving really fast, then the parachute opens and you float slowly down and feel really high. There's this amazing spread below you and the sun shining on it. Yes it was steep but I figured it's something I wanted to do especially since I was so scared. Also, it's cheaper there than in other places. And the last reason was I thought I might get wimpier as I grew. So, no time like the present.
xinyan: yes i was speaking about nz. Was referring to the earlier entries where a few peope were saying that new places aren't as great as they sound. That's how I felt at first too, especially with homesickness, but after time and adapting to it the beauty of the place and people really got me. It's far less stressful and the people there take pleasure in simple things. The first week I came back I was wondering why everyone was so angry.
About the language, i don't think it was a matter of being offended at all. =)

A little sidetrack here:
When you have legs, you tend to appreciate life a little less than those without. Ever noticed that people born without legs are much stronger people, they never give up.
So PA sometimes may make you take things for granted and miss the beautiful sides of EA and love......if you know what I mean.

I'm not saying definitely or all the time, but yeah, sometimes it happens.

Weikai

Yes most of the time love comprises of emotional and physical attraction. But what I'm saying is I believe love still stands as love with only emotional attraction. Let's say emotional attraction = EA and physical attraction = PA. Thus Love = EA + PA. But it is possible that Love = EA. Not that much that Love = PA alone. If it's just PA then it's not love, it's crush, lust, craving, whatever.
Wen, the way I love my mum, yes, is different from loving Denise, but lust is only a small part of the difference. It's a different care, different feeling, different standpoint. The former is from a son who wants to take care of her through her old age and to show his gratitude to her unselfish love. The latter is from a man who wants to provide for her and care for her just because of that emotional connection. PA comes in through crevices here and there.

Yes given a choice everyone would love legs. I'm just saying you can survive without them. If PA is so essential a part of love, I don't see how ugly (very ugly) people can get attached and all..... EA is the one that dominates in their cases.

Idealistic? Maybe...but I'm trying to veer slightly off the conventional course of love and bring up the minority but more romantic side of it, which I think, exists.

Sure, love can exist without lust! But is it romantic love of the sort we're talking about, that is the question...

gonna give my 2 cents worth about this love vs lust thingy. am for the view that lust is an integral part of love. as a fren of mine in CS put it very nicely... Love comprises of 2 parts. tt of emotional attraction and physical attraction. Love cannot be if these 2 elements are not present. if u love someone for his/her character, personality, compatibility with u and there is no physical attraction... u wld haf a really strange relationship. putting it another way... love wldnt be wat it is if u didnt feel any physical attraction, cuz its part of the loving, the showing of affection. i wld gladly choose life with legs than w/o any day noe... =P

I don't have in depth opinions to voice, but somehow, I think it all depends on the individual and situation. Tho most of the time, lust is inherent in love like Wen said, but I think there can be love without lust.

It's a bit like, we're born with legs, but we can survive without legs. It just takes a genuine will to survive, just like the genuine intention to love. Lust is just something that comes along with it.

Howie: If I'm reading you right you mean to say that lust and love are separate issues? That you can have lust with love, or lust without love - in 2 versions, fulfilled and unfulfilled. Lust is inherent in the individual, love one of the possible consequences.

My take is that lust is inherent in the love.

Simply put: If lust and romantic love are such easily compartmentalized issues, why not love one person and lust after another? Have a relationship with someone and pack your unfulfilled lust to the afore-mentioned sex worker? If this goes against the concept of love, then clearly lust (monogamous variety) is an integral part of love.

It's somewhat of a distasteful thought to some that something as reviled as simple animal lust is so core a part of love but I think that is only due to an undeserved bad-rap on the part of lust.

I mean, it's built-in, can't change it, might as well enjoy it.

Of course, I mean the monogamous variety, not the commercial one. ahaha.

I think Gramps would've given everyone a earful for their bad language if she went for NS. Good thing you didn't take up one of those scholarships, eh.

Since MAN (no gender specifics here) is essentially sexual in nature, lust exists in all of us whether we like it or not. Lust is not necessarily always the precursor to love, but granted, it is not a bad one either. Because lust, when controlled and channelled towards the right people (not sez-service providers) is probably the most primal and understated force that drives a person towards another member of the opposite (or same for that matter) sex, we cannot deny it's efficacy in certain situations that may exist.

Love then, is one of the many possible outcomes that may occur as you actualise that lust. One of the other outcomes is that you may actually consummate that lust and simply have a f***ing good time. Period. But this would require an adequate level of lust on the other person's part too. OR you can always have that f***ing good time and still have love.

Be mindful of the last and most extreme consequence when you have unbridled, uncontrolled lust that is also, unfortunately unconsummated simply because the other person thinks you are a loser.
In such instances, you do not have even the sniffle of a possibility of that f***ing good time...but you can also kiss the possibility of love goodbye. In such cases, you mostly end up with a big f***ing pile of shit and really...it's just time you packed up your lust and moved elsewhere.

He means that if he only gets the shot glasses from the places that he visits, he can only get that many, but if he asks everyone to get one for him, he'll be buying alot more, so it's more expensive. Basically trying to curb his spending, I guess. =P

I think lust is part (large or small will depend) of love, thus love encompasses more. And attraction not equals lust.
Hey Alvin, I don't understand why it is less manageable and more expensive if I get the Sydney ones for you since I'm in Sydney anyway. But well, I'm not complaining.
And yes, sorry for the repetition, but I'll be back in Singapore soon. HAPPY!

If you were born in the 40s then you'd be freaky old by now. Not to mention being born in the war years might be detrimental to your health. Poor nutrition might prevent you from reaching your full adult height.

Anyway if lust was the reason for love I think commercial sex is hell of a more trouble-free way to satisfy it. What, all that trouble, just for lust???

And well I would have preferred to be borned in the '40s, then I would have been in my 30s in the '70s, when the feminist movement was at its peak. Now it's just a whole lot of mess.

Oh by the way, Hq:

I don't see the whole "in this day and age" point. Everyone and their mum harks back to this supposed golden age where life was simple and peaceful and beautiful. I don't know what time they are talking about, exactly. I mean, Adam and Eve were the only two people in the world and STILL they screwed it up.

I don't think education, love, politics, movies, tv, reading habits, or whatever were significantly better in the past.

But anyway, you've got problems of your own so...

To say that love is lust seems simplistic. I think lust is a necessary but not sufficient condition of romantic love.

Okay take a breather from the love love issues. Got a dirty joke here that I find quite funny. The batch pervert still hasn't change a bit. Take it with a pinch of salt!

One day the president of a company calls in Dave, the vice-president. He
says, "Dave, you have to lay off either Jack or Nicole." Dave says Jack has
three kids and Nicole is his best worker, but the boss will hear none of it.

So the next day Dave sits waiting for Jack and Nicole to show up for work.
Nicole gets there first, and Dave says, "Look, I have a problem. I either
have to lay you or Jack off."

"Well, Dave," Nicole says, "You'd better jack off, because I have a
headache."

By the way I will be back in Singapore from 12 April to 21 April! Visa renewal...

What is Love? This qn has been on my mind since the moment I got attached. Does the concept of Love haf to be the same between 2 pple for them to be together? How different cld it possibly be? is there such thing as a self-centered version? is there a selfless version? In our day and age... is there such thing as true love? or are we all joining together simply for the sake of companionship? When u truly love someone, doesnt tt someone have to have ur complete trust? does loving someone mean simply caring for that person? wanting to be with tt person? wanting the best for tt person? wanting to share ur life with that person? wanting tt person to be happy? and if it were all of the above? wat happens when these wants get in the way of each other? which 'want' do we choose then? sorrie for the rambling... juz in a terrible state of mind now...

This may be a little overdue, just got to say some stuffs to HQ:
Isn't falling in love quite an experience? I'm not talking about crushes or puppy love but real heart-felt love (and you'll know it is when you've felt it). I don't think anyone ever had an easy time going through the period of falling in love, despite displaying bliss and happiness. It isn't easy to balance time between a certain beloved individual and groups of treasured friends, I am still having problems with that (but there have been improvements). But if your friends do understand you, no one will blame you. You just got to be answerable to yourself. So, no worries HQ, just know what you want, and go for it. Your friends here will support you whole-heartedly.

Alvin you collect Hard Rock shot glasses? You want Sydney ones? Can get for you =)

Ho no it doesn't sound stupid cos I only found out a while ago too. There is this shareware called Documents-To-Go which allows you to export word and excel files into mini-word and mini-excel in your palm. But because they are 'minis' so full functionality is not there, but at least u get to do basic editting and viewing.

If you just want to view text files as docs in your palm, get PalmDocs. Basically it sits in Microsoft Word, and when you activate it will convert the document into pdb. Then you can use any palm doc viewer to read it (eg CSpotRun). Third alternatively would be WordSmith which I have yet to try. Try searching for them at www.palmgear.com

Hiya! My trip was great! Had so much fun and saw so many things... and managed to visit 4 Hard Rock Cafes as well! =) Hehe so happie... I figured that since I'm travelling ard so much, might as well start collecting all the Hard Rock Cafe shot glasses =) I've got abt 10 so far, and looking forward to many more! Too bad I didn't get the one from BeiJing during Sec3. Would have made quite a nice addition!

Oh, SyWei was very nice too! =) She lets me disturb her anytime =) So sweet huh? Cornell's very own girl-next-door =) I was so excited to be driving all the way to Niagara Falls and back from Ithaca.... The rented car was a very pretty looking silver and drove beautifully on the highways. Traffic was light and I was cruising at like 140kph =) Would have been nice to have had some company though, but everyone was busy studying so better not distract them too much =) Niagara Falls was absolutely breathtaking. Will post some pics when they're developed =) There're 2 Hard Rock Cafes there on each side of the border. Must be the 2 nearest Hard Rock Cafes in the world, separated only by the Niagara Falls.

Oh ya, I like the new title bar. Very artistic no?

HQ is trying very hard issit? That's good lah =) I alwiz say that girlfriends are a good investment =) How many of you have heard that line from me? =) So HY... have you caught someone's eye as well?? That's great then =) The chase is as, if not more fun than having a girlfriend okie... so dun worrie if things go too slowly or something =) Gotta run now... byez!

Having to open up completely is sth that i have never done before... sth tt i had never been confronted with b4. Guess this seems terribly out of place among all the talk of the overseas pple... but i juz felt like writing... =P Am still in the midst of finding the balance between life together with her and having my own life... I had never had to communicate exactly wat i felt and tot to anyone, and itz been and still is really difficult for me. Never before had i known juz how impt non-verbal communication is ... and how easily it can be mis-interpreted. Never before had I had to be so clear on wat I want, and be putting that into actions. Never before had i felt so not in control of things, of myself, of wat i decide, wat i do, of someone. But I am CERTAIN of one thing... and tt all this is worth every bit of effort i'm putting into it and every moment i spent trying to find tt middle ground to making things work out. Will always be glad for my friends with me during this time. Just hope that u all understand that this is a big part of my life and juz bcus i put the amount of weightage i do on it doesnt mean I'm forgetting everything else in my life... =P

You guys should have received emails from her before cos she mails indiscriminately to the odac mailing list very often. That was how I knew she is in Sydney too, which is a blessing actually. At least I'm not that alone anymore. Anyways I took some photos and vids last night, you may want to check it out.
