Mount Sherman

Sherman summit top right corner

The 45th highest at 14,036ft.

My 16th successful fourteener climb!

8/22/98 climbed with Scott J.

The end of July I had successfully climbed Long's Peak and Wilson Peak (weather forced us not to climb Mount Wilson and El Diente). I felt my summer was complete. But Scott came out to visit in August (from sea level) and wanted to try a fourteener. I felt that Sherman was probably a good mountain for someone in his condition. We left Colorado Springs at 5:00 a.m. ( a traditional departure time for mountains in view from Buena Vista) and arrived around 7:00. The very last part of the drive was a little rough for my Saturn but it made it! We started off on a very wide trail but missed the part of the trail we wanted. Hilltop MineThere are two ways to go, we had to backtrack to find the one we wanted. We had a nice view of "Hilltop Mine" (left) and admired it with many other hikers (Weekends are bad times to climb easy fourteeners!) We climbed up to the Sheridan/Sherman Saddle and then had the toughest part of the climb. We made it up to what I thought would be the top of Sherman but then walked on an almost flat path for about a quarter mile to the "top". We "summited" around 10:00. We couldn't sign in because the register wasScott and I on summit of Sherman full. Plus there were 50 people up on top. A large boyscout troop and I thought I saw one with crutches. Crestone peak felt crowded with 3 people but we had room for about 300 on top of Sherman. Two guys were playing frisbee and they weren't in anyone's way. I was a little disappointed because when I climb a mountain I like to get away from the crowds in the city and just hear the sounds of nature. Scott was happy that he got to the top of his first fourteener. The hike down was pretty uneventful. We went down the same way we came up. Driving out we were almost hit by a sports car speeding around a turn on the dirt road. We made it home around 2:00.
