More of BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK

One of the first things to do upon arriving at Big Bend is to take the quick hike to "The Window". It's less than a half-mile from the trailhead, round trip. Through the opening in the rocks, you look down off of a cliff onto the desert floor, and out at the mountains in the distance. It is especially beautiful late in the afternoon, which was when I shot this photo.

There are three canyons along the Rio Grande in Big Bend, Santa Elena (shown here), Mariscal, and Boquillas.
Santa Elena is on the western edge of the park. These walls are about 1,500 ft. high. That's about right for the other canyons as well. Mariscal is near the southern tip of the park, and Boquillas is on the eastern side.

This view is from inside Santa Elena Canyon. This is as far as I could get on foot. The walls rise right out of the water, and you have to have a boat to continue up river. There are outfitters in Lajitas, a small town on the river, which will take you rafting through here.
