We engineer our outerwear to provide protection and comfort in cold and inclement conditions. We design to accommodate the range of motion required to climb snow and ice, ski cross-country and hike steep trails. We design to adapt to varying conditions and situations, taking into account the unpredictability of the weather and the fact that some outdoor activities alternate periods of extreme exertion with total rest, requiring a proper balance between ventilation and insulation. Some North Face outerwear is engineered to shut out rain completely and ventilate quickly, while other garments are designed to work with midlayers to protect against prolonged exposure to severe winter conditions. All North Face outerwear is made with the most technically advanced materials and built to last a lifetime.

The Ak-Su Range
Kitty Calhoun - Grissom
Mentally and physically, the Ak-Su Expedition was unlike any expedition I have ever been on -- for one reason, because I was four-months pregnant. I had doubts about climbing while pregnant in a remote area of a less-developed country. Would my baby rebel if our diet consisted mainly of Russian speck (lard) and cabbage? Would I outgrow my climbing clothes during the month-long trip? I wanted to climb and explore my potential but not at the expense of my climbing partner. Climbing the Russian Tower with Jay Smith gave me a new awareness of my potential. Not only that, my baby is already an international traveler with three big wall climbs under his belt.
