PIN@Y COMMUNITY VENTURE TO TRAIN LEADERS OF TOMORROW
Cross-generational Leaders Experience the Movement

SAN JOSE, California, July 9, 2001 - Pin@Y Community Venture, a newly formed task force of select leaders from the Pilipino community, extends an invitation to all community and youth organizers and leaders to the first ever Pin@y Youth Organizers Summit to be held on August 2-4, 2001 at the San Jose State University campus. Experience the Movement
The three-day summit focuses on up-and-coming organizers already working in the community by providing innovative and interactive leadership training on topics including: community organizing, grants and funding, community apathy, burn-out prevention, and the artistry of activism.

"Leaders in our community know what the issues are and have taken steps to find solutions to community issues. Some of our new leaders just don't know how to 'get down to business" said Tony Santa Ana, Co-founder of the Pin@y Community Venture. "The Pin@y Youth Organizers Summit is where new leaders in the community can 'get down to business.' We invite all leaders to "experience the movement provide each of us with the spirit of inspiration and re-inspiration to go-back and mobilize our communities."

About Pin@y Community Venture: Experience the Movement
Pin@y Community Venture, read "Pinay/Pinoy Community Venture," the organization of community leaders came together to enhance the community consciousness of the Pilipino community. The symbol "@" represents the combination of "a" from "Pinay" or female Pilipina, and "o" from "Pinoy" or male Pilipino. As a symbol of technology and progress, this Pin@y Generation inspires collective action for personal growth and social transformation.

About Our Sponsors
Akbayan, the Filipino Student Organization of San Jose State University was founded in 1976 to promote Pilipino pride within the student's community. Akbayan hosts several meetings and workshops each year to expose members to the richness of the Pilipino culture, ideals, and politics. Akbayan members also serve as mentors at Sheppard Middle School and
volunteers at the Northside Community Center.

Filipinos for Affirmative Action (FAA)
, a United Way Agency, serves a million and a half Filipinos in the United States, and the 50,000 new immigrants each year with such issues as employment discrimination, immigration restrictions, political empowerment, and quality education. FAA also assists in the community's efforts to find solutions to the problems caused by discrimination and intolerance.

The Filipino Youth Coalition (FYC) is a non-profit organization comprised of young people, who range from middle school to college, and young professionals. They help foster pride within the city of San Jose, particularly within the Filipino Community. Started in the summer of 1992 to build and strengthen the community, FYC offers active programs in on-going projects that celebrate the Filipino heritage. FYC is unique in that the youth are the innovators and initiators of the community events. Their true
love for the people and community at large is what makes the youth the leaders of today.

The Northside Community Center in San Jose provides direct intergenerational services to seniors, families, and youth. The mission of the Filipino American Opportunities Development Council (Northside's parent organization) is to build healthier and stronger Filipino families.
