Honour the Skraels

by Katherine Ashewode

The Barony of Skraeling Althing shares a border with my home group, the Barony of the Island of the Sleeping Dragon. For years, we have had an ongoing border dispute with them, culminating in a yearly rapier tournament. While we tend to occasionally insult each other (all in good fun!), I thought it was important, once the fighting is over and the grog flows, to honour our noble opponents. That is the reason for this song. The tun is original.

What is a battle with only one army?
What is a struggle with no one to fight?
What is a conflict with no contestation?
An army can't skirmish with no one in sight!

And so I say honour the Skraels!
Let's drink to the health of the Skraels!
Without them, we're useless,
A pain, and a nuisance.
To the foemen who meet us each year in the Eric,
Let's drink to the health of the Skraels!

How can you fight 'gaist a man with no honour?
How can you strive 'gaist a cowardly mob?
How can you challenge a foe who won't answer?
To fight you need enemies stalwart and strong!

And so I say honour the Skraels!
Let's drink to the health of the Skraels!
In battle they're fearless,
Their courage is peerless.
To the foemen who never shied back from a battle,
Let's drink to the health of the Skraels!

Where is the challenge in slaying a weakling?
Where is the pride when you slaughter a sheep?
Where is the pleasure in besting an anthill?
The challengers need to be able and fleet!

And so I say honour the Skraels!
Let's drink to the health of the Skraels!
They're tempered and tested,
Their skill is impressive!
To the foemen who make us work hard for each war point,
Let's drink to the health of the Skraels!
