A John Coltrane Discography

By Bret Primack

Discographers Note: This discography, which includes more than one hundred and fifty recordings, is by no means the definitive catalogue of John Coltrane's incredible body of work. But, aside from numerous bootleg recordings of live sessions (some of which are included here) this listing does include almost everything Coltrane has been known to record.

At this writing, on the sixty ninth anniversary of John Coltrane's birth and nearly twenty nine years after his death, new material continues to surface. In this case, STELLAR REGIONS, a previously unreleased session, recorded just five months before his death.

Wherever possible, the catalogue number of Coltrane's recordings currently in print is included. Information about live recordings many of which have been released unauthorized is also included, but without catalogue numbers because of the changing fates of these releases.

Note: Undeniably one of the best small bands in the history of Jazz, the Miles Davis Quintet of the mid-1950s made history at Cafe Bohemia on Manhattan's Barrow Street and in Rudy Van Gelder's New Jersey for Prestige Records. Two marathon studio sessions by the group resulted in a total of four LPs, stylized after the sets at Cafe Bohemia, producing music of high energy and immediacy. Of Miles Davis' many bands, none was more influential and popular than the quintet with John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones. The searching, restless improvisations of Coltrane intrigued listeners who had a taste for adventure. The flawless rhythm section became a model for bands everywhere.

Dakar - **Mary's Blues - Route 4 - Watches' Pit - Velvet Scene - Cat Walk

Note: In the spring of 1957, John Coltrane went through two years of artistic growth so concentrated it even astonished the Jazz world, where compressed musical development is far from unknown. As the other horn in the Miles Davis Quintet, Coltrane had moved from virtual obscurity to acclaim as the tenor saxophone innovator of the decade. Although major stylistic departures were to come, Coltrane was at the peak of the probing lyricism and strength of his middle period. With the interestingly contrasted baritone saxophonists Cecil Payne and Pepper Adams, and a rhythm section of great smoothness and swing, DAKAR is a gem in the Coltrane discography.

Note: The recordings John Coltrane made for Prestige, both with and without Miles Davis, helped establish his first substantial foothold in the Jazz world. He showed that he could play the blues; and whether he was treating a ballad at the usual tempo or taking one upstairs, he combined thought and emotion in a completely individual manner. The Garland trio, itself a recording entity for the label, was a strong unit that was sensitive to Trane's musical attitudes.

Note: SOULTRANE continued the reinforcement of Trane's importance as a stylist. As in COLTRANE and JOHN COLTRANE WITH THE RED GARLAND TRIO, his first two albums as a leader for Prestige, the material in SOULTRANE is far from the ordinary. The Garland-Paul Chambers-Art Taylor rhythm section is a perfect accompanying unit for Trane who, by this time, was acknowledged to be--along with Sonny Rollins--one of the two most influential tenor saxphonists in Jazz.

Personnel:
*Red Garland, p - John Coltrane, ts - Paul Chambers, b - Jimmy Cobb, d

Song list:
Rise 'n Shine - I See Your Face Before Me - If There Is Someone - Lovelier Than You - Little Melonae - **By The Numbers

Note: Coltrane does not do the old Dexter Gordon/Leo Parker duet number, "Settin' the Pace," in this set. The overall title merely refers to his preemininence in the Jazz world at the time the recording was released in the early sixties. Recorded in 1958, this session comes from a time when Trane had already played in the Miles Davis Quintet and the Thelonious Monk Quartet and was frequenting Rudy Van Gelder's New Jersey studio in recording situations backed by the Red Garland Trio. This threesome--Garland, Paul Chambers and Arthur Taylor--was a Prestige entity on its own, but had already released such albums with Coltrane as TRANEING IN and SOULTRANE. SETTIN' THE PACE, with its heady combination of seldom-done pop material and Jackie McLean's intriguing "Little Melonae," continued the excellent quartet series at a time when Trane was making Jazz history at the head of yet another powerful foursome.

Note: There are only three numbers on this release: the title song "Black Pearls," an extremely swift version of "Lover Come Back To Me," and the fast "Sweet Sapphire Blues," which begins with the Garland soloing from the gitgo in a long, up-beat exploration before Trane unfurls his "sheets of sound." Byrd getss into that rapid-fire mode, in and among his more evenly cadenced lines, and Chambers (plucked) and Taylor (brushes into sticks) solo before Garland ends with a riff credited to Prestige's then-president, Bob Weinstock.
