Chichiri

Chichiri is a wise monk with special powers. He is one of the

most powerful suzaku seishis. He can transport himself and others

to safety easily, by using his cloak (kesa). He can even hide snugly in his straw hat (kasa)!

He first meets Miaka in the third manga. At that time, he had sensed danger

in the forest, and pulled Miaka to safety, then hid back in his hat... -.-;;

Chichiri's true face is hidden by a scar in his left eye. The scar is a constant

reminder of his sad past, and he refuses to heal it, even if it was possible.

However, as his scar was not pleasing to the eye for others,

he was forced to wear a mask, which wears a happy face forever.

How did Chichiri actually get scarred? What actually happened?

When Chichiri was young, about the age of eighteen and known as Ri Houjun then,

he loved a girl named Kouran, and was about to marry her. However, unknown to Houjun,

his best friend, Hikou, seemed to also have fallen in love with Kouran.

One day, Hikou expressed his feelings to Kouran, and kissed her.

Unfortunately, Houjun witnessed it... Later, she told Houjun that she could not marry him.

As she was a decent girl, she felt that once she was kissed by someone else,

she was not worthy for Houjun. Houjun, young and rash, confronted

Hikou. The two fought through a storm, which had flooded the area.

Hikou slipped and fell into a body of choppy water. Houjun caught Hikou's wrist.

'Save me, Houjun' Hikou pleaded.

Just then a log floated up to Houjun and pierced his left eye. The pain

caused Houjun to let go of Hikou's wrist. Hence the scar.

During the flood, many lives were lost, and it was during that

particular flood that Houjun lost not only his best friend,

but also the girl he loved.
