Hiccups

Repeated, noisy intakes of air-hiccups- are caused by involuntary contractions of the diaphragm. Hiccuping attacks generally do not last more than a few minutes and are usually only a minor irritation to the sufferer.

SYMPTOMS
- Frequent noisy intakes of air.

AIM
Break up the sequence of contractions and seek medical help if attack is prolonged.

TREATMENT
1. Ask the casualty to sit quietly and hold her breath, or give her a long drinks.
2. If it is unsuccessful, place a paper (not plastic!) bag over the casualty's mouth and nose, and ask her to breathe in and out.
3. If hiccups persist for more than a few hours, seek medical aids.
