more pictures page

This page is just a collection of locomotive and other rail photos taken on a few trips with the family. The quality of some photos is not that great, but I had to make do with a not too great camera.

I hope to update this page soon with more photos and descriptions. In the meantime, enjoy.

Tunnel  Inside tunnel  Silly sign

The three pictures above show a tunnel on the Pretoria - Pietersburg mainline that is unknown to many people. This is due to the fact that almost all passengers traveling from Pretoria or Pietersburg are normally asleep when the trains reach the tunnel. The tunnel is situated between Warmbaths and Nylstroom. The last picture is of a sign that makes no sense to me and is quite funny if you think about it. It is in Afrikaans and a bit faint in the picture but a direct translation mean that the railway line itself must not be moved as the  line is aligned with the overhead power line. I should think it must be the other way round seeing that the line was only electrified long after 1965 when the tunnel was built.

Pretoria station  Station concourse

The two pictures above show the Pretoria train station. The building was renovated some time ago but needed to be restored over the last couple of months as it was gutted by a fire. Disgruntled commuters set the building on fire after trains were delayed because of a gas leak at a nearby industrial site. The second picture is of the concourse that leads to the platforms.

Derailed train

The picture above show a derailed 7E electric unit. The accident happened between Nylstroom and Naboomspruit in Limpopo on Tuesday the 20th of May 2003. A truck carrying steel beams overshot a T - junction and ended up on the rails in front of the oncoming train. The unit and nine wagons derailed spilling slag and landed on top of the truck after the collision, trapping the driver and passenger in the truck. Fortunately they escaped with a few scrapes, bruises and one broken leg. The accident caused serious delays on the mainline between Johannesburg and Messina. Damage caused is estimated to reach in the millions of rands. Photo was scanned courtesy of a local newspaper.
