My Rovos Rail Photo Page
This page is a collection of photos taken at Rovos Rail, a private company that run luxury steam trains in the Southern Africa region.
Rovos Rail operates from the old Capital Park Diesel and Steam loco, Pretoria, South Africa. The buildings utilised are renovated South African Railway buildings (I started my Induction course in these same buildings when I joined the SA Railways back in 1987). The pictures above show the entrance to the Rovos Rail HQ, Brenda a class 19D steam locomotive, and the station building used. Rovos Rail caters for the steam enthusiast that want to have a luxurious experience while experiencing the thrill of steam.
Unfortunately, on the day of the shoot, only one locomotive and train was available. As it was being readied for departure to Victoria Falls, we were not allowed to take pictures inside the carriages. We did manage though to get a few good ones of the locomotive.
The picture above show the number 2701 and the class of the locomotive, which is a 19D. The manufacturer's plate states that this locomotive was built in 1938.
Below are pictures of the open firebox, a view of the locomotive and the closed firebox.
The series of pictures below show the carefully and beautifully restored gauges of Brenda and the coalfeed behind the footplate.
As the pictures above show, the assistant and the engineer were more than willing to have their pictures taken. The last picture show the dark green color scheme that is used by Rovos Rail.
The pictures below show the "Pride of Africa" flash on the nose of the locomotive and another view of the locomotive itself.
The pictures above show the locomotive blowing off steam (a special favor by the engineer) and the restored copper valves in the cab.
The pictures above show the train approaching as it was leaving the station at Capital Park. The first picture of the carriages, (these were taken as the train whizzed past), is a sleeping car, the second the restaurant car and the last the viewing car at the back of the train. Rovos Rail had to get special permission from Spoornet to have this open car running at the back of the train.
