Y'see, a while ago in my email program I had this silly ASCII .sig file of a zebra, approximately as artistic as my ClarisWorks picture on the main page, which has thankfully since been lost. (Don't be relieved yet; if I ever find it again I'll be sure to inflict it on you.)
Several years later: So I was going through all my ancient floppy disks (remember those things we had last century?) and what did I find but my old .sig file:
__/\ /__/ \___________ \/ \ \ \ \ \ \|\ \/_\_\_\_\/_// \ | | | |(Okay, so it's not a good zebra.)
Anyway, so I had this silly ASCII .sig file. And I made the mistake of sending an email to my father, and he saw the .sig file, and just couldn't resist making a silly joke:
____________ __/ / / / / / /\_ _/<<\ \ \ \ \ \ \/ \ --------------------------- "Dead Zebra" by Dad
Understandably distressed, I replied: "No, no, it's just sleeping!"
So Dad modified the picture:
_________ | Zzzzzzz | |________ | ____________ \| __/ / / / / / /\_ _/<<\ \ \ \ \ \ \/ \ --------------------------- "Sleeping Zebra" by Dad
So I gave in and joined the game. The above picture suggested, to my somewhat sick mind (I inherited it from Dad, of course) certain simple modifications:
____________ --------__/ / / / / / /\_------ / / /_/<<\ \ \ \ \ \ \/ \ / / ------------------------------- "Zebra about to get run over by a train" by Zeborah
Dad added the inevitable:
_ _|_ | |/| |\| | | "Train coming for zebra" by dad | | ___| \ |\ |-|\\-------------- / |\\\ / / / / / / -------------------
I combined the two pictures to make:
_ _|_ | |/| |\| | | "Zebra and train about to collide" by dad and Zeborah | | ___| \ |\ ____________ |-|\\---------------------__/ / / / / / /\_-------------------- / |\\\ / / / / / / / / /_/<<\ \ \ \ \ \ \/ \ / / / / / / / / / ----------------------------------------------------------------
And Dad thoughtfully saw fit to prevent the impending disaster:
_ _|_ | |/| |\| | "Sleeping Zebra Saved!" by dad | | ------------------------------- | / \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ ___| / --- ----------------------- --- \ \ |\ / --- / ____________ \ --- \ |-|\\---------- --- / __/ / / / / / /\_ \ --- ---------- / |\\\ / / / / / \ / _/<<\ \ \ \ \ \ \/ \ \ / / / / / / --------------------- --------------
Somewhere along the line, I had floppy disk problems. (Nothing's changed. For several months in 2000 I was running off an external hard disk because the internal one stopped spinning and no-one in New Caledonia could retrieve the data.) Anyway, I drew a rather bitter (albeit simple):
___ / _ \ | |_| | \___/ "Dead Disk in a trashcan" by Zeborah
And, predictably weird, Dad drew the final picture:
___ // /\ _____| \ \ | __/ / / / / / /\_ _/<<\ \ \ \ \ \ \/ \ --------------------------- "Trashcan in dead Zebra" by Dad
It seems I managed to get the last word by saying in reply, "You're weird. (That's a compliment)"
And there the story stands, and there the zebra lies.
Thanks to Dad for digging these out for me.
