Bamboo is the plant of family Gramineae (grass family), chiefly of warm or tropical and subtropical regions, where it is sometimes an extremely important component of the vegetation. It is most abundant in the monsoon area of East Asia. Bamboo can reach 30 m high and 30 cm diameter. The culms are round (rarely square), jointed, sometimes thorny, and hollow or solid with evergreen or
deciduous leaves. Some types die after flowering and some do not flower in several decades. In many places bamboo is used as wood for construction work, furniture, utensils, fabric, paper,
fuel, and innumerable small articles. Bamboo shoots are delicious vegetable, and some grains of some species are also utilized for food. The bamboo has long been used for decorative purposes, both in gardens and in art. There are more than thousand uses of bamboo.

INBAR's CD
"Global climatic cross-mapping for bamboo species-to-site matching"
displays the potential exotic locations for each species according to the
climatic requirements of each bamboo, and also shows all species suitable for
a specific location. The CD also includes information on distribution,
climatic requirements and uses for each species. One example is at http://www.inbar.int/sitematch.htm.
Once a user
finds out what species are suitable for his site, he may ask where he can find
the species from a bamboo nursery near his site. So we would like to collect
bamboo lists from bamboo suppliers around the world. Later we will combine the
lists to our CD. Please send me your bamboo lists, location, contact
information etc before May.
Thanks for
your cooperation. Fu,
