An Introduction to plant taxonomy
![]()
Living things are classified into different categories according to how closely they are related to one another. The classification follows an orderly manner of dividing each group in a descending order. The highest level (the broadest category) in taxonomy is the Kingdom while the lowest level (the most specific category) is the Species.

All plants belongs to the Plant Kingdom (Kingdom Plantae). The Plant Kingdom is categorized into twelve Divisions (also called Phyla). Each Division is in turn divided into Subdivisions, Classes, Orders and so on, until the Species level. Within Species there can be groups of individuals that are slightly varied, and these are called Varieties.
