Japan/France 2002 Colour 113min
"...the Dolls Inspired by dolls of classical bunraku theatre, Kitano weaves an actual performance into three entwined modern day romantic tragedies that combine theatrical artifice with cinematic realism to astounding effect. Providing the main narrative thrust is the doomed love of a woman driven to distraction when jilted, and her fiance whose repentance comes too late. Tied together by a red rope, they drag themselves through four seasons across breathtaking Japanese landscapes strewn with cherry blossoms, verdant fields, fiery maples and snow-carpeted slopes. Fashion guru Yamamoto Yoji dresses the celebrity cast in a stunning palette of colours that blend into the natural scenery, evoking their presence as mere puppets on a cosmic stage..."
It's like the Japanese "Hero" when you look at the colours of the scenes. Gorgeous is the colour of trees and sakura. A simple story, can be a touching story. Kitano made an attempt this time to capture the feeling of love using a doll models. People beside are like dolls linking each to others using a rope, or can it be wireless in this era. A stare, a laugh, an expectation, waiting on the bench. This is the sense of love, a traditional one, of Kitano. To me, it is just a bit too beautiful... (6.5/10)
