BACK TO THE POLE ...

...Having good films is like enjoying a delicious meal in a nice restaurant...

02. Salome

Cast - Aida Gomez, Javier Toca, Paco Mora
Director - Carlos Saura
Spain 2002 Colour 85min

"...Salome Cinema's king of Iberian dance presents another exquisite flamenco number in the same fiery spirit of Tango, Carmen and Blood Wedding. The tale of the spurned seductress who uses her dancing skills to exact a deadly revenge is the most titillating chapter from the Bible. It lends itself brilliantly to choreographic adaptation which accentuates the sensuous aspect in the voluptuous Aida Gomez's pulse-quickening, hot-blooded hammering of heels. The climactic Dance of the Seven Veils, performed against stark but superbly-lit panels, to a thundering score fusing Spanish master Tomatitio's guitar with an original world beat, is beyond breathtaking. John the Baptist dances his head off."

A good film by Carlos Saura, and it's just like being caught by the rhythm of flamingo and tango dance. The first half of the story described the preparation of a theatre play on stage of Salome, about the use of sound and beats, the use of lighting, the steps and gesture, warm-up, costume¡Kand then a play just performed in front of you by means of a screen in the cinema. (8/10)
