BACK TO THE POLE ...

03. The Son (Le Fils)

Cast - Olivier Gourmet, Morgan Marinne, Isabella Soupart
Belgium 2002 103min

"...The Son (Le Fils) Gourmet (Best Actor, Cannes 2002) plays Olivier, a carpentry teacher whose world gets turned upside down when 16-year-old Francis (Marinne) asks to be his apprentice. Initially horrified by the boy (who we learn has spent time in prison for a violent crime), Olivier becomes obsessed by him, shadowing his every move. While adding a new chapter to the suspense genre, The Son also critiques loss and violence, redemption and forgiveness, and the ties between fathers and sons. Refusing to deal in gross catharsis, the film's pacing, understated performances and pitiless handheld camera, create a meticulously crafted work that has the unmediated feel of a single, breathtaking scene."

To be frank, this is not that good to me. You cannot deny that the film was made in a unique style. Much demonstration of the cruelness of an industrial state can be found, people are working in a cold and lonely environment. Without many words, the camera is like a powerful tool to display a state of sorrow. But, the film can be too long, and the environmental sound can be a nuisance. This is not a good experience as an audience for me, as everything seems very repetitive. (4/10)
