BACK TO THE POLE ...

...Having good films is like enjoying a delicious meal in a nice restaurant...

04. 17 Times Cecile Cassard

Director - Christophe Honore
Cast - Beatrice Dalle, Romain Duris, Jeanne Balibar
France 2002 Colour 106min

"According to Christophe Honore, there are 17 faces of a woman's grief, and Beatrice Dalle puts them on one by one in his deeply resonant debut about bereavement. She plays Cecile, a woman immobilised by the pain and void caused by her husband's death. Wishing to end a life that's become a pale shadow, she leaves her son behind and checks into a seedy hotel in Toulouse. Instead renewal comes in phases starting with ghostly visitations, sex-starved men and sympathetic gays. In this sparsely narrated slow-burner, Dalle has little dialogue to fall back on. But she is wonderfully expressive with her doleful glances, her sighs and tears, her presence defined by absence."

Very French made, but just like a toast, you eat it and you cannot feel much afterwards. The Director wants to present the faces of a woman, but sometimes it's just too calm and mild. Beatrice acts quite well, but she cannot still get a breakthorough from her every play before. (5/10)
