06. Tycoon (Un nouveau russe)

Cast - Vladimir Mashkov, Andrei Krasko, Maria Mironova
Director - Pavel Lounguine
France/Russia/Germany 2002 Colour 128min

"Trenchant, pumped and savage, Tycoon is a savvy indictment of the fast talking oligarchs who are cannibalising post-Glasnost Russia. In the tradition of Coppola's Godfather trilogy, Tycoon tells of the rise and fall of Plato Makovsi, a brilliant student who apprentices himself into the shady world of Post-Soviet business. Played with magnetic steel by Russsian superstar Mashkov, Plato represents the worst of Russia Inc. where CEOs court mafia chieftains and pay off Kremlin hacks. As in The Wedding (25th HKIFF), Tycoon searches Russia's soul by looking at the impact of social, political and economic upheaval on the lives of individuals."

Gorgeous epic from Russia. Tycoon is about the life of Plato Makovsi and the social change and development of Russia during the past decades. Precise and touching, inspiring and romantic, the story was told through the investigation of a detective and the memory of close friends of Plato Makovsi. Without much effect or big scene, the rise and fall of the millionaire was described in a lively way. Packed with elements of a dynamic society, people are finding way to survive and live. This is the film with best description of characters this year I have ever seen. (8/10)
