09.Parlez-moi d'amour
Cast - Judith Godreche, Niels Arestrup, Anne
Le Ny
Director/Script - Sophie Marceau
France 2002 Colour 98min
"When France's screen goddess Sophie Marceau stands behind the camera, a whole nation holds its breath. Her debut feature is a revelation. Though it takes its name from 1930s diva Lucienne Boyer's classic chanson d'amour, it speaks not the lyrics of love, but the prose of separation. Justine, a still youthful mother of three, ends her 15-year marriage to Richard, an older and famous writer. A thinly veiled autobiography of her life with director Andrzej Zulawski, it examines the build-up to and aftermath of divorce subtly through everyday minutiae, and elicits wonderfully nuanced performances precisely because it keeps its distance. Best Director, 2002 Montreal Film Festival."
This is the first time Sophie Marceau holds the camera to direct a film. Quite a self portrait to love, the film is about a marriage and love. From the camera lens, you can feel the ambition she is trying to achieve in the film. Classic wide to close shots, a mildly extension of her thought to love, the film would be beautiful if viewing from every single scene. But as a whole, it still needs some more effort to complete the piece. (5/10)
