11. Morning Sun

Director Carma Hinton, Richard Gordon, Geremie Barme
USA 2003 Colour & B/W 120min

"After Gate of Heavenly Peace (20th HKIFF) shook the world, Carma Hinton gives the definitive testimony of the Cultural Revolution. With co-directors Richard Gordon and Geremie Barme, they retrace those "blazing red years" that they lived through, and provide fresh perspectives on the political culture that informed violent passions of the movement. Coming forward for the first time, key figures like the wife and daughter of Liu Shaoqi add weight to the meticulously researched archival stills and footage of major events. Period media arts and paraphernalia are cited to map the psycho-emotional topography of the Mao cult. Of special interest are two previously unseen propaganda films that manifest the triumph of class consciousness over medical expertise. Stupefying agitprop of logic-defying bravado, one of them features a school of deaf-mutes cured by Mao Zedong thoughts."

This is a work for over a decade. Sometimes, you don't know what to say when you find that such a documentary film about the Chinese Cultural Revolution was actually done by a team of US people. Captured quite moments of valuable facts about the society in the 60's and the cultural policy carried out by the Chinese communists, it's a film about the past, about our country that we miss to have found out more here in Hong Kong. We don't have much sense of country and civil education about our race, about the morning sun our country should be proud of. Surprisingly I was attracted by the art form of the communist demonstrating on stage to the general people during the 60's. They praised the victory of the communist during the past time of wars, they outlined the spirit of Mao to the country. We were the morning sun, and the film did depict uniquely the impact of socially held sense of value and the threat of the cynic crowd to the society and the traditional culture in the past. Like every chapter in the history, it's also about the conflict and battles between political parties. A rise and fall of a century, it's never an end to review the past and the revolution our ancestors made in the 20 th Century, including the Cultural Revolution. A touching documentary, with ample space for us the generation to think about. (8/10)
