15. 10 Minutes Older:
The Cello
Germany/France 2002 Colour 100min
"The companion film to Ten Minutes Older: The Trumpet continues the exploration of time and its meaning in film, with a new line-up of directors that balances heavyweights (Bertolucci, Godard, Szabo, Schlondoff, Menzel) with the welcome presence of a female director (Claire Denis) and younger talents (Mike Figgis, Michael Radford). Taking in all human (and extra-terrestrial) experience, the omnibus is also a smorgasbord of genres - experimental videotage, sci-fi, documentary, biography, fable, and more. The mellow timbre of the cello replaces the jazzy notes of the trumpet as the thread that weaves the pieces together."
Histoire d'eaux (Bernardo Bertolucci)

This is a fairy tale from India. An interesting 10 minutes. It's just like the story we heard during childhood¡K10 minutes in the heaven may mean a decade on earth. (6.5/10)About Time 2 (Mike Figgis)

A good attempt to make use of the 10 minutes to demonstrate a discontinuity of time in 4 pieces. Good techniques on the separation of images in each scene and linkage among the four. A rather experimental piece among the other works. But I think the story can be enriched further. Not sure how the vision would be before one dies...will all the previous memory / snapshots appear once again sequence-less like this one? (6/10)One Moment (Jiri Menzel)

Watching this film was a bit quite nostalgic...Menzel used his 10 minutes to capture the different moments of an actor from his younghood to aged. Quite a facial expression, we can see how time can change our face gradually. The music is good, and I would just think the film should end in saying "what a life!". (7/10)Ten Minutes After (Istvan Szabo)

Comparatively this is not a good piece of work to me in the project. (4/10)Vers Nancy (Claire Denis)
![]()
A black and white recording of a dialogue between a philosopher and a student. About race, with a metaphysical interpretation. The form of the film is quite like the mood of Plato's work. The last phrase of the film was wonderful. (6.5/10)The Enlightenment (Volker Schlondoff)

When watching the work, I thought of a scientific documentary I saw in the Space Museum. Simulating the perspective of a mosquito, Schlondoff talked about life. "What is present? What is past? What is Future? Are there any present, if the present is so short that becomes a past in a sudden?" (6.5/10)Addicted to the Stars (Michael Radford)

It is delighted there is a Sci-Fi 10 minutes, and this one by Radford. Talking about time, it is not difficult to relate it to the future, the mysterious time zone that we can never know until we will be in the so called "future" in the future. A spaceman traveled to the future and met his son, who was then already became an old man. It is something to the Theory of Relativity. It may be 10 minutes to one, but to the other, it can already be years. Time would sometimes not be the key element, but the quality of time would judge the length of the time that we need to think about. (7.5/10)Dans le Noir du Temps (Jean-Luc Godard)
This is what we called Mastery. This is Godard, the master of film language. On his hand, 10 minutes becomes a montage of magnificent demonstration of time, or memory of time. Words and images, you can never imagine a film history without Godard. (9/10) **************************
