"Paul Schrader plumbs the filthy sewer of human psyche in his tarnishing bio-pic on the sex addiction and mysterious murder of 1970s sitcom star Bob Crane. Spotlighting the folie a deux between Crane (Greg Kinnear) and his bisexual video engineer (Willem Dafoe), who gave him corrupting access to porn and the latest AV gadgets, Schrader chronicles a critical era in the evolvement of American masculinity. Voyeurs needn't crane their necks for sexual hijinks which get more degenerate and desperate. Yet, the underlying theme is less about libido on the loose than ego eating the soul - Auto means "self", and Focus implies "centredness.""

A much Hollywood style, Auto Focus is like shooting a bibliography of Bob Crane. Once a famous TV star, the film focused more on his ego center and his character that brought him to an end in his life as an artist. Another sad story. (7/10)
