Creating an updated Office XP CD

(integrated Office XP SP2)

Requirements

1. Office XP
2. Relevant administrative updates. - Service Pack 2 was released on August 20, 2002. It is an all inclusive update, so Office XP is much easier to update now as only one 50MB download is required, and application of only two MSP files.
3. Latest Windows Installer. Details here.

Office XP details - What is included in the product box? Creating an Administrative Installation Point

Insert your Office XP CD and run setup.exe with the /a switch.

eg G:\setup.exe /a

You will be prompted for your CD key, user name and location to create the Administrative installation point. Use E:\OfficeXP\

Updating the Administrative Installation Point

Extract the Administrative updates to E:\update\. It is possible that newer updates may overwrite some of the older files, so extract the files in the order that they were released.

Apply the patches (sorted by date with the oldest applied first) using the following windows installer switches. Click here for an explanation of various switches and a link to MSI errors codes.

At the "Run" command type -

msiexec /p E:\update\*.MSP /a E:\OfficeXP\*.MSI shortfilenames=true /qb

where -
*.MSP is the name of the update file, eg Mainsp2ff.msp
*.MSI is the name of the relevant office msi, eg PROPLUS.MSI

Core files update -

msiexec /p E:\update\Mainsp2ff.MSP /a E:\OfficeXP\PROPLUS.MSI shortfilenames=true /qb

Web Components update -

msiexec /p E:\update\Owc10sp2ff.msp /a E:\OfficeXP\OWC10.MSI shortfilenames=true /qb

Apply any post-SP2 patches available.

If a CD key error occurs, remove the (/qb) switch and repeat.

You now have an updates administrative installation point for Office XP Service Pack 2. Transfer to a rewritable CD and update when patches are released. The CD label is trivial, so use the original Office XP CD label.

This method was required due to the size of Office XP. An Administrative Installation Point for Disc 1 of the Professional Special Edition is about 625MB. If all of the files on the CD were included (as in the Office 2000 article), the size of C:\Office\ would be in the vicinity of 900MB.

Updating the installed software with the updated Administrative Installation Point

This depends on the patches that were applied, so it is best to follow the instructions provided by Microsoft for the relevant patches applied. A complete reinstall of ALL or just the UPDATED Office Components is possible, but I will leave this to the official Microsoft documentation as it requires strings relevant to the patch applied.

Visit here for a list of features that need to be used in the Windows Installer commands to update an existing installation with the Office XP Service Pack 2 administrative install.
