Most of you who have surfed this far are familiar with the
chinless wonder to your left. Affectionately known as "Dr.
Tongue," this is the first zombie we meet in George Romero's
DAY OF THE DEAD. Since many (if not all) prints of the film are
quite dark, the visual impact of Tom's creation has been lost on
many a moviegoer and/or tape renter. Even the LD and DVD issues of
DAY... don't really do justice to the wicked beauty of Tom
Savini's work up close and in person. Every hair on this geek's head was put there,
laboriously, by hand, one at a time!
I think what I enjoy most about this wretched creature is that not only is it a fearsome-looking animated corpse, but it is a most wretched being: it cannot feed! It has no teeth, no mouth, not even a lower jaw! Its grim, gaping visage elicits not only our horror and disgust but, oddly enough, our sympathy. To me it is the most perfectly profound and hideous representation of the Romero zombie/consumer---voraciously ravenous and ironically powerless at the same time. A truly undead nightmare!
