Prions

I am currently researching prions, which are little pieces of protein which can cause a world of trouble. These have been in the news a lot lately, mostly because of the ominous MAD COWS of Britain and, to a lesser extent, because the scientist who has spent his life researching them, Stanley B. Prusiner, won the Nobel Prize for his work.

Scientists have discovered that pretty much all mammals have prions, but they are in a harmless, non-threatening form. When these proteins mutate, they can cause other proteins to mutate. This chain reaction takes a while, but with deadly results. The brain tissues develop holes in them.

Scientists are just beginning to learn how these little proteins cause such big damage. I'm following their works as close as possible. To find out more about prions, check out other places on the web, or the paper I wrote in college.
