Hugo and Daphne

Jon and Jeanne's pet cats

On May 27, 2004, we adopted two four-year-old cats. Here's the first pictures we have of them.

No doubt, we will be filling these pages with far too much detail about our pets. So far, we (all four of us) our adusting well to each other. Hugo, the intrepid one, enjoys exploring the house, and he complains loudly at any door that's closed to him or barrier set to stop him. Fortunately for Hugo, very few of these obstacles stop him for long. Daphne is a bit skittish yet quite the slut, reveling in the attention we pay to her. Daphne likes to make grooming a collaborative effort. She'll lick our hands a lot. A lot. A lot. A lot. A lot. Then wait while we use our wet "paws" to wash her face.

The cat that almost

We had planned on getting two cats. On our first visit to Kitty Cottage, a cat adoption center, we found Sweet Bella Bella.

Well actually, in true cat fashion, she found us. Barely more than one year old, she'd recently given birth to a litter of kittens and, when she found us, was recovering from her "fix" operation. About a third smaller than most of the other adult cats, she was also thin and had staples protruding from her shaved stomach. Yet she was sweet and affectionate, cuddling up to Jeanne and sitting with her on a couch until she was lifted into Jon's lap, where she continued to purr while she allowed us to pet her.

We left her there for a week to recover, then returned to select a friend to keep her company for those times we weren't home. That's when we met the real Hellcat Bella Bella. While still affectionate to people, it was clear that Bella did not want to spend time with any other cats. If any cat, no matter how much bigger, came too close to her, she'd attack. As her expression shows in this second photo, she dared any cat, "take one more step, and I'll cut you!" The adoption center finally decided that Bella would be better off in a single-cat home. Instead, they recommended we take home Hugo and Daphne, littermates who'd been together their whole lives.

And that's what we did.
