engine dismantling
I took pictures of what I could (ended up being not detailed enough) so that re-assembly would be easier. One thing about this car is that the power plant really is stuffed into the car, so doing things like removing the exhaust manifold takes about 10 times longer than it would on, say, any other car. The workshop filled up with car parts pretty quickly. I was amazed that so many objects could all fit into the engine compartment. You can see from the pictures that the engine block itself is actually pretty compact, and in the bottom photo, the heads, upper and lower pan, and front cover are all removed, I'm installing new timing chain tensioners there. The block is cast iron, and nearly everything around it is aluminum: heads, pans, covers, etc. The electrolytic action between the two metals is what causes the heads to become so corroded, especially if the car sits with a charged battery over time. There was quite a bit of welding to be done on this engine's heads, in addition to the other valve work. None of the valves were actually replaced, which surprised me, but I was assured that they were fine.
