What a difference a month can make

Lassen Volcanic National Park on Sunday, May 31, 1998. The "crooked" tree on the Lily Pad Trail encircling Reflection Lake.

It seems that this crooked, little tree has not grown much over the years.

Mt. Lassen as seen from Reflection Lake.

Despite continuing snow storms Reflection Lake has thawed in the last month.

End of plowed road at the Devastated Area. Taken Sunday, May 31, 1998

The road through the park remains closed with over 19 feet of snow at the south entrance.

Sunlit, still corner of Reflection Lake

Populated by pairs of Mallard ducks, birds and ground squirrels.

Backlit thunderhead building. Seen from Loomis Museum parking lot.

Afternoon thunderstorms are not uncommon at this altitude. Resulting rainstorm was intense, but brief.

Much had changed in Lassen Volcanic National Park in just one month. Much of the snowpack had melted away. Manzanita Lake and Reflection Lake were both thawed. The park was a peaceful place. Stellar jays were jumping from branch to branch. Fat robins bounced along the trails and small ground creatures scurried about. The only sounds were the birds, the wind in the pines and the running streams. From the northern entrance of the park, the road was cleared for just 10 miles to the parking lot at the Devastated Area. From the southern entrance plowing was going slow as well, and the snowpack covering the road was still nearly twenty feet.
