live with no regrets
made in china?
Life came in very definite stages for me. Geographically, I have moved along the same longitude between both hemispheres and am currently quite settled in Beijing (for how long, one never knows). Moving to Hong Kong seemed quite natural to me because I spent a lot of my growing years vacationing there. In fact, my second brother Charles, was born en route from Hong Kong back to Singapore.
I went to Hong Kong upon completing my Honors project and Cognitive Science studies to take a breather - silently hoping for opportunities within the Media industry. A good friend of mine, YingChi, was researching into her Phd thesis on the History of Hong Kong Cinema, (incidentally, my pet topic). so I had much fun doing some interviews with her, and to hopefully meet intgeresting people along the way, which I did. One person that impressed my was Law Kar, a Film Studies lecturer at Baptist College and TVB consultant. Mr. Law's threoretical readings of films such as "Swordsman 2" by Tsui Hark are very perceptive indeed.
Encouraged to try my luck in Hong Kong by my friends and family, I was fortunate enough to get numerous job offers within the Film and Television industry, but one offer fascinated me, which I stayed on until now. I was given the opportunity to develop the Soccer League in China with Leo Burnett, in partnership with Philip Morris and International Management Group. It is an opportunity that I cherish and am eternally grateful to Andrew Christy, Catherine Guthrie and Benjamin Tsang for the opportunity.
If you think running a Soccer League is easy, try doing that in China. Working in China is just like trying to unify Europe. Each province and city has its own ideosyncracies and to be THAT sensitive in 12 different cities for the socer league was no easy task, especially when the local teams (then) had no concept of marketing and management. The experience certainly made a man out of me...in more ways that you would care to think about:)
Through China, I have come to meet many heroes such as Eddy Irvine, Gerhard Berger, Eric Tsang,, Michael Schumacher, Eric Moo, Mao Ning, Fan Zhiyi. I also saw the tremendous teamwork that supported them and those that lasted truly had their feet planted firmly on the ground.
1994 to 1997 came and went in a flash. I met many people and did many things, but nothing mattered more to me than the numderous friends I met through the years, people who have supported me unconditionally through good times and the bad. Come to think of it, it is indeed strange to think that I had to prove myself in China professionally, but my colleagues have come to mean more to me now.
My new life in China emancipated me by giving me the opportunity to experience many different cultures e.g. Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, Swiss, Dutch etc, but also solidified my interest in music and the performing arts. I made a point to see as many performances as possible,
1998 started out in Tokyo with Mom who had not visited Japan since 1969.
