Focus on West as division play resumes
Thanks to Hurricane Andrew forcing the NFL to alter its schedule, four division
games are scheduled at the end of the regular season (League rules specify that a
full schedule must be played for division games). This means there will be a furious
fight down the stretch among the four teams in the West division for three
playoff spots. Steve Czupryna (9-1) is virually assured of making the playoffs.
Bob Wallace, (7-2-1), can either steal the division from Czupryna or be a wild
card. Tom Best and Calvin Jackson (both 6-4) fight it out for the remaining spot. In
the other divisions, the winners are nearly decided. In the East, Mike Talbot has
a game and a half lead on Jones/Klingman, but Jones/Klingman control their own
destiny. If they win the four games, they take the division because two of those
games are against Talbot. The Jones-Talbot loser has a shot at the wild card if
Best and Jackson both falter. Stroupe can win the division if he sweeps and
both Jones and Talbot go 1-3. In the Central, any victory by Brian Ricker, or
any loss by Dick Peil wraps up the division for Ricker. Peil gets two shots at
Ricker beginning this week.
EGame of the week:F
The two top teams in the league met in the final week of non-divisional play.
The result was Czupryna whipping Ricker 41-22. Ricker was a virtual one-man
team as Emmitt Smith scored 18 points. Czupryna received balanced scoring and
proved his knack of selecting the right player at the right time: The Minnesota
defense scored 12 points. This victory gives Czupryna the best record in the
league at 9-1 and also ups his two year total to 23-3. Ricker failed to clich
the division with Peil and Berger Browell playing to a tie. It was the third
tie in the league this year and a rarity: it did not involve Tim Stroupe.
EJackson and Best LeapfrogF
Two wildcard contenders, Tom Best and Calvin Jackson keep edging one another out
of the second wildcard slot. Both are 6-4, but Jackson has a head to head edge.
They'll play again week 12. Jackson humiliated Stroupe 40-8, while Best was
crushed by Talbot, 56-22. Interesting, while Best has scored over 50 points
three times, he has also had 50 scored against him three times.
EWallace saved by trade againF
Dave Bratcher is claiming credit for Bob Wallace not losing again. The
Bratcher pickups, Herschel Walker and Rodney Hampton scored 12 points each and
Wallace won by 22, 41-19, over roommate Alan Outlaw.
