Talbot wins East; Best & Wallace to meet in Wildcard
EGames of the week:F
After laying low for three weeks in divisional play, Mike Talbot rose up and
crushed Jones-Klingman 59-14 to win the East division title. It was the second
week in a row Jones lost to an opponent in the 50's and the second week in a
row the game was decided quickly. Talbot had 23 points in Thursday's Atlanta/
New Orleans game. When he faces Brian Ricker in week 16, it will be Talbot's
first playoff appearance.
Two teams faced must win games in the West and both won, however only one team
was able to make the playoffs. Calvin Jackson, alive through tie-breakers went
shopping for a quick fix and got it: Amp Lee, Pete Metzelaars and the Cleveland
D/st all scored as Jackson defeated Steve Czupryna for the second time this season,
47-30. Ultimately, however, it was Czupryna who ended up smiling and Jackson who
was depressed...
The other game in the West was one of the year's most thrilling. Both Best and
Wallace benched their starting quarterbacks and battled with backups. Wallace
went with San Diego over unproductive Minnesota and Best decided that it might
be difficult for Atlanta on the road in New Orleans and that Green Bay at home
against Detroit might be a better call (if it didn't snow). Because of the
Thursday lineup deadline, decisions had to be made sooner: Best consulted the
Weather channel and PRODIGY and Wallace consulted the "Football gods". The right
decisions were made: Green Bay threw 3 TDs to Atlanta's one and Best won by 11,
44-33. However, on Sunday afternoon it was much closer than that. Wallace's
players were stopped on the goal line 7 times. The result might have added
5 touchdowns. On the other hand, the official scorer went back and credited the
Green Bay QBs with a TD when Sterling Sharpe (Best's reciever) couldn't find the
endzone in the snow and fumbled one the 1 and picked it up and took it in. It
had been originally credited as a Sharpe 1 yard fumble recovery for TD, that
would have cost Best 7 points. If Webster Slaughter's Monday night TD catch had
occurred, the snowblind play by Sharpe would have been it would have been one of
the most imfamous plays in league history. As Wallace discovered, the "football
gods" were slightly off their 42-34 prediction but they were on Best's side.
