1992 Week 17 Results
THIS WEEK IN THE BRFL Final Edition
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ECzupryna Denied a RepeatF
Its Ricker in a Rout! 41-3
Brian Ricker might complain that he had it too easy this year. He wasn't
challenged in his division, (his nearest competitor was 5-9 Outlaw) and he
had an easy playoff win over Talbot. Steve Czupryna on the other hand,
had it a lot tougher. He came from an awesome divsion where the LAST place guy
8-6 (Calvin Jackson - who beat Czupryna twice!) and he had to score over 50 points
to survive his playoff game over Best. Conventional wisdom tells us that
the stronger, more battle tested Czupryna should roll to his second consecutive
BRFL Super Bowl win.
If that is what you think, wake up, this the BRFL - Fantasy Football. Emmitt
Smith and Thurman Thomas were not playing their final week of the season knowing
that a couple IBM'ers in North Carolina could pocket a little extra Christmas
cash based on how they did. Being battle tested and having playoff experience
means very little in the BRFL. What does matter is what guys in the final week
of the NFL season have something to play for whether it be playoff slots, home
field advantage, individual statistics or pride.
But indulging the fantasy...Steve Czupyrna had a league record two year run of
of 25-7. He was the first champion to ever make the playoffs the following year.
That was the good news, the bad news was that Brian Ricker wom the most lopsided
Super Bowl in BRFL history and Steve Czupryna set a 1992 season low for points
with 3. Ricker's guys were hungrier in week 17 and as usual, he never broke a sweat.
Playoff Recap
ECzupryna 57 Best 49F
Two pair beat one pair in a high stakes shootout on a Monday night that decided
a Super Bowl berth and who was REALLY champion in the Wild Wild West. It was
Steve Czupryna's Dallas duo of Jay Novachek and Alvin Harper who defeated
Tom Best's Atlanta Andre Rison combo. 57 and 49 were the second and third highest
playoff scores in league history. In league history (587 games to date) a
score of 49 or higher has only resulted in a losing score one other time
(Witkin 57, Shelley 51 1989.) and tie once (Jackson 52 Stroupe 52 1990).
ERicker 33 Talbot 10F
Is this a familiar scenario: a guy scores 50 something one week and then
faces Ricker in the playoffs only gets production from his kicker. It happened
here too. BRFL MVP Emmitt Smith sealed it with 13 points on Monday night.
EBest 59 Wallace 21F
Three times in five weeks Tom Best defeated Bob Wallace. 53-9, 44-33 and the
59-21 Wildcard win. 59 points is a league playoff record. Atlanta's Wade
Wilson threw five touchdowns to lead the way.
