Plenty of Scoring in Week 1
Preseason concerns about BRFL expansion diluting scoring were set aside as the
league enjoyed its most prolific opening weekend ever. Perhaps for the first
time, seven teams scored more than 40 points. The league average was nearly 35
points. It was 31 last year, 24 in 1991 and 33 in 1990 on opening weekends.
It is likely that the many double off weeks will probably have an effect on
scoring as teams later this season. Teams will need to reach deep into their
rosters for players to fill the many lineup gaps. Here is wehre the effect of
the expansion may be felt.
Recap: Talbot and Peil, two teams that were not present at the draft played each
other with Talbot winning in a shootout 44-41. John Carney, Talbots Kicker,
provided 20 points, the most by a kicker in the BRFL since 1989. Two teams that
were at the draft, but were new to the league squared off with Montgomery
defeating Gates 40-27 in the "Expansion Bowl". Berger/Browell searched the paper
looking for any activity by Cleveland receiver Michael Jackson, their 6th round
pick. The reason that they did not find any was that he changed his name to
Michael Dyson. He scored a touchdown in BB's 47-32 romp over Ricker. Calvin,
who still is Jackson, finally got a Redskin player to perform for him as Brian
Mitchell scored 13. Emmitt-less Stroupe was the victim 42-15. Jones/Klingman
was also a beneficiary of the Washington romp as the QBs tossed 3 TDs and
Wallace went down 32-24. Had Czupryna started Edgar Bennett, he could have
broke 60 as he did last year on opening weekend, but he still had enough
to crush Bratcher 49-26. Best remained undefeated lifetime against Outlaw
doubling him 42-21.
