RICE HELPS BEST IN HISTORIC ROUT, 77-8
Jerry Rice scored 26 points leading BEST to a 77-8 rout of BERGER/BROWELL. The
score is the largest margin of victory in league history. It eclipsed a 75-16
thrashing in 1990, in which BEST was the victim and Rice scored a league record
32 for BRATCHER. The 77 point total was the highest this season, but three points
short of the all time record set in 1991 by OUTLAW and JACKSON in successive weeks
over WALLACE. Best had the tools on his bench to set the record as had he started
either Derek Russell (6) or Chris Burkett (12).
The other beneficiary of Rice's big day was JACKSON's San Francisco QBs, leading
the way in 35-20 beating of hapless JONES/KLINGMAN, losers of 7 straight. JACKSON
has now found his way into second place. Also, finding his way into the money is
GATES with a 29-20 win over CZUPRYNA. CZ is usually the Monday night guy, but it
was Gate's Pittsburgh contingent scoring 23 points. MONTGOMERY falls to third,
losing to PEIL 27-23. It was another gift for Peil - the second straight week, a
high scoring opponent stocked the splinter squad.
STROUPE broke a three year string of ties with WALLACE by defeating him 48-22.
It puts him in a dead-heat with PEIL. They tied eariler in the season and now
they each have 326 points. The next tie breaker is record against higher ranked
teams: Peil is 3-2 and Stroupe is 2-3. RICKER defeated BRATCHER, 27-26, dealing
Bratcher his second consecutive one point defeat and second straight defeat
where a 50 plus touchdown bonus point has made a difference. Bratcher has always
been a critic of this play. It won't help his mood to note that WILLIE DAVIS
was the one who scored it.
Finally, TALBOT's win over OUTLAW, 32-12 has clinched him a BYE in week 14.
A victory or a JACKSON loss in the next two weeks clinches first place. JACKSON
is the only other team alive for first. MONTGOMERY, GATES, CZUPRYNA and BEST
are still alive for second only.
The standings below have all playoff tie breakers applied.
