1993 Week 13 Results
Week 14 * This Week in the BRFL * Dec 3, 1993
HOT 49'ERS LIFT JACKSON TO FIRST PLACE
For the third consecutive week, Steve Young accounted for four touchdowns and
Calvin JACKSON reaped the benefits. This week it was a pretty straight forward
42-14 win over CZUPRYNA. Last week it was a dramatic 5 TD comeback win over Peil,
48-44 - one of the best BRFL games ever played. Jackson needed help to get to the
top, and the 49'ers contributed to that as well. Led by Jerry Rice, BEST disposed
of former leader TALBOT, 42-26. Rice has scored 8 touchdowns in three weeks and
leads all players (backs and receivers) with 88 points.
THE BUTTS FACTOR: Playoff pairings appeared to be set and then Marion Butts scored
in the fourth quarter Monday night and lifted GATES past WALLACE, 21-16. The Gates win
earned a rematch with Wallace this week. It is the second year in a row that Wallace
opens the playoffs with the team he played last in the regular season. Also
slated to meet in back to back weeks are STROUPE and BRATCHER. In one of their
typical low scoring affairs, Bratcher nipped Stroupe 12-8. MONTGOMERY beat BERGER/BROWELL,
24-8, but lost the regular season league scoring title to Best, 429-415. Total
season points figured in Peil landing 7th place over Stroupe since they tied with
6-6-1 records and tied each other in the regular season. Peil outscored Stroupe
399-350. Incidentally, two weeks ago they each had 326. Peil beat Outlaw 29-18.
JONES/KLINGMAN lost their 9th straight. This time to RICKER, 19-11. J/K scored
the fewest points in the league AND gave up the most. Typical of a real life
bad teams, but considering the fact that you really can't play defense in this
league, it is purely coincidental.

WEEK 14 - PLAYOFF PREVIEW
"Its the only week that matters."
In this year's tournament format all 14 teams will participate in the playoffs.
The top two teams will sit out this week and join the six winners in week 15. The
teams will be re-seeded and placed into brackets for the last two weeks.
Bye teams: 1. JACKSON 9-3-1 and 2.TALBOT 9-4.
Poetic Justice... The two teams that had victories taken away from them because of ineligible players are
the leagues two top seeds. They get a bye this week. Not that they wouldn't mind being in the fray this week
as their QBS have favorable matchups. Often times in the past, Jackson is on the outside looking in, kicking himself
over some stupid trade or some miracle defeat. Not this year. From Draft Day, to the fleecing of Jones, to the
Novachek/Delpino swap Jackson has made the right move at the right time. His end of the season line up is
putting points on the board at 42 a game clip. He wins on Monday night and starts the right guys at the right time.
TALBOT on the other hand is in a slump at the end of the season. The most telling stat is that since week 8,
he has had only one TD from a player. However, he defeated Montgomery and Gates in that stretch
and that has preserved his bye.
3. MONTGOMERY 9-4 vs 14. JONES/KLINGMAN 3-10
Previous result: MONTY 54 J/K 5 - Week 8
League Beamouth, Montgomery takes on lowly Jones/Klingman. Losers of 9 straight. It could be week 8 all over again.
It looks like J/K has no chance unless it can swing deals for the SF Qbs and Jerry Rice. All Montgomery has
to do is out score their kicker and he moves on. However, if there is slight concern for Monty, it his 19 ppg
output over the last four weeks. QB turmoil with the Rams and Philly, caught up to him about midseason.
Frustrated in trade talks, he finally got Phoenix from Jackson, but it cost him steady Quinn Early. For the miracle
to occur, J/K needs a big game from Boomer or could try and load up in the Skins in Tampa. Ron Moore could
blunt MONTYS QB. Maybe Touchdown Tommy can live up to his hype. Don't count on it. Monty will romp.
4. GATES 9-4 vs 13. WALLACE 4-9
Previous result: Gates 21 Wallace 16 - week 13
All season long, Wallace has been waiting for week 14. His wait might be rewarded. Dallas is mad and ready to
vent a little anger at home against hated rival Philly on Monday night. Aikman can prove his QB worth. Irvin will
oblige. Gates got by this year on luck and guile. After an inauspicious 0-3 start that included a shutout. He used his
low standing to pluck substitutes for injured superstars and went 9-1 the rest of the way. Now, the stars are
back and it may take more than Marion Butts to pull this one out. He needs to grab some of Wallace's Dallas action,
or he'll make an early exit.
5. CZUPRYNA 8-5 vs 12. OUTLAW 4-9
Previous Result: Czupryna 26 Outlaw 23 - week 5
Czupryna used his usual mixture of luck and timing to reached the upper echelon of the league again. Every year, he
is dismissed on draft night, but come December, he has a formidable collection. There is some cause for worry:
Miami keeps turning over their QBs and production may diminish. He has gotten all league production how of his kicker and
defense. He has several players capable of multiple touchdown games: He's the king of the tight ends. Outlaw, on the
other hand, drafts well and disappears. He has a strong kicker also and an emerging QB in San Diego. They have
a favorable match up and he could pull an upset if the Giants hold Miami to a low scoring game.
6. BEST 7-6 vs 11. RICKER 5-8
Previous Result: Best 26 Ricker 15 - week 5
Best continued his pattern of running up outrageous scores one week and teens the next. It earned him a scoring
title two straight years. Ricker on the other hand, made some noise early in the season, but quieted down. He may have found
rhythm with Elway and Watters. Best counters with a strong trio of receivers in Rice, Jeffires and Carter. Key might be
Derek Russell, his fourth man, to counter Elway. His QBs have not been productive of late and both face tough road tests.
The real game within a game could be Rice/Watters showdown in the San Francisco / Cincinnati game. Rice is seeking a TD
record, but Watters may flourish since the Bengals are horrid against the run.
7 PEIL 6-6-1 vs 10. BERGER/BROWELL 5-8
Previous result: Berger/Browell 39 Peil 24 - week 6
To pull an upset, B/B has to hope that Kelly ignores Andre Reed and that Houston stifles Atlanta in Jerry
Glanville's homecoming. He has steadily rebuilt his injury decimated backfield by acquiring R Smith and Worley; both due for
breakout games. As a plus, Reggie Cobb returns to the lineup against the lowly Skins. Peil probably has little to
worry about if Atlanta puts up big numbers in Houston. B/B probably lacks the firepower to engage in a shootout.
Peil has had historic bad luck in those.
8. STROUPE 6-6-1 vs 9 BRATCHER 5-7-1
Previous Result: Bratcher 12 Stroupe 8 - week 13
Stroupe looked like a world beater in midseason as he blitzed scoring machines Montgomery and Best. Then injuries struck
both his two first round superstars, Smith and Foster. They are both back this week. Bratcher however, lost his first round
pick, Barry Sanders, to injuries. Yet, it could be a blessing in disguise. Barry's breakout game never came this year.
His 3 TDs were quickly matched by a smart pick-up, Gary Brown, in three games. Key may be the QB position. Both of these
teams are famous for shunning the notion of a stud QB, but the QB that actually does score might win this game, otherwise
give it to the team who's backs get the most bonus points.
