Week 15 THIS WEEK IN THE BRFL December 15, 1994
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
TOP TWO SEEDS AND A COUPLE OF CINDERELLAS ADVANCE TO FINAL FOUR
Top Seeds BERGER/BROWELL and BEST fought back their upstart challengers, and
STROUPE and TALBOT won handily to move into the money round, also known as
week 16. 13th seeded MONTGOMERY and 12th seeded WALLACE could have both pulled
off upsets if they had not done so much tinkering. MONTGOMERY had 31 points left
on his bench and WALLACE made a last minute kicker switch that proved fatal.
B/B 48 MONTY 25: Some of B/B's lesser lights starred this week, and they had
the foresight to start them. To counteract Monty's New England QBs, MARION
BUTTS and LEROY THOMPSON got the call, and produced 18 points. This helped
bolster scoring despite a "subpar" two TD day from Steve Young.
BEST 45 WALLACE 44: This game will never be remembered as a great shootout, but
rather for a fatal mistake when WALLACE pulled his regular kicker, JASON ELAM
in favor of AL DEL GRECO. Elam had 7, and Del Greco did not score. The game
was nip and tuck all afternoon. WALLACE would open up a lead with a Favre/Sharpe
combo and Best would chip away with 3 pts or 6 pts at a time. BEST took the lead
in the second half of the 4:00 Charger/49'er game when both Watters and Means
scored. Moore scored for Wallace to close the gap to 1. But it stayed at 1 when
Houston, down 16, went for two point conversions instead of PATs leaving
Del Greco scoreless.
TALBOT 56 OUTLAW 28: Although Talbot is seeded 11th, no one was surprised when
he manhandled 3rd seeded OUTLAW. Besides the continued high calibar of play
by the Marino/Jackson combo, other players have been stepping each week. This
time it was John L Williams, Terry Allen and Houston D/ST with a punt return.
STROUPE 33 JACKSON 17: The real cinderella in this final 4 is 8th seeded Stroupe.
And he has Jackson to thank. The Atlanta/Minnesota QB trade finally caught up to
Calvin. However, without the trade, this would have been DEITRICH's victory,
since the Atlanta QBs wouldn't have put Calvin past Bud in week 14. Meanwhile,
Stroupe is living a charmed life. He has been outscored by six of the ten
playoff losers so far and has drawn opponents both times that have scored in
the teens.
Berger/Browell vs Stroupe: (week 8: B/B 43 STROUPE 19)
B/B has to be considered about SF QB complacentcy now that division is clinched
and home field is almost sown up. They face a weak Denver D on Saturday. Stroupe
hopes for a Atlanta-Green Bay shootout where weather may factor in and the
Mathis is not the target. Calvin's prediction: B/B 47 Stroupe 21
Best vs Talbot: (week 7: BEST 52 TALBOT 35)
Buffalo had a tendancy to bounce back from a loss with a monster game from Kelly
and Reed, but can Reich step in? Miami plays Indianapolis on the road where
scores can be low. Calvin's prediction: Talbot 39 Best 37
